1. Visit me early with morning wine, before dawn,

And race in the arena of youth and merriment.

  2. And make the most of love's visitor, for he has brought

glad tidings of rain from the breeze of the winds.

  3. Pass it to me, like pomegranate blossom, when

it is crowned with daisies formed from its bubbles,

  4. Sharing the apple's distinctive fragrance and ruddy

hue, but not the apple's density.

  5. It is no wonder that the radiance of the

sun is drawn from it by the stars of the goblets.

  6. For it is the source of light in its subtlety, just as its

cups are the substance of pure, clear water.

  7. Bodies served it by nature, when

they saw its nearness to spirits.

  8. So revive with it the last spark of my

joys, and with it stir the stillness of my delight,

  9. Between two roses, of fingertips and cheek,

And two draughts, of saliva and wine,

  10. And a chant drawn from conversation,

And singing that leaves no need for goblets.

  11. For the sweetest life is that in which the wise

man mingles his vice with virtue.
