1. Say to the sound-judging, hoped-for lord of the court—

    the renowned speaker and man of action—

  2. the man whose gifts’ dew has come

    to shame the driving torrent of pelting rain;

  3. the man who shows us, whenever we visit him,

    what the noble benefactor’s conduct is like:

  4. May he ransom you from death’s sudden turns—

    the man whose face is a lock upon the petitioner’s mouth—

  5. while from the splendor of your brow you unveil

    a radiant light that revives the hopeful one’s hope.

  6. Blessed are you, a pouring rain of generosity;

    you have become the ornament of an unadorned age:

  7. an ocean, yet one brimming with largesse;

    a full moon, yet one complete in wisdom.

  8. He wards off Time’s injustice from his people;

    thus he is the namesake of the Just King.

  9. His bounty has no fault but this:

    once bestowed, it keeps me from praising it.

  10. O you, from whom we receive all

    we desire, despite the withholding miser—

  11. from your face comes a sun, and from your eminence

    a shade—but one that never passes away.

  12. Your bounty has lightened my troubled mind,

    but it has indeed weighed heavily upon my shoulders.

  13. May you ever remain among us a Kaaba of generosity,

    while we extol your all-embracing beneficence.

  14. And may you ever stride forth from my thoughts

    in a mantle of praise, ample and trailing;

  15. through your virtues it carries a fragrance

    that perfumes listener and speaker alike.

  16. I have as much gratitude as you wish, since

    you have as much bounty as I wish.
