1. هو الغرامُ أقامَ الحيُّ أم ظَعَنوا

    إن هاجَروا قَتلوا أو واصلوا فَتَنوا

    Is it love that settled the living, or did they complain

    Whether they emigrated, they were killed, or tried, they were tempted

  2. تاللهِ ما سكنَتْ نَفْسي إلى أحدٍ

    مذْ سار في الجيرةِ الغادينَ لي سَكَن

    By Allah, my soul has not settled for anyone

    Since the departing neighbor left, my peace left

  3. مَن ناشِدٌ لي مهاً سارتْ بها قُلُصٌ

    حُماتُها أُسُدٌ تَجْري بها حُصُن

    Who can guide me to a loved one taken by fate

    Her protectors are lions, she walks with fortresses

  4. ساروا يَؤُمّونَ مِن أرضِ الحمى بلَداً

    بالظُّعْنِ تُحدَى إذا مرَّتْ بهِ الظُّعُن

    They travelled intending from the protected land a country

    With sadness challenged when passed by sorrows

  5. ورُبّما تَركوا البيداءَ بحرَ دمٍ

    كأنّما العِيسُ في تَيّارِه سُفُن

    And sometimes they left the desert a sea of blood

    As if the wood in its current are ships

  6. من كلِّ طائرةٍ بالرَّحْلِ أربَعُها

    كأنّما هي في جَوْز الفلا فَدَن

    Of every bird-like carriage, four of them

    As if they are in the forest of aloes, close

  7. هِيمٌ أطالَ صداها أنّ مُورِدَها

    لا يَستقي الماءَ إلاّ والقنا شُطُن

    Yearnings whose echo lasts that its watering place

    Does not draw water except when the channels pour

  8. ضوامرٌ تَمْلأُ الأنساعَ إن ظَفِرَتْ

    فلا تَجولُ على أثباجِها الوُضُن

    Precious items that fill the palm of the hand when obtained

    So they do not wander above their wrapping

  9. تَشتاقُ نَجْداً كما أشتاقُ ساكنَهُ

    وهل لحيٍّ فؤادٌ مالَهُ شَجَن

    Yearning for Nejd as I yearn for its dweller

    Does any living heart not have agony

  10. وفوقَها كُلُّ مَمْطولٍ صَبابَتُهُ

    مُتَيَّمٍ وَجْدُهُ باقٍ ومُكْتَمِن

    And above it every fully loaded aroma

    Its love present, suppressed and hidden

  11. تَبْكي وتَطْرَبُ من رَجْعِ الحُداةِ كما

    يَهتزُّ من دَوحةٍ مَمْطورةٍ فَنَن

    You cry and marvel at the return of friends as

    A watered branch sways from a wet branch

  12. قُلْ للَّتي سفَرتْ يومَ النَّوى فبدا

    للصّبِّ مُبْتسِمٌ منها ومُحْتَضَن

    Tell her who traveled the day of departure, so

    For the youth a smiler from her nestled

  13. فما رأتْ عَينُ خَلْقٍ قبلَ رُؤْيتِها

    أقاحياً وشقيقاً ضَمَّها غُصُن

    No human eye has seen before seeing her

    Field maple and lavender embraced by a branch

  14. يا مُنيةَ النّفْسِ لِمْ أصبَحْتِ قاطعةً

    صِلى مَشوقَكِ حَيّا عهدَكِ المُزُن

    Oh death of the soul, why did you become one who severs

    Greet your yearning one while the grieving period is new

  15. ومَن سَباهُ جَمالٌ منكُمُ عَرَضاً

    فإنّه بجَميلٍ منكُمُ قَمِن

    And whoever you called beauty temporarily

    He is definitely beautiful from you hidden

  16. ما زلتُ أُسرِحُ طَرْفي في الورَى عجَباً

    فلا أرَى الحُسنَ بالإحسانِ يَقْترن

    I kept looking around in wonder

    I do not see beauty associated with beneficence

  17. حتّى تَجلَّى ظهيرُ الدّينِ لي فرأَيْ

    تُ اسْماً ووجهاً وفِعلاً كلُّه حَسَن

    Until the support of the religion appeared to me, so I saw

    A name, face and deeds all good

  18. فقُلتُ والحقُّ بادٍ لا خفاءَ له

    سُبحانَ مُنشئِ غَيْثٍ صَوبُه هَتِن

    So I said, and the truth is clear, no hiding it

    Glory to the sender of heavy rain aiming arrows

  19. فَرْدٌ يَنوءُ بما تَعْيا الألوفُ به

    وللرّجالِ مَقاديرٌ إذا وُزِنوا

    Outstanding in what the thousands fail in

    And for men there are measures, when weighed

  20. لا خَلْقَ في كَرم الأخلاقِ يُشْبهُهُ

    هذا الورى فتأمَّلْهمْ وذا الزَّمَن

    No character resembles him in the generosity of morals

    The people of this world, so consider them and this time

  21. إنّ الخليفةَ للقُصّادِ إن وفَدوا

    بيتُ النَّدى وابْنُ عبد الواحدِ الرُّكُن

    The caliph to the judges, if they came

    The house of dew and the son of Abdul Wadud, a pillar

  22. خِرْقٌ على أنّ بذْلَ المالِ عادَتُه

    مالُ الإمامِ لدَيْه الدَّهْرَ مُخْتَزَن

    A patch knowing that spending money is his habit

    The Imam’s money is stored with him forever

  23. مالانِ أمّا على هذا فمُتَّهَمٌ

    جُوداً وأمّا على هذا فمُؤْتَمَن

    Two money situations, one he is accused

    Of generosity and one he is entrusted

  24. لو لم يكُنْ خيرَ ما أولَى الملوكُ فتىً

    من الورى حِفْظَ ما حازوا وما خَزَنوا

    If it were not for the best of what kings did for the young

    To preserve what they gained and stored

  25. ما قالَ يوسفُ اجْعَلْني لدَيكَ على

    خزائنِ الأرضِ وانظُرْ كيف تَمْتحِن

    Yusuf would not say: make me over

    The treasures of the earth and see how you test

  26. يا سَيِّداً فَطِناً يَحْمي العُلا وأَبَى

    أَنْ يُدرِكَ المجدَ إلاّ سَيِّدٌ فَطِن

    Oh wise master who protects glory and refused

    To attain glory but by a wise master

  27. ومَن علَتْ رُتَبٌ في الدَّوْلَتَيْنِ له

    فوق السُّها والعدوُّ النِّكْسُ مُضْطَغِن

    And whoever’s rank is high in both states

    Above pleasure and the enemy disappointed

  28. بكتْ لها إذ رأَنْك الحاسدون بها

    كأنّهمْ بك في أَحداقِهمْ طُعنوا

    It cried when the envious saw you in it

    As if you cried in their eyelids, they were stabbed

  29. إذا بدوْتَ لهمْ أَغضَوْا على حَنَقٍ

    كأنّما الذُّلُّ في أَجفانهمْ وَسَن

    If you appear to them, they frown sullenly

    As if humiliation is on their eyelids and teeth

  30. يَفْديك قومٌ إذا زَلَّتْ لهمْ نِعَمٌ

    أَبدَوْا بها مِنَناً تَغْنَى بها المِنَن

    A people who when blessings slip them

    Show ingratitude which makes favors loss

  31. يا مُنْقِذَ الدَّولةِ اسمعْ قولَ ذي مِقَةٍ

    صفَتْ فلا رِيَبٌ فيها ولا ظِنَن

    Oh savior of the state, listen to one of prestige

    Its traits unmatched, no doubt or uncertainty

  32. قد كان جاهُك لي ذُخراً أُرفِّهُه

    وقد قَصدْتُك لمّا ضاقَ بي العَطَن

    Your glory has been for me a treasure to squander

    And I headed to you when lack narrows

  33. ولا يَمُدُّ الفتَى كلتا يدَيْهِ إلى

    أَغْلَى الذَّخائرِ إلاّ وهْو مُمْتَحَن

    A young man only reaches for the most precious treasures

    While he is tested

  34. فاعطِفْ عليَّ رعاكَ اللهُ من مَلِكٍ

    بنَظْرةٍ منكَ أَمري اليومَ مُرْتَهَن

    So turn to me, may God shepherd you, with a look

    From you, my matter today is mortgaged

  35. والْبَسْ بُرودَ ثناءٍ حاكَها صَنَعٌ

    من خَزِّ فكْريَ ما في نَسْجِها وَهَن

    And wear the mail of praise woven

    From the silk of my thoughts, no weakness in its fabric

  36. نَزِّهْ عطايا أَميرِ المؤمنينَ لنا

    عن أَنْ يُعارِضَها التّنْغيصُ والمِنَن

    Elevate the gifts of the Commander of the Faithful for us

    Above detraction and obligation

  37. ولن تُطيقَ اللَّيالي أَن تُكدِّرَها

    ولن تَراها المعالي حيثُ تُمْتَهَن

    The nights will not bear to cloud it

    Nor will high positions see it degraded

  38. فللخلافةِ أنت اليومَ خالصةٌ

    ما إنْ لها دُونَه سِرٌّ ولا عَلَن

    For the caliphate you are the essence today

    Nothing to it is secret or public but you

  39. ما الدّولةُ اليومَ إلاّ شَخْصُ مكْرمةٍ

    فيما نَراها وأنت العَينُ والأُذُن

    What is the state today but the person of prestige

    In what we see it, and you are its eyes and ears

  40. فدُمْ كذاكَ فأنت المُستَجارُ به

    إذا بدا للَّيالي جانِبٌ خَشِن

    So remain a refuge sought when

    Hard nights show a rough side

  41. إنّي لآمُلُ أنْ تُعنَى بها كرَماً

    كما الملوكُ قديماً بالعفاةِ عُنوا

    I hope you take care of it generously

    As kings of old cared for the weak

  42. وأنْ تَحُلَّ عِقالَ الدّهرِ عن أَمَلي

    فيَدْنو النّازحانِ الأهلُ والوَطَن

    And that the shackles of fate release my hopes

    So the displaced family and homeland come near

  43. طلعتَ طلعةَ سَعْدٍ للأنامِ وقد

    خافوا الزّمانَ فلّما جئْتَهمْ أَمِنوا

    You rose like Saad’s luck for the people and they

    Feared the days, but when you came, they felt safe

  44. فالحمدُ للهِ هذا حينَ أُكمِلَتِ النْ

    نُعْمَى وأُذهبَ عنّا الخوفُ والحَزَن

    So praise be to Allah, this is when favors are complete

    Fear and grief dispelled from us

  45. لا زالَ من حُسْنِ صُنْعِ اللهِ واقيةٌ

    دونَ اللّيالي على عَلْيائكمْ جُنَن

    Continuous from the good deed of God protecting

    Your heights from nights of madness

  46. ما طاف بالبيتِ زُوّارٌ وما رُفعَتْ

    فيه الأكُفُّ وما سِيقَتْ له بُدُن

    No visitors circled the house, no palms lifted

    And no enmity for it, safe and secure
