1. فديتُكَ رابني الإعراضُ عنّي

    وذلك قد يَريبُ من الكَريمِ

    I ransomed you, but estrangement from me was ordained

    And that may cast doubt on one noble

  2. ولم أعرِفْ له سبباً لعَمْري

    سوى الإضجارِ بالنّظْمِ السّقيم

    And I never knew a reason for it, by my life

    Other than tedium with insipid verse

  3. وقد طوَّلْتُ في الأبياتِ جِدّاً

    وإنْ أَدلَلْتُ بالوُدِّ القديم

    And I have made the lines overly long

    Even if I have shown familiar affection of old

  4. فلا تَسمَحْ بما أنا مُستحِقٌّ

    ولا يكُ قَدُّ سَيْري من أديمي

    So do not tolerate what I deserve

    Nor let the span of my journey be from my hide

  5. فليس جوابَ تطويلٍ عظيمٍ

    سوى استعمالِ تقصيرٍ عظيم

    For there is no response to lengthy prolongation

    Other than employing mighty brevity
