1. وعَدتْ باستراقةٍ للّقاء

    وبإهداء زوْرةٍ في خفَاءِ

    She promised stolen moments to meet

    And to present a rose in secrecy

  2. وأطالَتْ مَطْلَ المُحب إلى أنْ

    وجَدتْ خُلْسَةً من الأعداء

    She prolonged the lover's waiting until

    She found a moment safe from enemies

  3. ثم غارتْ من أن يُماشيَها الظلْ

    لُ فزارتْ في ليلةٍ ظَلماء

    Then she was jealous that the shadow would accompany him

    So she visited on a dark night

  4. ثُمّ خافَتْ لمّا رأتْ أنجمَ الّلي

    لِ شَبيهاتِ أعيُنِ الرُّقبَاء

    Then she feared when she saw the stars of night

    Like the eyes of spies

  5. فاستنَابَتْ طيفاً يُلمُّ ومَن يَمْ

    لكُ عَيْناً تَهُمُّ بالإغفاء

    So she deputized an apparition to gather him up

    One whose eyes verge on slumber

  6. هكذا نَيْلُها إذا نوَّلتْنا

    وعَناءٌ تَسَمُّحُ البُخلاء

    That’s how she leans when she turns away from us

    Hardship itself makes the stingy gracious

  7. يَهْدِمُ الإنتهاءُ باليأسِ منها

    ما بناه الرّجاءُ بالإبتداء

    Fulfillment with despair destroys

    What hope built up in the beginning

  8. وقليلُ الإحسانِ عندي كثيرٌ

    لو تَوقَّعْتُه من الحَسناء

    The little kindness from her I see as much

    If I had expected it from the beauty

  9. فمتى للغليلِ يا صاح يَشْفي

    مَن شكا ظَمْأةً إلى ظَمياء

    So when will anguish be healed, my friend, by one

    Who complained of thirst to the thirsty?

  10. هو جَدّى المَوسومُ بالغَدْرِ في الحُبْ

    بِ متى ما اتَّهمْتُه بالوفاء

    That’s my grandfather, branded with betrayal in love

    Whenever I accused him of loyalty

  11. كلّما مال مَن أُحبُّ لادُنا

    ئىَ لَجّ الزّمانُ في إقصائي

    Whenever she I love leaned away

    Time exposed me to abandonment

  12. ولَعَهْدي واسْمي إلى أُذْنِ أسما

    ء لحُبّي كالقُرْطِ في الإسماء

    And my name and pact are to the ear of heaven

    Like earrings in the sky

  13. قبلَ تَعتادُ من عِذارى طُلوعاً

    كُلَّ يومٍ بَيضاءُ في سَوداء

    Before it grew accustomed, from chaste dawns

    A different white dawn each day

  14. حين أغدو لا للحبيبةِ من ده

    رِي ولا للشّبيبةِ استخْفائي

    When I rise, neither for the beloved

    Nor for youth is my concealment

  15. لست أُنسىَ يومَ الرّحيلِ وقد غَرْ

    رَدَ حادي الرّكائبِ الأنضاء

    I won’t forget the day of departure though

    The leader of the caravan hurried away the excellent camels

  16. وسُليَمْى مَنَّتْ بِردِّ سلامي

    حين جَدَّ الوداعُ بالإيماء

    Sulaima granted a cool greeting

    When parting beckoned farewell

  17. سفَرتْ كي تُزوِّدَ الصَّبَّ منها

    نظْرةً حين آذنتْ بالتّنائي

    She traveled in order to provide the youth

    A glance when she announced our separation

  18. وأَرتْ أنها من الوَجْدِ مثْلي

    ولها للفراقِ مثْلُ بُكائي

    And she saw that she was, in passion, like me

    And that she, for parting, had my weeping

  19. فَتباكَتْ ودمعُها كسقيطِ الطْ

    طلِ في الجُلَّنارةِ الحَمراءِ

    So she wept and her tears were like beads

    Falling on a red shawl

  20. وحكى كُلّ هُدْبةٍ لي قَناةً

    أنهَرتْ فَتْقَ طعنةٍ نَجلاء

    And every tear told me a canal

    Poured from a piercing, frank wound

  21. فتَرى الدمعتين في حُمرةِ اللّوْ

    نِ سَوداءً وما هُما بسَواء

    So you see two teardrops in the redness

    Of her cheeks, black yet not equal

  22. خَدها يَصْبُغُ الدّموعَ ودمْعي

    يَصبُغُ الخَدَّ قانياً بالدِماء

    Her cheek dyes the tears and my tears

    Dye the cheek, dripping blood

  23. خَضَب الدّمعَ خَدَّها باحمرارٍ

    كاختضابِ الزجاجِ بالصّهباء

    The blood dyed her cheek red

    Like glass dyed with yellow orpiment

  24. يا صَفيّي من الأخلاِّء والعَي

    شُ حَرامٌ إلاّ مَع الأصفياء

    My intimate, far from the vile and the low life

    Forbidden, unless with the virtuous

  25. لا تَسَلْني من أين أقبلَ سُقْمي

    وأَبِنْ لي من أين أبغي شِفائي

    Don’t ask me where my sickness comes from

    And show me where I want healing

  26. مَن عذيري وهل عَذيرٌ من الأيْ

    يامِ مهما أَفرطْنَ في الإلتواء

    Who excuses me, what excuse from days

    No matter how twisting in perversion?

  27. من زمانٍ جَفا فأضحَتْ ولم تَظْ

    لِمْ بنوهُ أشباهَه في الجَفاء

    From an age that was harsh and whose children

    Were like it in harshness

  28. وكرامٍ مثْلِ الأهِّلةِ أيا

    مَ سِرارٍ فما لَها من تَراء

    And generosity like the new moon

    Days of concealment, so it has no ebb and flow

  29. وقَرَاري على وُعودِ الأماني

    وارتقابي لها صباحَ مَساء

    My resolve upon the hopes of wishes

    And my awaiting them morning and evening

  30. واعتِلاقي بعَزْمةٍ ثُمّ لا أدْ

    ري أمامي خيرٌ لها أم ورائي

    My clinging to a will, then I don’t know

    If good before me or behind

  31. ومَبيتي مؤُرَّقاً طُولَ لَيلي

    واقتْضائي مَدائحَ الكُبَراء

    My wakeful nights, throughout the dark

    And my seeking great men’s praises

  32. وهُمُ مُعرِضون عنّي وآبى

    أنا إلاّ أُكرومَتي وحَيائي

    Yet they spurn me, and I refuse

    But to perfect my manners and modesty

  33. ذا امتعاضٍ أُخفي اختلالي عنِ الرَّا

    ئي كإخفاءِ واصلٍ للرّاء

    A disgust I hide, my imbalance from the onlooker

    Like the disguise of the ostentatious

  34. فأَعِد نَظْرةً بعَينكّ تُبصرْ

    عَجَباً إنْ عَرَفْتَ عُظْمَ ابتلائي

    So look again with your eye, you’ll be amazed

    If you know the extent of my trial

  35. كيف حالي ما بينَ دَهْرٍ وشِعْرٍ

    ذاك والى هَدْمي وهذا بنائي

    What is my state between an age and poetry

    That ruins me and this rebuilds me

  36. في زمانٍ لم يُبْقِ في قَرْضِ شعْرٍ

    طائلاً من غنىً ولا مِن غَناء

    In a time that left no gain for poetry

    Of wealth or song remaining

  37. ما عدا غَيْظَ حاسدٍ كلّما استُح

    سِنَ شعري معْ قلّة الإجداء

    Beyond the envy of a envier whenever

    My poetry was excellent despite scarcity of means

  38. ما تَرى اليومَ والمُعسكرُ يا صا

    حِ مَضَمَّ للنَّاس رَحْبُ الفناء

    You see today the army camp, my friend

    Crowded with people in the wide expanse

  39. أنّني منه في ذُرا مَعشرٍ غُرْ

    رٍ وأبناء دولةٍ غَرّاء

    That I am among a stray group, vagabonds

    And sons of a haughty state

  40. نازِلاً وسْطَهم وإن كنتُ منهم

    عند قَصْدِ التّقريبِ والإدناء

    Settling among them though I am far from them

    In intention of drawing near and stooping

  41. مثْلَ ما في القرآنِ من سورةِ النّا

    سِ يُرَى بعدَ سُورةِ الشُعراء

    Like what is in the Qur’an of the Sura of Man

    Seen after the Sura of the Poets

  42. لا التفاتٌ ولا سؤالٌ عنِ الحا

    لِ ولا نَظْرةٌ من الإرعاء

    No heeding or asking after my state

    No glance of pity

  43. ذو انكسارٍ في كسْرِ مُخلقةٍ طَلْ

    ساءَ مَحطوطةِ المطا وقصْاء

    Dejected in a nature of a well-worn cloak

    Laid down, its lining and trim torn

  44. وهْي غبَراءُ مَن رآني وصَحبي

    تحتها خالَنا بني غَبراء

    And it is dusty whoever saw me and my companions

    Under it our condition was dusty

  45. وأُراها ما طنَّبتْ مثْلَ ذي الغَب

    راء كَفُّ امرىءٍ على الغَبراء

    I make it seem never like this

    The palm of a man upon the dusty ground

  46. شاب منهم سَوادهُا غيرَ مَظْلو

    مٍ بطُلِ الإصباح والإمساءِ

    A youth among them whose darkness

    Is not blamed, the hero of dawn and evening

  47. تَركتَهْا الأيامُ لو نصعَ الّلو

    نُ كآلٍ يلوُج في بَيْداء

    Time left it so if the color had faded

    Like foliage swaying in the desert

  48. تَتَراءى للناظرِينَ خيالا

    فهْي وسَطَ الهواء مثْلُ الهواء

    It appears to onlookers like an apparition

    Among the air like the air itself

  49. كلّما مَسّها من الشّرقِ ضّوءٌ

    خِفْتُ وشْك اختلاطِها بالهَباء

    Whenever the light from the east touched it

    I feared its blending into the dust

  50. هذه حالتي وفي مثْلِ هذي

    حَلّتي إن حلَلْتُ معْ نُظرَائي

    This is my state, and in the like of this

    My condition if I stayed with my peers

  51. ولكَم ناقصٍ قصيرِ يدِ الفَضْ

    لِ وحاشا معاشرَ الكُرماء

    And for how many flaws, hands short

    Of merit - far from the generous company!

  52. حاجِبٌ دون حاجِبِ الشمسِ عنه

    ظِلُّ مَبنيّةٍ له قَوراء

    A brow beneath the sun’s brow shades him

    The shadow of a ruin behind

  53. لائقٌ أن يقالَ فيه وفيها

    واللّيالي مُعتادَةُ الإعتداء

    Fit to say about him and her

    And the nights accustomed to encroaching

  54. ما حَكَوا في النّواةِ والمَعقليّ ال

    مُبْتَنى عن حُرَيبٍ الفَأفاء

    What they related of the elite and the unassailable

    Mansion, safe from the grumbling wasteland

  55. كلُّ قومٍ أفاضَ قومٌ عليهم

    خِلعاً ذاتَ بهجةٍ وبَهاء

    Every people exposed by a people

    Adorned with new garb of delight and splendor

  56. كنسيجِ الرياضِ وشّتْه بالأن

    وا رِ صُبْحاً أناملُ الأنواء

    Like the weaving of gardens that the fingers of breeze

    Adorned at morning with patterns

  57. غيْرَ أنّا من كلِّ ما خَلَع النّا

    سُ وأسنَوا من بُردَةٍ ورِداء

    Except we were content from all the people's robes

    And what they deemed of hooded cloak and mantle

  58. قد قنَعِنا بخِلعةٍ ذاتِ تَلْمي

    ع قليل أوخرقة بيضاء

    With a worn garment of slight patch

    Or a white rag full of holes

  59. حُلوةِ القَدِّ رَحْبةِ الذَّيْلِ بَرد الصْ

    صَيفِ في حِضنِها وحَرُّ الشِّتاء

    Sweetness of waist, expanse of train, cool in summer

    In its embrace, and hot in winter

  60. جَيبُها في ضلوعِها والعُرَا في الذْ

    ذيْلِ إن نُشِرّتْ غداةَ اكتِساء

    Its bosom is in its ribs, and the penis

    In the train, when it's donned in the morning

  61. ثُمّ من بعدِ أن تُزرَّرَ يُكسا

    ها الفتَى وهو أظرَفُ الأشيْاء

    Then after she was arrayed, the lad would wear it

    And he is most elegant of things

  62. مَلْبَسٌ للحُلولِ يُخلَعُ للرِح

    لةِ عند استماعِ رَجْع الحُداء

    Worn for abiding, doffed for departure

    When the wanderer’s call is heard

  63. إن أقامُوا عَلا الرؤوسَ وإن را

    موا مَسيرا عَلا على الأمطاء

    If they stood, atop the heads, and if

    They traveled, it was ample for the open country

  64. رَكّبتْه الأيدي كَتركيبِ بَيْتٍ

    من قَريضٍ مُناسبِ الأجْزاء

    Her hands tailored it like a structure

    Of consistent, well-proportioned parts

  65. ذو عَروضٍ وذو ضُروبٍ ولا عَي

    بَ لَها لاحِقٌ من الإقواء

    With metrics and genres, no blemish

    Pursuing of coherence

  66. وهْى حَدْباءُ في فَتاءٍ منَ السِنْ

    نِ قريبٍ لافي أوانِ فَتاء

    She is shaggy, in the prime

    Of youth, not in the time of prime

  67. حَدِبٌ قَلْبُها علينا وقد يُمْ

    تع أيضاً تَحَدُّبُ الحَدباء

    My heart leans to her, and the hump

    Of the hunchback may also lean

  68. غيرَ أنْ لا تقومُ إن هي لم تُمْ

    سِكْ بشُعْثٍ مَشْجوجةِ الأقفاء

    But she won’t stand unless she holds

    To disheveled, tangled locks

  69. عَوْجةٌ لي على الجبالِ أُتيحَتْ

    بعدَ عَهْدٍ قد طالَ بالزَّوراء

    Twisted to me over the mountains, allowed

    After a time long in deception

  70. تَرَكتْني مُعانِياً لمَعانٍ

    وأعادتْ أعادياً أصدقائي

    She left me suffering for sufferings

    And returned enemies my friends

  71. رَنّقت مَشْربي وقد كان عَيْنٌ الشْ

    شَمْسِ والماء دونه في الصّفاء

    She corrupted my life, though it had been

    Like the sun's eye, pure water beneath

  72. بعد عهْدي بعِيشتي وهْي خَضْرا

    ءُ تثَنّى كالبانةِ الغَنّاء

    After my time in ease, while it was green

    Bending like a singing branch

  73. وأموري كأنّها أَلفِاتٌ

    خَطّهُنّ الوَلىُّ في الاستواء

    And my affairs like intimates

    Whose clauses fate wrote in equilibrium

  74. لِوليّ الدينِ المُقدَّمِ سَبْقٌ

    إنْ تبَارَتْ خيْلُ العُلا في الجِراء

    The patron of religion, precedent

    Of lofty steeds in battle, if they competed

  75. لنجيبٍ في دَهْرِه ابنِ نجيبٍ

    وبلوغُ الغاياتِ للنُّجباء

    A noble in his time, son of a noble

    And attainment of goals is for the elite

  76. صارمُ الرّأي يُخجِلُ البيضَ والسُّم

    رَ بحَدِّ اليراعةِ الرَّقْشاء

    Firm in opinion, shaming white swords and brown

    With the sharpness of the polished blade

  77. طالعٌ في ثَنّيةٍ رحبَةِ الذِر

    وةِ للفضلِ صَعْبةِ الرَّقْشاء

    A rising in an expanse of glorious origin

    Of glory, difficult to climb

  78. ناثرٌ ما يزالُ في الطِّرس دُرّاً

    حَسدَتْ حُسنَها نجومُ السّماء

    Strewing in pleasantry what remains

    Pearls envied by stars of heaven

  79. فحَنتْ قَدَّها لِلَقْطٍ منَ الأُفْ

    قِ إليها كوَاكبُ الجوزاء

    So it bent its neck for a piece

    From the horizon to it like stars of Gemini

  80. لو بنو مُقلةٍ رأوْهُ لأضحَى

    ولَقَلّوا لمَجْدهِ من فِداء

    If Banu Muqla saw him, he would be

    Their precious one for whom they sacrifice

  81. بعزيزَيهمُ السّمَّيينِ يُفْدَى

    من عيونٍ لهم ومن آباء

    With their two idols they may be ransomed

    With eyes for them and fathers

  82. ولآلَى أبو عَليٍ يَميناً

    مُظهراً للوليّ صِدْقَ الوَلاء

    And it would lean, father of Abu Ali

    Displaying loyalty to the patron

  83. لا إلى مُقْلةٍ أبى لو عَلمْتُم

    بل إلى مُقلةٍ تَراهُ انتمائي

    No, not to Banu Muqla, if you knew

    Rather to Muqla you see my leaning

  84. دَرَجوا ثمّ جاءَ مَن هو أعلَى

    دَرَجاً فلْيدُمْ قرينَ العَلاء

    They approached, then one higher came

    So let him remain among the lofty

  85. ولنا في الوَليِّ مُسْلٍ عن الوَسْ

    ْمىِّ فلْيبقَ عادِم الأكفاء

    And we have in the patron a model

    So the best of peers remains

  86. كفْؤُكّفِ الولِيِّ لم يُرَ للكُت

    تابِ يوماً في الحُدْث والقدماء

    A peer of the patron was never seen

    In modern or old books

  87. يا ولياً يرَوِّضُ الطرسَ طُولَ الدْ

    دَهْرِ فَضلاً بَقِيتَ للأولياء

    O patron taming steeds the ages long

    Remaining superior for the patrons

  88. هكذا ماطِرَ الأناملِ طَلّاً

    للقراطيس وابِلاً للرّجاء

    From me in the heart a loyalty

    Whose flow remains as long as my praise

  89. نعْمَ ذُخرُ الآمالِ عمْرُك فابقَ الدْ

    دَهرَ للمُرتجي أَمَدَ البقاء

    Pearl of poetry in pure meaning, molded

    So thread it, brother of the most high

  90. زِنتَ وجهَ الدّهرِ الذي شانَهُ النّق

    صُ فلا زلْتَ غُرّةَ الدَّهماء

    Disposition's molding is the hand of thought

    And hands' molding is jewelry of women

  91. أنت لولاك كان للناسِ في الأف

    واهِ ذِكْرُ الكريمِ كالعَنقاء

    A natural gift came to you, so fashion it beautifully

    An innocent dawn, for beauty is to fashioning

  92. لك منّي في الصّدْرِ حُسنُ ولاءٍ

    رَشْحُه ما بقيتُ حُسْنُ ثناء

    From your loyalists to virtue in love

    And loyal to your noble ancestors

  93. دُرُّ لَفْظٍ في تبْرِ مَعْنىً مَصوغٍ

    فتقرَّطْهُ يا أخا العلياء

    And the affection of free men through time

    From the noble heritage of fathers to sons

  94. فَحُلِيُّ الرّجالِ صَوْغُ يدِ الفكْ

    رِ وصَوغُ الأيدي حُلِيُّ النِّساء

    Time hoards from you amid the days

    Rancor of grace and shine

  95. عَفْوَ طبْعٍ جاءتْك فاجْتلِها حس

    ناء بكراً فالحُسنُللاجتلاء

    And for a day it prepares you leadership

    With vigor, zeal, and glory

  96. من مُواليك للفضائلِ حُبّاً

    وموُالي أسلافِك السُّعَداء

    Say to one whose merit shadows

    Though he spurns praise made in independence

  97. ووِدادُ الأحرارِ في الدّهرِ من أش

    رَفِ إرْثِ الآباء للأَبْناء

    So when I send a daughter of my thought to you

    She comes walking in shyness

  98. يَذخرُ الدّهرُ منك في خَللِ الأي

    ْيامِ عَضبْاً ذا رَوْنَق ومَضاء

    If my thought clothes you in praise, how much

    Did the rain shower on the thirsty ground?

  99. وليِومٍ يُعِدُّك المُلْكُ ذي جَدْ

    دٍ وجِدِّ وذي سناً وسَناء

    How can I present praise to you and describe

    The grandeur of aspirations' temptations

  100. قُلْ لَمنْ ظَلَّ فضُلهُ وهْو جَمٌ

    عن مديحٍ يُصاغُ ذا اسِتغناء

    When between you and I in proportion, though

    My mind regarding wisdom surpassed people of the age

  101. فإذا ما بَعْثتُ بابنةِ فكْري

    لك جاءتْ تَمشي على استِحيْاء

    Like in arithmetic, from the Reckoner, the distance

    The follower of marks

  102. إن كَساكَ المديحَ فِكري فكم قد

    أمطَرتْ ديمةٌ على الدأْماء

  103. كيف أُهدِي لكُ الثّناءَ وأوصا

    فُك فُتْنَ الأوهامَ عُظْمَ اعتلاء

  104. وأنا منك في القياسِ وإنْ فا

    قَ بني الدّهرِ خاطري في الذَّكاء

  105. مثْلَما في الحسابِ من واضعِ الشّط

    رنْجِ بالبُعْدِ تابِعُ السِيَماء
