1. بالكُتْبِ طُرّاً كتابٌ خَطَّهُ مَلِكٌ

    بأَنمُلٍ خُلِقتْ للجُودِ والباسِ

    With books as wings a king inscribed this book

    With fingertips created for generosity and heroism

  2. غدا وكاتبُه المَأْمولُ مُوصِلُه

    حتّى تَضاعفَ تَشْريفي وإيناسي

    Tomorrow its writer and hoped deliverer

    Will increase my honor and companionship

  3. قد غار من مَسِّ أيدي الرُّسْلِ لي فأَبى

    بقَبسةِ الفَخرِ منه غيرَ إقباس

    He was jealous of the touching by the messengers’ hands

    With the torch of pride he refused any kindling from him

  4. لم تَدرِ كَفّيَ مَاذا منه أَعبقَها

    كافورُ طِرْسٍ له أو مِسْكُ أَنقاس

    My palms did not know what it was perfumed with

    The camphor of Tarsh or the musk of Anqas

  5. بل عَرْفُ عُرْفِ الّذي أَملاهُ عَطَّرنا

    لا مِسْكُ نِقْسٍ ولا كافورُ أَطْراس

    Rather the scent of the one who dictated it perfumed us

    Not the musk of Niqsh nor camphor of Atras

  6. لمّا تَناولتُه منه وقلتُ لقد

    أُتيحَ للكوكبِ العُلْويّ إلماسي

    When I took it from him and said indeed

    The highest star was made accessible to touch

  7. وضَعْتُ مَطويَّه إعظامَ صاحبِه

    منّي على الرأْسِ فيما بينَ جُلاّسي

    I placed its scroll in veneration of its owner

    From me on the head while sitting amongst others

  8. حتّى إذا نشَرتْه الكَفُّ لم تَرَ لي

    إلاّ سُجوداً وإلاّ لَثْمَ قرطاس

    Until when my palm opened it saw naught from me

    Except prostration and kissing the paper

  9. كأنّني قَلَمُ المُنْشيهِ مُعتمِداً

    لكُلِّ حَرفٍ قياماً لي على الرّاس

    As if I were the reed pen leaning

    For every letter standing on my head

  10. أُوتيتُه بيمينِي ثُمَّ سِيقَ إلى ال

    جِنانِ طَرْفي بَرغمِ الحاسِدِ الخاسي

    I received it with my right hand then it was taken

    To the gardens though the envious despised me

  11. من بَعدِ ما طالَ من بُعْدٍ تَرقُّبُه

    وأَوجَسَ القلبُ خَوفاً أَيّ إيجاس

    After prolonged waiting and the heart

    Feared what danger - at last it came

  12. وسَجدةُ النُّجحِ إن فَتَّشْتَ أكثرُ ما

    تَجيءُ والمرءُ يَتْلو آيةَ الياس

    The prostration of success - if you examine

    Often occurs when one recites the verse of despair

  13. في أَصفهانَ أَتى والخُوزُ مَقْصدُه

    والدَّهرُ ضاربُ أخماسٍ لأَسداس

    In Isfahan it came and Khosrow its destination

    While time beats five for a sixth

  14. سَهْمٌ تَوقَّفَ حتّى جاءه هدَفٌ

    يَسعَى وما بمزيدِ العِزِّ من باس

    An arrow paused until it met its target

    Heading while the mighty have no increase in heroism

  15. لقد تَقَدَّم قَدْري مَنْ تأَخّرَهُ

    حتّى تَتناولَنيهِ أَشْرَفُ النّاس

    My destiny preceded whom it was late for

    Until the noblest person would hand it to me

  16. كأسٌ دِهاقٌ لآدابٍ صُبِحْتُ بها

    من كَفّ موليَ ولكنْ طَرفيَ الحاسي

    A cup of wine for manners I was endowed with

    From the palm of my master but my elated eye

  17. تَخِذْتُه عُوذةً لي من كرامتِه

    تَنْفي عنِ القلبِ منّى كُلَّ وسواس

    Took it as a charm from his generosity

    Removing from the heart all anxiety from me

  18. فما رأيتُ كتاباً قبلَ رُؤْيَتِه

    على تقادُمِ أَزْمانٍ وأَحْراس

    So I did not see a book before seeing it

    Despite the passage of time and eras

  19. ما بينَ ضَمٍّ وفَتْحٍ منه قد سَعِدَتْ

    بكَ الوزراةُ إرْغاماً لأنكاس

    What graces between disconnected and connected script

    The viziers gained from you compelling the unwilling

  20. كالجفْنِ أُطبِقَ ليلاً ثُمَّ فُتِّقَ في

    صُبْحٍ أَضاءَ لأبصارٍ وأَحساس

    Like an eyelid closed at night then split in

    Dawn that illuminated sights and senses

  21. فَفُض عن كرمٍ غَمْرٍ وعن كَلِمٍ

    غُرٍّ لجُرْحِ فؤادي كُلُّها آس

    So explain with gracious opinion you harbor

    With grace of attire the disposition of a person measures

  22. وفيه بَعضُ بِضاعاتي التّي سلَفتْ

    أضحَتْ إليّ وقد رُدّتْ لإفلاس

    The adornment of a sword is but the adornment of its wearer

    Pride - so wear it however you wish my attire

  23. وذِكْرُ عهدٍ مضَى ما كنتُ قَطُّ له

    يا أَكرَم النّاسِ لولا أنت بالنّاس

    God is guardian of what he granted you of blessings

    When kings feared one day with guardians

  24. أيّامَ تُصبِحُ دَلْوي غيرَ واصلةٍ

    على إطالةِ اشطاني وأَمْراسي

    Keeping you in rule what singing thrush boasted

    The meadow prided amongst roses and myrtles

  25. فاليومَ تَجديدُ نُعمَى اللهِ فيكَ لنا

    أَنسَى الورَى دِرّةٌ تَمرِي بإبساس

    O most just of people judge the people with insight

    With justice and build on foundations firmly based

  26. وِزارةٌ خُتِمَتْ خَتْماً بذي كرَمٍ

    لم يَعْتَلِقْ عِرضُه يوماً بأَدْناس

    Leave no loyal minister between jaws and fangs

    For today none can raise whom you debase

  27. بصاحبٍ عادلٍ في عَقْدِ حُبْوتِه

    بَحرُ العطايا وطَودُ السُّؤْدَدِ الرّاسي

    Recall the saying of Abbas son of Mirdas

    I scattered my arrows though withdrawing their tips

  28. رَقيقُ وَجهٍ وأَلفاظٍ لسائلهِ

    والقلبُ منه على أَموالهِ قاس

    At you while stringing my bow and composing verses

    Shortening my breath praising you

  29. سَمْحٌ على الدّينِ بالدّنيا أناملُهُ

    سُحْبُ النّدى وسِواهُ الطّاعمُ الكاسي

    So direct good counsel you harbor within

    With good garb - the disposition of a person is its measure

  30. إليك يا شرفَ الدّينِ انتهَتْ رُتَبٌ

    من العُلا لم تُقَسْ يَوماً بمِقْياس

    The adornment of a sword is but the adornment of its bearer

    Pride - so dress it as you wish my attire

  31. للدَّسْتِ أصبحْتَ مثلَ الرُّوحِ في جَسَدٍ

    منه فعاش ومثْلَ الرّاحِ في كاس

    God sustains what privileges he granted you

    When kings feared a day with protectors

  32. يَرَى ويَسمَعُ مَن يَلْقاهُ من أَحدٍ

    وكان من قَبْلُ جِسماً غيرَ حَسّاس

    Keeping you in rule - never did a singing bird boast

    The meadow prided between roses and lilies

  33. فلْيَهْنِه شَرَفٌ في جُودِه سَرَفٌ

    وبأْسُه الدَّهْرَ مَوزونٌ بقِسْطاس

    O most just of people, judge the people with insight,

  34. لا فارقَ العِزُّ غاباً أنت ساكِنُه

    من ضَيْغَمٍ لطُلَى الفُرْسانِ فَرّاس

    مِقْدارُ لَبْثِ سهامٍ فوقَ أَعجاس

    أَضحَى مُثيراً لها من تحتِ أَرماس

    نُطْقَ الطُّيورِ به من بَعْدِ إخْراس

    Keeping you in rule - never did a singing bird boast,

  41. بالصّاحبِ العادلِ المأمولِ أَمطَر لي

    أُفْقي وأَثمرَ بالأغراضِ أغراسي

  42. لا تَرقُبِي يا ركابي بعدَها سفَراً

    ففي ذُراه نَفَضتُ اليومَ أَحلاسي

  43. نَفْضَ الحُطَيئةِ لمّا حَطّ أَرحُلَه

    بعدَ ابنِ بَدْرٍ إلى النّدْبِ ابنِ شَمّاس

  44. حَقرْتُ كُلَّ الورىَ لمّا اكتحلْتُ به

    والشمسُ تُغني ضُحىً عن ضَوء نِبْراس

  45. يَا شمسُ إن شِئتِ بعدَ اليوم فانتَقِبي

    فمِن مُحيّاهُ إقماري وإشماسي

  46. ويا سحابُ كَفاني فَضلُ نائلهِ

    فأمطُرْ على دِمَنٍ بالبيدِ أَدْراس

  47. يا أَعدلَ النّاسِ حَكِّمْ في الورى نظَراً

    عَدْلاً وأَحكِمْ بناءً فوقَ آساس

  48. لا تَترُكَنّ وَليّاً ذا مُخالَصةٍ

    فيهمْ لَقىً بينَ أنيابٍ وأَضراس

  49. فاليومَ لا رافعٌ مَن أنت واضِعُه

    فاذكُرْ مقالةَ عبّاسِ بنِ مِرداس

  50. لقد نثَرتُ سهامي من كِنانتِها

    أَرمِي عِداكَ وقد وَتّرْتُ أقواسي

  51. وقد شَهرتُ لساني وهْو ذو شُطَبٍ

    وقد قَصْرتُ على مَدْحِيكَ أنفاسي

  52. فادْلُلْ على حُسْنِ رأْيٍ منك تُضمِرُه

    بحُسْنِ زِيٍّ بعِطْفِ المَرء مَيّاس

  53. ما حِليةُ السَّيفِ إلاّ حَلْيُ لابسِه

    فَخْراً فما شئْتَ فالْبَسْهُ بإلْباسي

  54. اللهُ حارسُ ما أَولاكَ من نِعَمٍ

    إذا الملوكُ اتَّقَوا يَوماً بحُرّاس

  55. مُبقيكَ في المُلْكِ ما غَنّتْ مُطوَّقةٌ

    وفاخَر الرَّوضُ بين الوَرْدِ والآس
