1. سَرى ولثامُ الصُّبحِ قد كاد يَنحَطُّ

    خَيالٌ تَسدَّى القاعَ والحيُّ قد شَطُّوا

    The dawn has slipped away, drawing off its veil,

    While shadows stretch across the sands and tribesmen strike their tents.

  2. وزار وقد نَدَّى النّسيمُ حُلِيَّهُ

    فبات يُباري الثَّغْرَ في بَرْدِه السِمط

    The morning breeze blows cool, the birds trill clear,

    Chilling lips with wine as sweet as clover's breath.

  3. وما عَطّرتْ نجداً صَباها وإنّما

    سَرى وهْو مَجرورٌ على إثْره المِرط

    The zephyr never scented Nejd's plains like this;

    Only where you camp does fragrance grace the air.

  4. هو البدرُ وافَى والثُّريّا كأنّها

    على الأُفْقِ مُلقىً منه من عَجَلٍ قُرْط

    You are the moon, unveiled, the Pleiades wheel round you

    In the gathered dusk like pearls a pendant sports

  5. من البيضِ يَهْدي الركبَ باللّيلِ وجْهُها

    إذا ضلّ مثْلي في غدائِرها المُشط

    At night they guide the riders; and my soul, lost

    In those dark tresses, you espy with loving eyes.

  6. تَراكَ بعَينَيها المَهاةُ إذا رنَتْ

    ويُعطيك ليتَيْها الغزالُ الّذي يَعْطو

    The black-eyed gazelle gives to you his plaintive cry;

    You loose the wished-for greeting when you smile.

  7. عَقيلَةُ رَهْطٍ لو أَخلَّتْ برَهْطِها

    كفاها بأنّ العاشِقينَ لها رَهْط

    If she would leave her clan, then all the lovers here

    Would be enough for her; her tribe, all ardent men.

  8. يَحُفُّ بها من سِرِّ قَيْسٍ فَوارسٌ

    تَخُبُّ بهمْ خَيلٌ لوجْهِ الفلا تَغْطو

    Valorous horsemen guard her in the gloom, and steeds

    Champing the bit surround her tent on every side.

  9. إذا ما تَثَنّتْ والقنا مُحدِقٌ بها

    تَرى الخُوطَ في أثناء ما يُنبِتُ الخَطّ

    When she draws up her train, the slender bows shine out

    Among the cushions like eyebrows elegantly curved.

  10. هُمُ يومَ زَمُّوا للفراقِ رِكابَهم

    رَمونا بسَهْمٍ في القلوبِ فلم يُخْطوا

    She climbs to glory's pinnacle; should rivals rise

    Envy casts them down, despairing and abashed.

  11. وساروا بأفلاكٍ من العيسِ فوقها

    كواكبُ إلاّ أنّ أبراجَها الغُبط

    What man but you in all the world can pour at will

    The thundering clouds of generosity and rain?

  12. وألْوتْ بَصبري يومَ ولَّتْ غَريرةٌ

    تُحكَّمُ في نَفْسِ المُعنّى فتَشْتَطّ

    Your right hand firmly holds all kingdoms in its grasp;

    None can describe the gifts your other hand bestows.

  13. فَرشْتُ لها خَدّي لتَخْطو كرامةً

    عليه فلم تَمْلِكْ من التِّيهِ أن تَخْطو

    Your pen exacts a painful sum from every foe

    In drops of blood, lines of anguish, chapters of lament.

  14. وعُدْتُ ولي سِلْكٌ من الجِسمِ ناحلٌ

    عليهِ لِدُرِّ الدَّمعِ من مُقْلتي خَرْط

    It speaks what hearts conceal; no secrets can be kept

    From you. What pillared halls enshrine, your eyes make bare.

  15. يَبُلُّ البُكا خَدّي وفي القلبِ غُلَّتي

    وكم سُقِيتْ أَرضٌ وفي غَيرِها القَحْط

    Battles are savage beasts that you let loose to ward

    The wolf away, when war-clouds fill your subjects' skies.

  16. فلا زال من دَمعِ الغوادي على اللِّوى

    سُقيطٌ يُحلَّى منه باللُّؤْلُؤ السِّقْط

    Victorious armies leave your enemies o'erthrown

    Like slaughtered beasts, scattered in pieces on the ground.

  17. مَعارِفُ أشباهُ الصّحائفِ وُضَّحٌ

    لأيدي البِلَى في كُلِّ رَسْمٍ لها خَطّ

    When you divide kind acts, your hands weigh out the shares

    With justice. Yours the portion, yours the rightful great.

  18. حكَى النُّؤْىُ منها مَشْقَ بعضِ حُروفِه

    ويحكي الأثافي السُّودَ من بَعْضِها النَّقْط

    We visited your noble son, pillar of state,

    And all who cherished us were courteous without bounds.

  19. وعَهدي برَبْعِ العامريّةِ مَرّةً

    وَرَكْبُ الهوَى منّا بِواديهِ يُحْتَطّ

    Majestic prince whose gathered banners bring renown!

    One hand sheds treasure, one imposes firm control.

  20. وشَرْطُ اللّيالي أن يَفينَ لأَهْلِه

    وتَأْبَى اللّيالي أن يَصِحَّ لها شَرط

    A youth whose ring and sword-hilt never leave his grasp,

    Whose palm extends or else contracts in war and peace.

  21. فآهاً على تلك العُهودِ الّتي مضَتْ

    لقد دُرسَتْ حتّى كأنْ لم تَكُنْ قَطّ

    His death is life and breath to all, while just revenge

    Takes only what it needs and generously forgoes the rest.

  22. كذا الدّهرُ إنّ تَكشِفْ حقيقةَ خُلْقِه

    تَجِدْ لا الرِّضا منه يَدومُ ولا السُّخْط

    They quickly pardon if asked to show mercy,

    And if asked to wreak vengeance, they rein it back at will.

  23. ولا تَضَعُ الأَيّامُ شيئاً مكانَه

    ولكنّها العَشْواءُ سِيرتُها الخَبط

    Still from your envious foes' eyes tears of anguish pour

    And still their throats yield blood beneath our warriors' spears.

  24. وزائرةٍ لِلَّيلِ قُرْبٌ بشَخْصِها

    إليَّ وللفجرِ المُنيرِ بها شَحْط

    I am the servant of your bounty; from a glance

    Its radiant flood has turned my desolation green.

  25. كأنّ الدُّجى منّي شبابٌ لِمَيْلها

    إليَّ به والصُّبحَ في طَرْدِها وَخْط

    Sweet chanted nights in gardens come to mind, recalled

    Like paradise, from which great Adam fell away.

  26. سرَى من أعالي الرَّقمتَيْنِ خَيالُها

    وقد حان من عُقْلِ النُّجومِ بها نَشط

    If now the crown prevents your favor blessing me,

    What man escapes Fate's sudden change or fickle chance?

  27. ونحن على الأكوارِ مِيلٌ من السُرَى

    بِوادي الخُزامى والمَطيُّ بنا تَمْطو

    In my heart's secret folds, the robes of patience tear

    With every friend remembered since those days gone by.

  28. ركائبُ أبقَى الوَخْدُ منهنَّ في الفلا

    شَبيهاً بما أَوهَى من الأَنسُعِ المَغْط

    Let no man wish me solaced after you depart;

    Without you I am lost, bewildered, undone, distraught.

  29. فللّهِ من عِيسٍ بَرَى السّيْرُ نَحْضَها

    نَجاءً كما الوَى بأنساعِها المَعْط

    And if the nights proved false to that dear time we shared,

    Ask what just act or right those dark hours ever wrought.

  30. رفَعْنا لإدراكِ المعالي رِحالَنا

    ومادونَ لُقيانِ الأميرِ لها حَطّ

    But while Mohammed lives, hopes endures that joy and peace

    Will spread their wings again and fortune smile once more.

  31. فزُرْنا ظهيرَ الدينِ وابنَ قِوامِه

    وكُلُّ وَساعٍ من نَجائِبنا تَعْطو

    With your glance strike envy blind in those who scorn your state;

    Silence their rage, rebuke the slander they have sought!

  32. لقد ضَمَّ أشتاتَ المحامدِ ماجدٌ

    يَداهُ يدٌ تَسخو ندى وَيدٌ تَسطو

    Say to each wary foe who tasted wrath before:

    "Have care! The least spark can set off rage's fire."

  33. فتىً ظلَّ يزْهَى السيّفُ والسَّيبُ أنه

    يَخُصُّهما من كفِّه القَبضُ والبَسْط

    Restrain your impetuous self, rash pride refrain;

    My feebleness makes larger anger seem but sport.

  34. يُميتُ ويُحيي في الوَرى غيرَ أنّه

    عطاياهُ دَأْبٌ وانتِقاماتُه فُرط

    Do not recall my many sins and grave misdeeds,

    But cancel all apart from what your grace has taught.

  35. بيمناهُ ضَبْطٌ للممالكِ كُلّها

    وليس لأَدنَى ما يَجودُ به ضَبْط

    Long may your kingdom shelter those who praise your name;

    You are their mighty arm, their shield, their vital strength.

  36. له قلمٌ يَقتَصُّ من أَرؤسِ العدا

    بما قد جنَى في رأسهِ الثَّقُّ والقَطّ

    Still may its noble pillars stand above them, clouds

    That bring the rain-showers down and never fail at length.

  37. وَينطِقُ عن مَكنونِ قَلْبٍ إذا ارتأَى

    فما لِسُتورِ الغَيْبِ من دونه لَطّ

    Stranger and warrior alike find there the spring

    Whose pearls are maidens' hands, whose knots fine horses form.

  38. ويَحلو الوغَى والعاسِلاتُ أساوِدٌ

    لها في سُوَيْداواتِ أبطالِها بَسط

    Your palm contains all virtue; wisely you divide

    Gifts and rewards, impartial as the Pleiades.

  39. وللدّمِ من نَحْرِ الكَمّيِ صَوائكٌ

    من النّضْحِ حَيّاتُ الرّماح بها رُقْط

    Take them; because of you, my heart now bubbles up

    Like wine poured sparkling into cups by charming hands.

  40. تَثَنّى العَوالي كَالقُدودِ نَواعِماً

    بِحَيثُ الحَنايا كَالحَواجِبِ تَمتَطُّ

    For me your listening ear's true conquest would surpass

    All fortune's favors, though it heaped them without end.

  41. سَمَت بِوَجيهِ المُلكِ في المَجدِ رُتبَةٌ

    إِذا ما تَعلى الحاسِدونَ لَها اِنحَطّوا

    So flourish ever! Those who seek your presence thrive

    As all their secret dreams and uttered hopes come true.

  42. وَهَل مِن فَتىً جَعدٍ سِواهُ مِنَ الوَرى

    تَجودُ عَلى العِلّاتِ مِنهُ يَدٌ سَبطُ

  43. فَقابَلَ أَطرافَ العُلا في أَماثِلٍ

    لَهُ حينَ يَعزى مِن بُيوتِهِمُ الوَسطُ

  44. مَقاديمُ يَعتَمّوانَ بِالبيضِ نَجدَةً

    فَأَرؤُسُهُم عَصرَ الشَبابِ بِها شُمطُ

  45. إِذا ما لَهُم لَم يُستَبَح يَومَ جودِهِم

    فَيُؤخَذُ ما اِعتَدّوا سَماحاً بَأَن يُعطوا

  46. هُمُ القَومُ إِن يُدعَوا إِلى العَفوِ أَسرَعوا

    كَراماً وَإِن يُدعَوا لِيَنتَقِموا يُبطوا

  47. فَلا زالَ مِن عَينِ الحَسودِ لِمَجدِكُم

    يَسيلُ وَمِن نَحرِ العَدُوِّ دَمٌ عَبطُ

  48. وَما أَنا إِلّا عَبدُ نِعمَتِكَ الَّذي

    لِمَيسَمِها البادي بِصَفحَتِهِ عَلطُ

  49. وَذاكِرُ عَهدٍ مِنكَ إِذ أَنا أَغتَدي

    وَبِالقَومِ لي في ظِلِّ دَولَتِكُم غُبطُ

  50. وَطيبُ لَيالٍ كَالجِنانِ اِفتَقدتُها

    كَآدَمَ مِنها حينَ أَدرَكَهُ الهَبطُ

  51. فَإِن كانَ تاجُ المُلكِ مانِعَ جانِبي

    مِنَ الدَهرِ أَن يَلقاهُ مِن صَرفِهِ ضَغطُ

  52. وَأَيُّ فَتىً مِنهُ تَذَكَّرتُ أَصبَحَت

    عَلَيهِ جُيوبُ الصَبرِ لي وَهيَ تَنعَطُّ

  53. فَلا يَتَمَنّوا سَلوَتي بَعدَ مَوتِهِ

    فَما هِيَ إِلّا في رَمائِمِهِ خَلطُ

  54. فَإِن تَكُنِ الأَيّامُ جارَت بِفَقدِهِ

    فَقُل في اللَيالي أَيُّ أَفعالِها قِسطُ

  55. وَلَكِن إِذا عاشَ الهُماُمُ مُحَمَّدٌ

    فَفيهِ لَنا من نَيلِ كُلِّ مُنىً قِسطُ

  56. وَبَينَ جُفونِ الحاسِدينَ بِلَحظِهِ

    قَتادَةُ غَيظٍ لا يُطالقُ لَها خَرطُ

  57. فَقُل لِعَدُوٍّ ذاقَ سَورَةً بِأَسِهِ

    رُوَيدَكَ إِنَّ النارَ أَوَّلُها سَقطُ

  58. فأَرعِ رعاكَ اللهُ سَمْعَك عِذْرةً

    ضعيفةَ وَقْعِ القولِ أسهُمُها مُرط

  59. وما هو إلاّ أن تَعُمَّ جَرائمي

    بصَفْحِ كما أنحَى على الوَرَقِ الخَبْط

  60. فدام على الرّاجينَ مُلكُك إنّهُم

    غَدوْا وبه من عَيْنِ دَهرهمُ غُطّوا

  61. ولا زالَ مَمدوداً عليك رِواقُها

    سَماءً بغَيْمٍ لا يُتاحُ لها كَشْط

  62. لضَيفِ النّدَى يُمسي بأَفنائِكَ القِرَى

    وخَيْلِ العُلا يُضْحِي بأبوابك الربط

  63. تَقاسَمُ أفعالَ المكارِمِ كَفُّه

    فكلٌّ له قسْمٌ وكلٌ له قِسط

  64. وخُذْها تَهزُّ العِطفَ منكَ تَطرُّباً

    كما شُعشِعَتْ للشَّربِ صَهباءُ إسْفَنْط

  65. هيَ الدُّرُّ منثوراً وغايةُ فَخْرهِ

    بسَمعكِ يوماً أن يكونَ له لَقْط
