1. أَمَلَّ على القلبِ الغرامَ فأبلَغا

    وفي وَصْفِ بَرْحِ الشّوقِ للوُسْعِ أَفرغا

    He made love descend upon my heart, so they reached

    And in describing the agony of longing, poured out as much as they could

  2. وأَوفَى على عُودٍ خَطيبُ صبابةٍ

    من الخَطْبِ مَن أَصغَى إلى سَجعِه صَغا

    And a youthful suitor fulfilled his duty

    To she who listened to his eloquence

  3. وقد رَدَّد الألحانَ للصَّبِّ شائقاً

    فأَلغَى لها قولَ العذولِ الّذي لَغا

    He repeated the melodies for the one who longed

    And so erased the words of the one who blamed which were uttered

  4. وماذا عسى شَيطانُ عَذْلِك صانِعاً

    إذا لم يَجِدْ بينَ الأحبّة مَنْزَغا

    What can your demon of blame do

    When no conflict is found among the loved ones

  5. لئن كان لَومي في هوَى البيضِ سائغاً

    لقد كان إسعادي عليهنَّ أَسوغا

    If my infatuation with fair ones is agreeable

    Making them happy was even more agreeable to me

  6. خليليّ إنْ يَمّمْتُما أرضَ عامرٍ

    فلا تَبْخَلا أن تَسمَعا وتُبلِّغا

    My two friends, if you decide a fertile land

    Do not hesitate to listen and convey

  7. ذكرتُكُمُ والأرضُ يَبْسٌ فلم يَزَلْ

    بعيني البُكا حتّى أسالَ وأَرزَغا

    I remembered you while the land was dry, so

    My eyes did not cease shedding tears until they overflowed

  8. وفي الحيِّ أترابٌ إذا شغَل الفتى

    هواهُنّ لم يَطْرَبْ لأَنْ يَتفَرَّغا

    Among the living are kinsfolk, when a youth's

    Passion for them preoccupies him, he does not rejoice to disengage

  9. ظَلَمْنَ الثّنايا الغُرَّ لمّا صَقلْنَها

    وأَرْشَفْنَها دوني أَراكاً مُمضَّغا

    The charms of the gazelles darkened when they

    Adorned themselves before me, chewing

  10. وفي مُستدارِ الخَدّ من كُلّ غادةٍ

    تَرى سِحْرَ عينَيْها لدِينكَ مُوتِغا

    In the round cheek of each beauty

    You see the magic of her eyes humbling you

  11. عَقارِبُ صُدْغٍ لا يَضُرُّكَ وَصْلُها

    ولكنّما يُمسِينَ بالهَجْرِ لُدَّغا

    The hand of a cheek that will not harm you if joined

    But separation makes me bitten by its sting

  12. سفَرْنَ لنا حتّى تَركْنَ عُيونَنا

    مِلاءً وغادَرْنَ الجوانحَ فُرَّغا

    They traveled until they left our eyes

    Filled with water and emptied the bosoms

  13. فمالي أُحبُّ الآفِلينَ وقد أَرى

    من الغيدِ أقماراً على العيسِ بُزَّغا

    Why should I love the setting ones when I see

    On the horizon, moons placed high

  14. على حينَ أَلوَى الحلْمُ بالجهلِ كَبْرةً

    وعَمّمَ منّي الرّأسَ شَيبٌ تفَشّغا

    Just when dreams intertwined with ignorance greatly

    And white hair spread through my head

  15. وكم ليلةٍ يا لَيلُ قَصّرْتُ طُولَها

    وقَضَيتُ عَيشاً بالبِطالةِ أَرفَغا

    How many a night, O night, I shortened its length

    And spent a life of unemployment, useless

  16. لَهْوتُ بها حتّى ثنَى اللّيلُ صَدرَه

    وعاد الدُّجَى بالصُّبْحِ أَدْهَم أَصبَغا

    Wasting it until the night folded its breast

    And dusk returned at dawn, gloomy, blackish

  17. وعُدُت ولم يَشعُرْ بيَ الحَيُّ غادياً

    يُخلِّفُ هامُ الأُكْمِ طِرْفي مُفَدَّغا

    I returned and none of the living noticed me leaving

    Behind their worries, my eyes bleary

  18. أَقُدُّ أديمَ البيدِ بالسّيرِ حيثما

    وجَدْتُ وراءَ العِزِّ في الأرضِ مَنسَغا

    I lead the leather of separation in travel wherever

    I find glory in the land attainable

  19. بذي غُرَّةٍ ضافي الحُجولِ كأنّما

    تَوَضّأَ من ماءِ الصّباحِ فأَسْبَغا

    With the flush of youth like one who has performed ablution

    With morning water and so covered over

  20. عسى يَشْتَفي من لاعجِ الشّوقِ مُدْنَفٌ

    بأنفاسِ عُلْويِّ الرّياحِ تَنشّغا

    Perhaps one suffering from the agony of longing may be gratified

    By the breaths of the passing winds that blow

  21. أَتملِكُ غَضَّ الطَّرْفِ يا صاحِ بعدما

    تَزيّنَ بالحَلْيِ الثَّرى وتَزيّغا

    Can I restrain my gaze, O companions, after

    The land has adorned itself and flourished?

  22. أَرى صَنَعَ الأنواء أَظْهرَ حذْقَه

    فَوشّعَ أَبرادَ الرّياضِ وَصبّغا

    I see the work of the breeze at its utmost skill

    As it opened the blossoms of the gardens and colored them

  23. وفي عَذَبِ الأفنانِ من كُلِّ أيكةٍ

    كَرائنُ للألحانِ يَغدونَ صُوَّغا

    In the soft melodies of each coquette

    Are notes for the melodies that chant at dawn

  24. كأنّ الرّبيعَ الطّلقَ والطّيرَ أصبحَتْ

    لأيّامهِ تَدعو بمُخْتلِفِ اللُّغا

    As if springtime at its prime and the birds

    Call in different languages for its days

  25. زمانُ جَلالِ الدّينِ أقبلَ فاغتَدى

    به شُعراءَ كُلُّ مَن فيه بَبَّغا

    The days of Al-Malik Al-Zahir have come, so the poets

    Of all those in it chanted

  26. وفاؤوا إلى ظلٍّ من العيشِ لم يزَلْ

    له اللهُ من لطْفٍ على الخَلْقِ مُسبِغا

    They attained a life in shade that never ceased

    To clothe them in God's kindness for people

  27. حَصودٌ بحَدِّ السّيفِ في طاعةِ الهُدَى

    إذا أينعَتْ بالبَغْيِ هامةُ مَن طَغى

    Harvested by the sword's edge in obeying guidance

    When the arrogance of a transgressor became ripe

  28. تُشَبُّ له نارانِ باللّيلِ للقرى

    لكَيْ يُؤْنِسَ السّاري وفي الصُّبْحِ للوغَى

    Fires are kindled for him at night for the villages

    To cheer up the traveler, and in the morning for havoc

  29. إذا ما انتَدى ثمَّ احتَبى بوَقارِهِ

    فلا رَفثٌ فيما يُقالُ ولا لَغا

    When he returns and then hides in his dignity

    There is no nonsense in what is said, nor prattle

  30. تَسوسُ الوَرى يُمنَى يدَيهِ جلالةً

    بإعمالِ أَلْمَى يَلْفِظُ الدُّرَّ أَفشَغا

    The land is governed by the right of his hands, majestically,

    By the actions of hands that shed pearls when clasped

  31. يَمُجُّ على خَدّ البياضِ رُضابَه

    فيَجْلو صباحاً بالظّلامِ مُثَمَّغا

    Light flows down his cheek of brightness

    And so morning shines through the darkness, blurred

  32. ولم أَر في الأملاكِ أَسْرعَ مُنْهَراً

    لسَجْلِ النّدى منه وأَوسَعَ مُفْرَغا

    And I have not seen in kingdoms a source

    For the stream of bounty more copious or broader than him

  33. أخو العزْمِ وَطّاءٌ بأخمَصِ بأْسِه

    لرأْسِ المنايا أو يَعودَ مُثلَّغا

    The brother of determination, steadfast with the sole of his might

    Against the head of death, or he returns stained with blood

  34. قليلٌ إليه جُوُد أسحَمَ أوطَفٍ

    إذا مُثِّلوا أو بأْسُ أَهْرَتَ أَفْدَغا

    To him the generosity of lavish hands is little

    Or the might of a piercing sword when unsheathed

  35. تَجلَّى غداةَ الرَّوعِ والنّقْعُ ثائرٌ

    بناظرتَيْ أَقْنى بمَنْسِرِه شَغا

    He appeared the morning after violence, with anger raging

    With two eyes like an eagle's in its nest

  36. وللحربِ عن أنيابِها الرُّوقِ كَشْرةٌ

    إذا الطّعْنُ أَضحَى للجُنوبِ مُدغْدِغا

    And for war, from its sharp fangs

    When the thrust has become a tickling of the ribs

  37. بكلّ قناةٍ في يدِ الذِّمْرِ صَدْقَةٍ

    تُرَى لصدورِ الخَيلِ في الرَّوْع مِبْزَغا

    In each spear-head in the hands of warriors, a charity

    You see giving drink to the horses' chests in the charge

  38. إذا ظَمئتْ من نَحْرِ طاغٍ إلى دَمٍ

    غدا لاهثاً منه السِّنانُ ليُولَغا

    When they thirst for the blood of an oppressor

    The swords from it become crimson, dripping

  39. أيا جامعاً عفْواً وسيعاً ظِلالُه

    وعَضْباً صَنيعاً مِصْدَعَ الهام مِصْدَغا

    O Gatherer of pardon, vast, whose shade

    Is might, and rage that splits the skull when stirred!

  40. فكم حائدٍ عن طاعةِ الحقِّ حائنٍ

    أُحيطَ به والبَغْيُ صارِعُ مَنْ بَغَى

    How many a straying from obeying truth, deviant,

    Was surrounded while rebellion wrestled the rebellious

  41. غدا فاصِدَ الأَوداجِ منه بسَيْفِه

    وكان دَمُ العصيانِ فيه تَبيَّغا

    The next day it penetrated his flesh with its sword

    While the blood of disobedience in him oozed

  42. وذي هَفْوةٍ قد نَبّه السّعْدُ جَدَّهُ

    وللرّيقِ منه في المُخَنَّقِ سَوَّغا

    I wonder at one with his insight before him

    Yet he refuses to cease his long rebellion, writhing

  43. فأقبلَ يَستَشْفي لِعُرِّ جرائمٍ

    به في ثَرى عُذْرٍ له مُتَمرِّغا

    When his neck draws near the spear point

    He turns away like his name suggests, fleeing

  44. ولم أَر للأحياء أَبعدَ مَطْرَحاً

    وأَشأمَ منْ بَكْرِ الشِّقاقِ إذا رغَا

    Is there any escape for you except to you?

    So by forgiveness, let him attain all he requests

  45. عَجِبْتُ لمُلْقىً بين عينَيْه رُشْدُهُ

    ويَأْبى لطولِ الغَيِّ إلاّ تَملُّغا

    Thus, every enemy, envious frustrator, and

    Troublesome one, you see the earth, their place of wallowing,

  46. إذا ما دنا من ثَعْلَبِ الرُّمْحِ نَحْرُه

    غدا كاسْمِه عن قَصْدِه منه أَرْوَغا

    This one covered in blood, slain

    That one in tears, smeared

  47. وهل منكُمُ إلاّ إليكمْ مَفَرُّه

    فبالعُذْرِ فلْيَبْلُغْ منَ العَفْوِ مَبْلَغا

    Every slanderer ransomed Ibn Ali the exalted

    Showing property as ransom, pure

  48. فلا زال كُلَّ من عَدُوٍ وحاسدٍ

    ومن مَسْفَكٍ منه تُرَى الأرضُ مَرسَغا

    And every envious hater, failing in effort, deficient in mind,

    When you have power in judgment, twisting

  49. خليطَيْنِ هذا بالدّماء مُردَّعاً

    صريعاً وهذا بالدُّموعِ مُردَّغا

    O you whose opinion and banner are exalted in kingdom

    So straighten the world and religion, directing

  50. فَدَى ابْنَ عليٍّ ذا العُلا كُلُّ باخلٍ

    يُريك فِداءَ المالِ عِرْضاً مُمَشَّغا

    The Commander of the Faithful and his Guardian called you

    And he did not call people who evaded helping

  51. وكلُّ حسودٍ ناكِصِ السَّعْيِ ناقِصٍ

    مُعنّىً إذا أَملكْتَ في الرَّأْيِ أَمرَغا

    You two remain like the sun and moon for the people,

    Ideal pair, attainers of each sought thing

  52. أيا مَن عَلا للمُلْك رأياً ورايةً

    فقَوَّم للدّنيا وللدّينِ زيَّغا

    O Minister, seen by those who seek glory

    As reaching even to the stars for the aspirant

  53. دعاكَ أميرُ المؤمنين وَليَّهُ

    ولم يَدْعُ أقواماً عنِ النّصْرِ رُوَّغا

    To you I complain of the days' calamities

    If you wished, from my heart you could draw them out at dawn

  54. فلا زلْتُما كالشّمسِ والبَدْرِ للورَى

    قَرينَيْ عَلاء مُدرِكَيْ كُلِّ مُبْتَغى

    I bid farewell to a shrine that I could not find

    With my grasp, ways to restore it, patching

  55. ألا أَيُّها المَولَى الوزيرُ الّذي يُرَى

    لراجيهِ من عزٍّ إلى النّجْمِ مُبْلِغا

    I was given from the sea of bounties a drop

    While many a drinker was told to find satisfaction, though he was not sated

  56. إليكَ منَ الأيّامِ أشكو روائعاً

    ولو شئْتَ عن قلبي الغداةَ لفَرّغا

    Manner of a time that did not cease its stubbornness

    To one like me, whether it gave or was distracted

  57. قضَيتُ وَداعي كَعبةً لم أَجدْ لها

    بغطْفَيَّ آثارَ التّحلُّلِ سَيِّغا

    I will gather the resolve, hurling

    With the hands of steeds, so the open desert is roamed

  58. وزُوِّدْتُ من بَحْرِ المكارمِ قَطرةً

    وكم شاربٍ قيل احْتَسى وقدِ ارتَغى

    And if I do not find rest, neither for the heart in the chest

    Nor patience, if we go on breaking the heart

  59. سَجيّةُ دَهرٍ لم يزَلْ من عِنادِه

    لمثْلَي إن أَعطَى العطيّةَ أَو شَغا

    Yet I complain of the companion wrongfully

    Though nearness - how little I enjoyed save through you!

  60. سأجمعُ أَشتاتَ العزيمةِ قاذِفاً

    بأيدي المطايا تَلطِمُ البِيدَ دُمَّغا

    I do not complain except of a time whose injustice

    Transformed the balance of my state to disgrace

  61. وإن لم أَجدْ لا القَلْبَ في الصّدْرِ ساكناً

    ولا الصّبْرَ إن سرْنا على القَلْبِ أُفْرِغا

    It changed me as if I am a faulty good

    Cast into the sale of a stutterer

  62. عَلى أَنَّني أَشكو النَوى ظالِماً لَهُ

    وَما القُربُ ما اِستَمتَعتُ إِلّا تَبَلُّغا

    If not for the turns of fate I would not be an hour

    Distracted from serving you with praise composing

  63. ولا أَشتكي إلاّ زماناً بجَوْرهِ

    أَحالَ اعتدالَ الحالِ منّي إلى الصَّغا

    How my mind strove in your praise

    Yet my words were not as eloquent as your deeds

  64. فبَدَّلَني والنّقْصُ فيه كأنّني

    له سِينةٌ أُلقِيتُ في لَفْظِ أَلْثَغا

    The days conveyed you the furthest of wishes

    And fortune crowned you the forelock of desires

  65. فلولا صُروفُ الدّهرِ لم أكُ ساعةً

    لعُلياكَ من شُغْلي بمَدْحٍ لأفْرُغا

    You lived a lifetime without end in sight

    Though the circle tells only a part

  66. وكم قد تَعنَّى في مَديحِك خاطري

    فما كان قَولي من فِعالِك أَبلَغا

    I used to allot hopes in you

    While from you excellence of good persists in hopes

  67. فبلّغَك الأيّامُ قاصيةَ المُنَى

    ومَلَّكك الإقبالُ ناصيةَ البِغى

    I attained what I hoped in you, and now

    It is time I am made an attainer of what I hope in you

  68. وعُمِّرْتَ عُمْراً لا يُرَى طَرَفٌ له

    ولكنّما يَحْكي لك الطّوْقَ مُفْرَغا

    You were my wish and the surplus of good does not cease to be sought

    I attained my hopes in you, and now is time

  69. لقد كنتُ للآمالِ فيكَ مُقسِّماً

    ومنك وفَضْلُ الخَيرِ ما زالَ يُبتَغى

    That I attain what I hope for in you

  70. وبُلِّغْتُ ما أَمّلْتُ فيكَ وآنَ أنْ

    أكونَ لِما أَمّلتُ فيك مُبَلَّغا
