1. أُسائِلُ عنها الرَّكْبَ وهْيَ معَ الرَّكْبِ

    وأطلُبُها من ناظرِي وهي فيي القلبِ

    I ask the caravan about her while she is with the caravan

    And I seek her from my onlookers while she is in my heart

  2. وما عادةُ الأيّام إن رُحْتُ عاتباً

    عليهنّ أن يُهدِينَ عُتْبَي إلى عَتْبي

    It is not the way of days when I complain to them

    That they direct my reproach to my reproach

  3. تَعلّق بينَ الهَجْرِ والوَصْلِ مُهْجَتي

    فلا أَرَبى في الحُبِّ أقضِي ولا نَحْبي

    My love is suspended between estrangement and union

    So I achieve neither in love nor do I rest

  4. وما غَرَّني داعي الهوى غيرَ أنّني

    نظَرْتُ فأصباني بعَينَيْه مَنْ يُصْبي

    Nothing enticed me to the call of passion except that

    I looked, and the one who pines struck me with his eyes

  5. أَحِنُّ إلى طَيْفِ الأحبّةِ سارياً

    ودونَ سُراهُ نَبْوةُ الجَفْنِ والجَنْب

    I yearn for the phantom of the loved ones passing by

    While revelation of the eyelid and side are their images

  6. فما للنّوى لا يَعْتري غيرَ مُغْرَمٍ

    كأنّ النّوى صَبٌ منَ النّاسِ بالصَبَ

    So what ails the resolution if none but the enamored feels it

    As if resolution is a torrent flooding people away

  7. إذا ما تَصافيْنا سعَى الدّهْرُ بيننا

    وصارَ التَلاقي دون مُمتنعٍ صَعْب

    When we reconciled, time worked against us

    And meeting became impossible, arduous

  8. فللهِ رَبْعٌ من أُميمةَ عاطِلٌ

    تُوشّحُه الأنداءُ باللُؤلُؤ الرّطْب

    By God, a quarter of Umm Umaymah lies barren

    Adorned by the winds with moist pearls

  9. جعلتُ به قَيدَ الركائب وَقفةً

    إذا شاء رَبْعُ الحَيّ طالتْ على صحْبي

    I made it a halt for the riding camels

    If the tribe desires, it lingers long with my friends

  10. رَمْيتُ مُحَيّا دارِهم عن صَبابةٍ

    بسافِحةِ الإنسانِ سافحةِ الغَرْب

    I shot its dwellings from afar out of longing

    With the plains of mankind, plains of the west

  11. أُروِى بها خَدّي وفي القلبِ غُلَّتي

    وقد يَتخطَّى الغيثُ أمكنةَ الجَدْب

    I quench my cheek with it, though anguish fills my heart

    Sometimes rain transcends the places of drought

  12. ويا صاح أسعِدْني بجرْعاء مالكٍ

    وإن نَزَلتْ سَمْراءُ في الحيّ من كعْب

    And oh friend, make me happy with a drink of Malik

    Even if it is poured in the tribe from a leather bucket

  13. وسِرْ نتعلَلْ بالحديثِ عنِ الهَوى

    ونُسنِدْ إلى أحبابِنا أَثَرَ الحُبّ

    And walk slowly, complaining of passion

    And lean on our loved ones, the vestiges of love

  14. ولا تتَعَجبْ أنني عشْتُ بعدَهم

    فإنّهم روحي وقد سكنوا قلبي

    Be not amazed that I lived after they left

    For they are my soul and they have settled in my heart

  15. وخَرْقٍ خَرَقْنَ العِيسُ بالوفدِ عُرضَه

    وألفَيْنَ نجداً عن مناكِبها النُّكْب

    With rents Al-'Is tore its mantle

    And two thousand, Najd turned away from its mounts

  16. ونحن بسفْحِ القارتَيْنِ عن الحِمَى

    جُنوحٌ نَلُفُّ البيدَ شُهْباً على شُهْب

    While we are at the foot of the two eminences, protecting

    Flames, wrapping light upon light

  17. على كُلِّ مَسبوقٍ به الطَّرفُ ضامرٍ

    كأنّ مَجالَ النِّسْعِ منه على جَأب

    To each one whose sight is fading

    As if the places of activity have shunned him

  18. وحَرْفٍ تَجوبُ القاعَ والوهدَ والرُّبا

    كحَرْفٍ مُديم الرَّفْعِ والجَّرِ والنَّصْب

    Letters roam the plains, valleys and dunes

    Like letters with consistent declension

  19. نجائبُ يَقدحنَ الحصَى كُلَّ ليلةٍ

    كأنّ بأيديها مَصابيحَ للرّكْب

    She-camels strike the pebbles every night

    As if their hands hold lanterns for the caravan

  20. كأنّ نُجومَ اللّيلِ مَدّ طريقنا

    تُرامِي بها أيدِي الغُرَيرِيّةِ الصُّهْب

    As if the stars of night stretched our path

    Reaching with them the hands of Ghurayyir, gray-haired

  21. كأنّ شهابَ الدّينِ لما سَرتْ بنا

    إليه المطايا تُبدِلُ البُعْدَ بالقُرب

    As if the meteors of religion, when we traveled by them

    To it the steeds change remoteness into nearness

  22. تَهاوَتْ صِغارُ الشُّبِ تَهْدِي

    شَطْرَ الكبيرِ من الشُّهب

    The young flames bow down

    Bearing the great portion of the meteors

  23. إذا ما شهابَ الدّينِ زارتْ رِكابُنا

    فَقُلْ في سُرَى الصّادي إلى المنهلِ العذب

    When the meteors of religion visit our mounts

    Then say, in the joyous journey, to the fresh sweet waters

  24. إلى مَلِكٍ نَدْبٍ جزيلٍ نَوالهُ

    وهل يَقْصِدُ الرّاجي سوى ملكٍ ندب

    To a king generous, abundant his bounty

    Does the hopeful seek other than a generous king?

  25. نَمومٍ على جَزْلِ العَطيةِ بِشرُهُ

    ويُعرِبُ أُثْرُ السّيفِ عن جودةِ الضّرب

    Swift to bestow abundant gifts, his mark

    And the trace of the sword expresses the perfection of striking

  26. أمَرّ على صَرْفِ الزمانِ مَريرَهُ

    ويُعرِبُ أُثْرُ السّيفِ عن جودةِ الضّرب

    He makes the bitter taste of time pass

    And the trace of the sword expresses the perfection of striking

  27. عَواقبُ ما يأتي مَواقِعُ طَرفْهِ

    فآثارُهُ أبقَى بقاءً من القُضْب

    The consequences of what his glance brings about

    Its traces more lasting than rod and staff

  28. هو ابنُ رئيسِ الدّين والمُقتدَى به

    بوَضْعِ هناءِ المُلْكِ في مَوضِعِ النُّقب

    He is the son of the leader of religion and exemplar

    Placing the ease of sovereignty in the place of burdens

  29. يَسوسُ الرّعايا بالمنايا وبالمُنَى

    ويَغْزو الأعادي بالكتائبِ والكُتب

    He rules the subjects with death and demise

    And invades the enemies with regiments and books

  30. فما مِن أبٍ وابْنٍ شَبيهُهما عُلاً

    رأى النّاسُ في سِلْمٍ من الدّهرِ أو حَرب

    No father and son are more eminent, exalted

    Than these two, whether people are in peace or war

  31. هما عُذْرُ هذا الدّهرِ عن كلِ فارِطٍ

    ولولاهُما ما كانَ مُغتفَرَ الذّنب

    They excuse this world for every delinquent

    Without them, sins would not be forgiven

  32. فَدُوما معاً في المُلْكِ ما هَبَّ ساجِعاً

    على مَنبرِ الأيكِ الخَطيبُ من الخُطب

    So may they always together rule the kingdom, not declining

    While the preacher declaims sermons from the pulpit

  33. فهذا زمانٌ أنتُما خَيْرُ أهلِه

    وأشرارهُ إنْ عُدَّ تُربي على التُّرب

    This is an era whose best people are you

    And its worst, if counted, are dust to dust
