1. قسَماً منّي بأيام الصَّفاء

    وبجَمْع الدّهرِ شَمْلَ القُرناءِ

    I swear by the days of serenity,

    By all of time bringing the closeness of friends,

  2. وبتأميلِيَ منهم عودةً

    لا أطعْتُ الشّوقَ في طُولِ البكاء

    By my longing for their return,

    If I obeyed longing during the long crying -

  3. إنمّا أَذْخرُ عيْني لغَدٍ

    إنْ قَضى اللهُ بوَشْك الالتقاء

    I only reserve my eye for tomorrow,

    If Allah wills, the nearing of reunion.

  4. ليسَ يشفى غيرُ عيني عِلَلي

    إنْ تدانى الحَيُّ من بعدِ التّنائي

    None but my eye would heal my ailment,

    If the loved one draws near after separation.

  5. خَلِّها تَثْنِ إليهم نّظْرةً

    ثمّ هَبْها عندهم للبُشَراء

    Let it glance at them, then bestow it on them for good news,

    If they could be ransomed for my life one day of union, its price would not be too high.

  6. لو يُفادّون بعُمْري منهمُ

    يومَ وصلٍ لم يكنْ غالِي الفداء

    Pure ones who troubled my life, vowing -

    How can life be clear without the pure ones?

  7. أصفياءٌ كَدَّروا عيَشْي نوى

    كيف يصْفو العيشُ دونَ الأصفياء

    How much I endured, yet I have no endurance,

    I pretended, yet my pride was frail,

  8. كم تجلَّدْتُ وما بي جَلَدٌ

    وتصنّعْتُ وقد عَزَّ عزائي

    Denying my passion out of caution

    When the spying eyes glance at me,

  9. جاحِداً وَجْدي بهم من حَذَرٍ

    حين تَرميني عيونُ الرُّقَباء

    And if a teardrop preceded me before them

    I veiled my face with my cloak,

  10. وإذا ما سَبقتْني عَبرةٌ

    عندهم غطَّيتُ وجْهي برِدائي

    And if despair lifted my heart, I said to it:

    "Pretend with hope!"

  11. وإذا اليأسُ أَعَلَّ القلبَ لي

    قلتُ للقلبِ تَعَلّلْ بالرّجاء

    So Allah turned the injustice of the vow

    With the house being near after estrangement,

  12. فأدالَ اللهُ من جَورِ النَّوى

    بدُنُوِّ الدّارِ بعد العدواء

    And the situation ended so that they visited -

    So we greeted with the coldness of estrangement.

  13. وانتَهى الحالُ إلى أن واصَلوا

    فتَواهَبْنا بِداياتِ الجفَاء

    From their kindness poured valleys -

    It carried all coldness like barren land.

  14. سال من عَطْفِهمُ أوديةٌ

    حَملَتْ كُلَّ جَفاءٍ كالجُفاء

    I won't forget the day they became my neighbors,

    My solitude, mingling with my peers,

  15. لستُ أنسى يومَ بانوا جيرتي

    ووُقوفي واجِماً في خُلَطائي

    My asking every group about them,

    About them, while traveling and staying,

  16. وسؤالي كُلَّ رَكبٍ عَنَّ لي

    عنهمُ عند رَواحٍ واْغتداء

    My waiting for an apparition of them

    Deceiving between my morn and eve,

  17. وانتِظاري لخيالٍ منهمُ

    زَورةً بين صباحي ومسائي

    My sleepless vigilance at night

    With wonders and star gazing as my companions.

  18. ومَبيتي ساهراً مُرتفِقاً

    بالفلا والنِّضْو مَعقولٌ إزائي

    The stars of night shine among them

    Like the crescent moon to us, excelling in light -

  19. ونجومُ اللَّيلِ يَجْلو بينها

    غُرةَ البدرِ لنا فَضْلُ الضياء

    Like the Banu Hashim in valor, when

    They encircled the chief of chiefs.

  20. كبني هاشمٍ الغُرِّ وقد

    أحدقُوا حول نقيبِ النُّقَباء

    The full moon of generosity appeared

    In eminence, if not a moon of the sky.

  21. وبدا بدْرَ سماحٍ كاملٍ

    بالعُلا إن لم يكنْ بَدْرَ سَماء

    Who saw the day he was revealed and people

    Craning their necks for glimpse -

  22. مَن رأى يوم تَجَّلى والورى

    ناِصبُو أَعناقهم للاجتلاء

    Wearing a garment woven

    From the pupils of saints' eyes,

  23. وعليه حُلّةٌ مَنسوجةٌ

    من أَناسِيِّ عيونِ الأولياء

    Above a gaze stealing every great one's

    Dignity and pride.

  24. فوقَ طِرْفٍ يَسْرِقُ الطَّرفُ له

    عزّةً كُلَّ عظيمِ الكِبْرياء

    Turning away in anger, debating his opinion

    If he disputed in audacious speech,

  25. مُرْتَدٍ عَضْباً يُحاكِي رأْيَه

    إن نضاهُ عند خَطْبٍ في المَضاء

    And from Allah a reverence upon him

    In people's eyes grayed with splendor.

  26. ومن اللهِ عليه هَيبةٌ

    في عيونِ النّاسِ شِيبَتْ ببهاء

    The young men were divided in shock

    Where people clamored in supplication -

  27. والفتى من دَهَشٍ مُقْتَسَمٌ

    حيث للخلْق ضجيجٌ بالدُّعاء

    A hand gesturing, a joyous heart,

    A mouth supplicating, and a glancing eye,

  28. فيدٌ تُومي وقلبٌ فرِحُ

    وفمٌ داعٍ وَطرْفٌ منه راء

    They saw the raincloud and lion together,

    Without rivalry between sun and moon,

  29. يُبصِرون الغيثَ واللّيثَ معاً

    والحَيا والشّمسَ من غيرِ امتراء

    And greeted a noble spirit -

    Its gift to the delegation the essence of generosity.

  30. ويُحَيّون هُماماً ماجداً

    بِشْرُه للوَفْدِ عُنوانُ السَّخاء

    He surpassed the fathers in the field of supremacy

    If you fear him, he is hard to deter.

  31. سابَقَ الآباءَ في شوْطِ العُلا

    فهْو إن خاشَنْتَه صَعْبُ الإباء

    He divided people's hearts between

    Fear of him and hope in him.

  32. قَسَّمَتْ أفئدةَ النّاسِ له

    راحتاهُ بين خوفٍ وارْتجاء

    A Hashimite who tied his affection

    To the House of his Lord of noble building,

  33. هاشِمي عاقد حبوتَه

    في ذُرا بيتٍ رَبوبِيِّ البِناء

    Revelation descends upon its inhabitants

    For they are Allah's chosen elite,

  34. يهبطُ الوحْيُ على سُكّانِه

    فهمُ للهِ أهلُ الاصطفاء

    With the guided trustees it is adorned

    And the mighty kings at its borders.

  35. بالهُداةِ الأُمناء انتظمَتْ

    حافَتاهُ والملوكِ العُظماء

    What precedence they took to supremacy!

    What footsteps pursued them in their footsteps!

  36. أيَّ سبْقٍ سبقُوا نحو العُلا

    واقتفى آثارَهم أيَّ اقتفاء

    A king who in the morning his power is feared

    In the evening hoped for, destined for glory,

  37. ملِكٌ أصبح مَحذورَ السُّطا

    مُرتجَى النّائلِ مأهولَ الفِناء

    A palm tree grew from its branch

    A fertile line of caliphs.

  38. قد نَمتْه دَوحة من فَرْعها

    شُعبةٌ مُثمِرةٌ بالخُلفَاء

    From his father the scholar he resembles

    In eloquence, leniency, and wisdom,

  39. من أبيهِ الحَبْرِ فيه شَبَهٌ

    في بيانٍ وسَماح ودَهاء

    He places things in their proper places

    As you adorned achievement with success.

  40. يَضَعُ الأشياء في مَوضِعها

    مِثْلما باشَرْتَ نُقباً بِهناء

    The miracle of his religion is his eloquent speech

    From which springs of gift-giving flow to us.

  41. شارعُ ديِنَ ندىً إعجازُهُ

    أنمُلٌ تَنبَعُ فينا بالعَطاء

    Some of those who kept coming to him are bedouin

    While others are discreet.

  42. ذوُ بُدُو بعضُ أسابِ الّذي

    ظَلّ يأتيهِ وبعض ذو خَفاء

    He's not questioned about his actions -

    But it's upon people to follow his example well.

  43. ليس بالمسؤولِ عن أفعاله

    بل على الأقوامِ حُسْنُ الاقتداء

    He does not strip himself of the robes of supremacy

    In leaning or straightening.

  44. ليس يَعْرى من جلابيبِ العُلا

    عند مَيْلٍ منه أو عنْدَ استواء

    The star in its orbit, however it turns

    Is companion to the sublime.

  45. وكذاك النّجمُ في أفلاكه

    كيفما دار قَرينٌ للعلاء

    A kaaba of glory, every day facing it

    Is each settled or tent dweller of earth.

  46. كعبةٌ للمجدِ يُومي نحوَها

    كُلُّ مَن في الأرضِ من دانٍ وناء

    If you visit him you'll see a hand like a snake

    When confronted, and a face of modesty,

  47. إنْ تَزُرْهُ تَر كفّاً كالحَيا

    حين يُمتاحُ ووجْهاً ذا حَياء

    He is like the towering mountain in stillness

    And like the raincloud pouring forth generosity.

  48. هو كالطَّودِ وقاراً في الحُبا

    وهْو كالجَودِ بِداراً بالحِباء

    The starts fall short of his views

    If estimated for life span or eminence.

  49. تَقْصُرُ الأنجُمُ عن آرائه

    إن حكَتْها في سناً أو في سَناء

    With that sublime glance he surpassed

    All gazes in the horizons.

  50. وبذاك النّطَرِ السّامي له

    فاق في الآفاقِ كُلَّ النّظراء

    And the Commander of the Faithful singled him out

    From the sons of time in proximity and choice.

  51. وأميرُ المؤمنين اختَصَّه

    من بنى الدّهرِ بقُرْبٍ واجتِباء

    The advisor praises whoever it is, but not

    Like the praise of the lineage nobles.

  52. يحَمد النّاصحُ مَن كان ولا

    مثْلَ حَمْدِ النصَحاء النُّسَباء

    One craving did not attain what he wished

    Entering amid restoration and decline.

  53. لم يَنَلْ ما قد تَمنّى كاشحٌ

    داخلٌ ما بين عُودٍ ولِحاء

    When loved ones were content with union

    The slanderers were discarded in the wild.

  54. وإذا الأحبابُ بالوَصْلِ اكتَفَوا

    نُبِذ الواشون نَبْذاً بالعَراء

    If you ask me about my time and I

    Am of experience for its children and test -

  55. إن تَسلْني عن زماني وأنا

    ذو اخْتبارٍ لبنيهِ وابتلاء

    For you O Amr al-Ala Ali is the apex

    Of your noble fathers' sea.

  56. فَعليٌّ لك يا عَمْرو العُلا

    منتهَى بحرِ بنيك النُّجباء

    It did not walk the path of poets.

    It senses time and creatively judges

  57. هاكَها من رائق الشِّعرِ وإن

    لم يكَدْ يَسلُكُ نهْجَ الشعَراء

    What poetry has no precedent in decreeing.

    Its praise of a people whose praise

  58. يَشعَرُ الدّهْرَ ويَقْضي مُبدعاً

    ما لشعرٍ منه قدْحٌ في قَضاء

    Is sheer truth without any fabrication.

    Through you, O Abbasids, some turns of fate are seen

  59. مَدْحُه الدّهْرَ لقومٍ مَدْحُهم

    مَحْضُ صدقٍ لم يِشِنْهُ بافْتراء

    For as long as I've lived taking shelter in you

    I've never ceased to intercede through you swiftly

  60. بكُمُ يا آل عبّاسٍ يُرى

    من صُروفِ الدّهر ما عشتُ احتمائي

    With my poetry's transmission out of loyalty

    If you spread out, it's out of gratitude to you

  61. لم أزَلْ أشْفعُ فيكم طارِفاً

    من مَديحي بتليدٍ من وَلائي

    Or if you folded, it's over affection's concealment

    And when praise flowed into an army

  62. إنْ نشَرْتُم فعَنِ الشُّكرِ لكُم

    أو طَويتُم فعلَى الوُدّ انطوائي

    I am its standard bearer

    With a poem, whenever I inked it

  63. وإذا المَدْحُ سَرى في جَحْفلٍ

    فأنا الحاملُ فيهِ للّواء

    It shook the edges of the generous kings

    I said, and the caravan with empty saddles

  64. بقَريضٍ كلّما حَبرتُه

    هزّ أعطافَ المُلوكِ الكُرَماء

    Their livelihood slippered with soft treading,

    They rose early while dawn was in the folds of night

  65. قلتُ والرّكْبُ بأجوازِ الفَلا

    عيسُهمُ مُنتعلاتٌ بالنَّجاء

    The face of a beautiful lady cheerful in her veil,

    The barefoot vanguards driving away fatigue

  66. بَكّروا والصُّبْحُ في طَيِّ الدُّجَى

    وجْهُ حسناءَ حَييٌ في خباء

    And stirring the steeds with prodding,

    Whenever they galloped the wasteland

  67. وحُداةُ العيسِ يَنفون الكَرى

    ويُطيرون المَطايا بالحُداء

    Gifted them a downpour like a flood,

    And if one donned a gown and mantle

  68. كُلُّ وجناءَ إذا ما طَرِبوا

    عَطّتِ البيدَ بهم عَطَّ المُلاء

    Her shadow became like shoes for her.

    Satisfaction, O guide of the caravan, satisfaction!

  69. وإذا ما ادّرعَتْ هاجِرةً

    جُعِلَ الظِّلُّ لها مثْلَ الحذاء

    For satisfaction from people is my goal.

    He is the most generous of people in gifts

  70. الرِّضَا يا حاديَ العيسِ الرِّضا

    فَلَقَصْديهِ من النّاس ارتضائي

    Through him from people I gain independence,

    But the proud one has a soul that grew

  71. هو أكفَى الخَلْقِ للوفْدِ ندىً

    وبه أيضاً عنِ الخَلْقِ اكتفائي

    In ancestral honor and great fathers -

    A presence of yours adorned its neck

  72. بل لذي الفَخْريْنِ نفسٌ كبُرتْ

    منه عِزّاً في جُدودٍ كُبَراء

    With a system securely winding,

    And it rose in rank to where

  73. حَضْرةٌ منك تَحَلَّى جِيدُها

    بنظامٍ هو مأْمون الوَهاء

    No merit remains for rising.

    If your pride reaches its imagined end

  74. وارتقَتْ في دَرَجِ العِزّ إلى

    حيثُ لا يُوجدُ فَضْلٌ لارتقاء

    Then may your life last without end.

    Live an exemplar for the seekers of greatness

  75. إن يكن فَخْرُكَ في الوهْم انتَهى

    فلْيَطُلْ عُمْرُك من غير انتهاء

    Through you they show guidance and guidance-following.

    This is a state of glory and supremacy

  76. عِشْ لطُلاب المعالي قُدوةً

    بك يُبدون اقتداءً لاهتداء

    That gathered the elite through generosity,

    Its standards became supported

  77. هذه دولةُ مَجْدٍ وعُلاً

    جَمعتْ بالجودِ شَمْلَ الفُضَلاء

    When cared for by your eye of concern,

    And through you it became needless

  78. أصْبَحَتْ مَنصورةً راياتُها

    إذْ رَعتْها منك عَيْنُ الاعتناء

    Never needing anything but self-sufficiency,

    So remain its strong right hand forever

  79. وبك استغنَتْ فلم تُبقِ لها

    حاجةً يوماً إلى غيرِ اكتفاء

    Supporting its victory with complete aid.

    O right hand! If all of existence called

  80. فلها فابْقَ يَميناً أبَداً

    مُغْنياً في نَصْرِها كُلَّ الغناء

    With left hands, they would lack loyalty.

    Your generosity never ceases to make you beautiful to us

  81. يا يميناً لو دعتْ كُل الورى

    بشِمالٍ لغَدوا دونَ الوفاء

    In a bracelet forged from excellent praise.

  82. لا يَزلْ جوُدك يَجلوك لنا

    في سوارٍ صيغَ من حُسْنِ الثّناء
