1. يا مَن رأَى ظُعُنَ الحَيِّ الّذي شَحَطا

    كأنّها بينَ أحناء الضُّلوعِ قَطا

    O you who saw the scars of the alive one who was tortured

    As if they were between the ribs, cuts

  2. شَرقيّةٌ غربَتْ دارُ الجميعِ بها

    وفَرّقَتْ في البلادِ الجِيرةَ الخُلطَا

    An easterner who became a stranger in the abode of all

    And separated the neighbors in the countries, confused

  3. تَأْتي طِلاعَ الفَلا من كلِّ ناجيةٍ

    عَنْسٍ إذا صَعِد الحادي بها هَبطا

    The dawn stars rise from every coquettish woman

    If the guide ascends with her, he descends

  4. عزيزةٌ تَمنعُ الأبطالَ جانبَها

    وتَنهضُ الخيلُ من قُدَّامِها فَرَطا

    A dear one who prevents the heroes from her side

    And the horses leap ahead of her, scattered

  5. جُرْدٌ تَمُرُّ فُويْقَ الأرضِ طائرةً

    حتّى كأنّ قَطاها في الحِضارِ قَطا

    A mare passing through the expanse of the land, flying

    As if her trotting in civilizations is trotting

  6. إذا دَجا ليلُ نَقْعٍ من سَنابِكها

    أطارَ قَرْعُ الحَصى في فَرْعِه شَمَطا

    When the night of soft sand settles from its windows

    The beating of pebbles flies in its branches

  7. إنّ المَطيَّ الّذي هاجَ الحُداةُ له

    وَجْداً يَهُزُّ على أثباجِه الغُبُطا

    That the gifted were aroused for

    Enthusiasm that shakes over its ligaments, happiness

  8. لم يَخْطُ من عزّةٍ إلاّ على كَبِدٍ

    ولم يُثِرْ منه غيرَ الدَّمْعِ حين خَطا

    It did not step from glory except on a liver

    And did not provoke anything but tears when it stepped

  9. من كلِّ أدماءَ أغشَوا تحتها نَمَطاً

    من الحرير وعالَوا فوقها نَمَطا

    From all the bodies they covered a pattern under them

    Of silk and raised over them a pattern

  10. وفَرَّجوا سُجْفَها عن عارضَيْ قَمَرٍ

    يَسْرِى على نُورِه باللّيلِ مَن خَبَطا

    And they uncovered its neck from the cheeks of a moon

    Flowing in its light at night, whoever groped

  11. دَعُوا الظُّبَى حَشْوَ أجفان الحُماةِ له

    كَفَى بما هو من أجفانِه اخْتَرطا

    Leave the antelope to fill the eyelids of the protectors for it

    It is enough what it is from its eyelids, scratched

  12. تَمْرِي ظُباءُ من الآماقِ مُنْسَفكاً

    ما لم يَسِلْه من الأعناقِ مُعتَبِطا

    Antelope passes from the depths disjointed

    What did not hang from the necks, knotted

  13. أُذْرِي الدّموعَ ويَلْحَى اللاّئمون معاً

    على الزّمانِ الّذي قد فَرَّق الخُلَطا

    I shed tears and the blamers together

    On the time that has separated the commingled

  14. لُوموا على ذاك أو كُفّوا لشأْنِكم

    بَرْحُ الفِراقِ على بَرْحِ المَلامِ غِطا

    Blame that or stop for your own affairs

    The agony of separation is easier than the agony of blame

  15. عَتْبي على القَدَرِ الجاري وأَيُّ فتىً

    يُعدَى على حَكَمِ الأقدارِ إن قَسَطا

    My resentment is on the fate that runs and which bloke

    Would be wronged by the judgment of destinies if he was fair

  16. فليتَ شِعْري بأيِّ الأمرِ من زَمني

    أُصيبُ من عُقدَةِ الأحزانِ مُنتَشَطا

    So I wonder by which matter of my time

    I am afflicted by the knot of sorrows, combed

  17. وما مَلكْتُ المُنَى والدَّهرُ فيه رضاً

    فكيف أملِكُها منه وقد سَخِطا

    And I do not own destiny and time is pleased in it

    So how can I own it and it became angry

  18. لَقِيتُ مِمّا يُشيبُ الرأسَ أَعظَمَهُ

    لو أنّ شَيباً إذا استوحَيْتَه وَخَطا

    I faced from what makes the head gray, its greatest

    If gray hair, when you incur it, steps

  19. وقد نَسِيتُ وما أنسَى بحادثةٍ

    عَيشاً تَلقّيتُ في رَيعانِه غِبَطا

    And I forgot and did not forget an incident

    A life I met in its prime, rejoiced

  20. أَبِيتُ منه على ذِكْرٍ يُؤرِّقُني

    شَوقاً إلى سالفِ العَهدِ الّذي فَرَطا

    I stay up at night remembering it, disturbing me

    Yearning for the bygone days that missed

  21. في ليلةٍ كُلُّ جُزْءٍ مِن غَياهبِها

    من طولِها لَيلةٌ لو قُسِّمَتْ نُقَط

    In a night, every part of its darkness

    From its length, a night if divided, drops

  22. فدامَ للمُلْكِ مَجْدُ المُلْكِ عُدَّتَه

    من اللّيالي قَريرَ العينِ مُغْتَبِطا

    So the glory of the kingdom lasted, its equipoise

    From the nights pleasing the eye, delighted

  23. دامَ الهُمامُ الّذي يَهْمِي ندىً وردىً

    إذا أَجدّ رِضاً في النّاسِ أو سُخُطا

    Lasted the enthusiasm that excites dew and flowers

    When the people are pleased or angry

  24. السّيفَ عَضْباً إذا ما هَبوةٌ ذُكِرَتْ

    والغَيثَ سكْباً إذا ما جانبٌ قَحَطا

    The sword, fury when a surge is mentioned

    And rain, pouring when a side is arid

  25. والسَّيْلَ عَزْماً إذا ما الخَطْبُ بادَهُه

    والطَّودَ حِلماً إذا ما الجاهلُ اخْتلَطا

    And the flood, resolve when the ordeal overwhelms it

    And the mountain, forbearance when the ignorant mingled

  26. لمّا رأى أنّ أعمالَ الورَى رُتَبٌ

    يَظَلُّ يَختَطُّ منها أهلُها خِطَطا

    When he saw that the works of people are arranged

    Under which its people roam, puzzled

  27. تَوسَّط المُلْكُ في أَسنَى مَراتبِه

    وكان من حَقِّ دُرِّ العِقْدِ أن يَسِطا

    The kingdom took the finest of its positions

    And it was the right of the jewel's core to spread

  28. لم يَعتَمِدْ في العُلا من أَمرِها طَرَفاً

    ولم يقَعْ رأْيُه في نَقْدِها غَلَطا

    He did not depend on the elevation of its matter partially

    And his opinion regarding its critique did not err

  29. لو لم يكُنْ وسَطُ الأشياءِ أَشْرَفَها

    ما اختارَتِ الشّمْسُ من أفلاكها الوَسَطا

    If the middle of things was not the noblest of them

    The sun would not have chosen the center from its orbits

  30. زاد الممالِكَ باسْتِعْلائِه شَرَفاً

    وَفّى البريّةَ للرّاجي بما شَرَطا

    He increased the kingdoms by his ascendance, honor

    And fulfilled the request of the desirer, stipulated

  31. لو عَدَّ في أَقصَرِ الألحاظِ مُمتَحَناً

    ما يَحسُبُ النّاسُ طولَ الدَّهْرِ ما غَلِطا

    If he counted in the shortest of glances, examined

    The people would not reckon the length of time erred

  32. هذا على أنّه لو رامَ في سنةٍ

    حسابَ ما جادَ في يومٍ لمّا ضَبَطا

    This is while if he wanted in a year

    To account for what he gave in a day, he would not have encompassed

  33. تلك اليمينُ الّتي ما هَزَّ أنمُلَها

    إلا وفي يَدِ شاني مَجْدِه سُقِطا

    That right hand that did not shake unless

    In the hand of one who lost his glory, fell

  34. غَدا بها مالُه المَوفُور مُبتَذَلاً

    وراح مالُهُمُ المَوهوبُ مُنضَبِطا

    Tomorrow, his abundant wealth became neglected

    While their granted wealth remained organized

  35. للهِ أروعُ يأْبَى رأْيُه أبداً

    جَعْدَ المساعي ويَرضَى العُلا سَبِطا

    To God belongs the most wondrous opinion that never accepts

    The curling of efforts and is pleased with elevated, noble

  36. لا يَمْهِلُ الدّاءَ إلا ريْثَ يَحسِمُه

    والحزْمُ في نَزْعِ نابِ الشرِّ حين سَطا

    He does not delay the disease except for a moment to eradicate it

    And determination in extracting the fang of evil when it crawled

  37. ولا يَغَرُّ بوُدٍّ تحته ضَمَدٌ

    كم زَهرةٍ قَتلَتْ مرعىً بها حَبَطا

    He is not tempted by affection under which is a bandage

    How many flowers killed a meadow by it, ruined

  38. يا ابنَ الأعزِّينَ من رَيْبِ الزّمانِ حِمىً

    والأكثرِينَ على حَدِّ العَدُوِّ سُطا

    O son of the most honored of the people from the doubt of time, protected

    And the most generous toward the enemy’s border, extensive

  39. والأَطْولينَ إلى فَرْعِ العلاء يَداً

    والأبعدِينَ إلى شَأْوِ الكرامِ خُطا

    And the longest of hand toward the branch of supremacy

    And the farthest of step toward the status of dignitaries, stepped

  40. أنت الّذي لم يُغادِرْ فَضْلَ مَرتبة

    إلا وعاطاهُ أَغلَى مَأْخذاً فعَطا

    You are the one who did not neglect the superiority of any position

    Except and gave it the most expensive uptake, so he gave

  41. فوقَ الوِزارةِ لو فكّرتَ مَنزلةً

    وإن بكَى الحاسدُ المَفْؤودُ أو نَحَطا

    Above the ministry, if you thought of a position

    And if the jealous deprived one cried or fell

  42. من أصبحَتْ وزراءُ العَصرِ عن يَدِه

    مَن شاء أدنَى ومَن لم يَرضَه شَحَطا

    From whom the ministers of the time became by his hand

    Whoever he wished was lowered and whoever did not satisfy him was degraded

  43. فَلْيشكُرِ المُلْكُ ما أولَيتَ من منَنٍ

    ولن يُصيبَ مَزيدَ البِرِّ مَن غَمَطا

    So let the kingdom thank what you did of favors

    And the increase of good will not be deprived by whoever blamed

  44. لولاكَ كانَ أصابَ العظْمَ كاسِرُهُ

    ولاقَتِ الشّحمةُ البيضاءُ مُشتَرَطا

    Without you, the bone would have been broken by its breaker

    And the white fat would have met, demanded

  45. فَللْتَ عنه شَبا خَطْبٍ رأيتَ بِها

    أديمَهُ عن مَدامِي نَحرِه كُشِطا

    So you deflected from it young ordeals you saw

    Its skin from the veins of its throat stripped

  46. أيّامَ لا حِسَّ من خَيلٍ ولا خَوَلٍ

    تَمُدُّ هذي الصُّفوفُ الغُلْبَ والسُّمُطا

    Days in which there is no sense of horses or horsemen

    These lines extend victory and high spirits

  47. فقد أفاض عليه اليومَ رَونَقَهُ

    وراشَ نُصحُكَ منه نَبلَهُ المُرُطا

    For he adorned it today with its grace

    And your advice perfumed its elegance and nobility

  48. وقَدَّمَتْ عُصَبُ العافِينَ عن ثِقةٍ

    وَفْدَ الأماني إلى وِرْدِ النّدَى فَرَطا

    And the clan of the healthy presented confidently

    A delegation of wishes to the roses of dew, scattered

  49. وراحَ كُلُّ فتىً ألقَى عَصاهُ وقد

    أصابَ من وَرَقِ الدُّنيا به خَبَطا

    And every bloke threw away his stick and

    Struck the leaves of the world with it, puzzled

  50. إليكَ أَعملْتُها في كُلِّ غامضةٍ

    ألقَى الظّلام بها بَرْكاً وَمَدَّمَطا

    To you I directed it in every ambiguous

    The darkness threw in it pools and darkness

  51. مُصطفّةً كالمَدارِي في سَوادِ دُجىً

    يَبِتْنَ يَفْرُقْنَ منه لِمّةً قَطَطا

    Chosen like pearls in the darkness of night

    Remaining, dispersing from it groups, felines

  52. منَ اللّواتي يَزيدُ السّيرُ أَيديَها

    سَبْقاً إذا الفَضْلُ من أَنساعِها مَعَطا

    Of those whom the travel increases their hands

    Precedence when supremacy from its kinds is given

  53. بسَطْتُ ما قد تَطوَّى من أَزِمَّتِها

    حتّى طوَيْتُ بها القاعَ الّذي انْبَسَطا

    I extended what was folded of its crises

    Until I folded the ground with it that spread

  54. كم قد غَشِينا بها في مَرِّها خِطَطاً

    وكم لَقينا بها من دَهْرِها خُطَطا

    How many cunning we covered in its passage

    And how many we faced of its trickeries

  55. إلى كريمِ كِرامٍ في الزّمانِ إذا

    قاموا كُسالَى إلى أُكرومةٍ نَشِطا

    To a generous one of generous people if

    They stood up to nobility, active

  56. فأَرْعنى سَمعك المَفْدِيَّ صاحبُه

    وعُدَّ غَيرَ الّذي قد قُلتُه لَغَطا

    So listen, its hearing redeems its owner

    And count other than what I said nonsense

  57. وخُذْه كالدُّرِّ وهْو الدُّرُّ أَسرُدُه

    في سلكِ خدْمتِكَ العَلياءِ مُنْخَرِطا

    And take it like a pearl and it is the pearl, I string it

    In the strand of your supreme service, engaged

  58. مِمّا يكادُ إذا غنّى الرُّواةُ به

    يُحِسُّ سامعُه في أُذْنهِ قُرُطا

    Of what the reciters would feel when they sing it

    In their ears a bracelet if they listened

  59. لِسابقٍ في المعالي لو يَصيرُ لها

    مُقرَّباً بفِناء المجدِ مُرتَبِطا

    To a precedent in supremacy, if he becomes

    Devoted to the courtyard of glory, connected

  60. قُلْ للأكابرِ زادَ اللهُ مُلكَهمُ

    لا تَحرِمُوا الفَضْلَ منكمْ سِيرةً وَسَطا

    Tell the great ones, may God increase their kingdoms

    Do not deprive excellence from you, moderately

  61. عَطْفاً على الشِّعْرِ عَطْفاً إنّه عَمَلٌ

    إن لم تُثيبوا عليه أنتمُ حَبِطا

    Kindness to poetry, kindness it is a work

    If you do not reward it, you wasted it

  62. يَضيعُ مثْليَ فيما بَينَ أَظهُرِكُمْ

    عارٍ منَ العارِ لا يُلقَى عليه غِطا

    The like of me is lost between you

    A disgrace that no cover is cast upon

  63. أُجِيدُ وَسْمَ عُلاكمُ بالمديحِ لها

    وأَخرجُ الدَّهرَ من إنعامكمْ عُلُطا

    I am adept at branding your supremacy with praise

    And bringing out time from your favors, confused

  64. عامٌ تَقضّى وعامٌ بعدُ تابعُه

    لقد تَكلّفْتُ من تأميلِكمْ شَطَطا

    A year passed and a successive year

    I have burdened myself from your procrastination, rambled

  65. فانْعَرْ بها أَيهُا الحادي على طَرَب

    إذا التقَى الصُّبْحُ بالظّلماءِ واخْتَلَطا

    So turn with it, O guide, to euphoria

    When the dawn meets the darkness and mingled

  66. واقْذِفْ منَ المَنزلِ النّائي بأَرحُلِنا

    إلى كريمٍ يُوفّي الظّنَّ ما اشْتَرطا

    And cast from the distant abode our belongings

    To a generous one who fulfills hopes, stipulated

  67. وعَدِّ عن مَعشرٍ قَلّتْ مَواهِبُهُمْ

    فلو يكونُ ندىً في الجَوِّ ما سَقَطا

    And ignore the group whose gifts are few

    If it becomes dew in the air it would not have fallen

  68. وثِقْ على كلِّ حالٍ بالقَبولِ لنا

    لا يَعدَمُ الدُّرُّ بين النّاسِ مُلتِقطا

    And be confident in acceptance for us in every case

    The jewel is not missed by people, picked up

  69. ورُبّما عاد بالإحسانِ سادَتُنا

    فقد يُغاثُ الفتَى من بَعدِ ما قَنِطا

    And perhaps our masters may return with kindness

    So the bloke may be saved after having despaired

  70. صَبْراً على الدَّهرِ صَبْراً يُستعانُ به

    إنّ الحُظوظَ سِراعٌ مَرَةً وبِطا

    Patience over time, the patience by which is sought victory

    Fortunes are sometimes quick and sometimes slow
