أسهرَ النّاظرَ بعضُ اللّيالي

وأنام الأمْنُ كُلَّ الأنام

The night vigil keeps some nights awake

While security sleeps through all of time

عاقدٌ طَوْقَ الحَمامِ ظُباهُ

للعِدا مَوْضعَ طَوْقِ الحَمام

Wearing the ringdove's collar, its beauty

For the enemy is the ringdove's ring

كُلُّ مَجْبولٍ على الطّعْنِ طَبْعاً

يَرْضَعُ الصَّعْدةَ يومَ الفِطام

Everyone born to stab, their nature

Suckling venom from the day they're weaned

وغريبُ الخَطِّ يَجْعَلُ لاماً

ألِفَ الخَطَيِّ في كُلِّ لام

The stranger makes every letter a lam

The lam's familiar in each lam he's seen

يا أمينَ اللهِ دُمتَ مَلاذاً

للورَى غيرَ ذَميمِ الذِّمام

O Allah's trustee may you remain

A refuge for all from blame and shame

حالياً من كلِّ جُودٍ وبَأْسٍ

خالياً من كُلِّ ذَمٍّ وذام

Now of all merit and courage emptied

Now of all vice and blame exempted

صار للهِ الخليفةُ فيها

قائماً بالحَقِّ أيِّ القِيام

For God the Caliph in it stands

Upholding right in every task at hand
