1. If my days have held me back from my aims,

    Let the arrow be excused when the archer misses.

  2. Had time favored me, I would not have spent a breath

    Except in service to this exalted court.

  3. But the hindrance of troubles that befall me

    Keeps me from visiting it, despite my longing.

  4. Even so, I offer to his presence,

    Though absent, praise whose fragrance has spread abroad,

  5. And a tribute that keeps roaming through the ages,

    Traveling between Najd and Tihama.

  6. What a noble man, whose ambitions rise high,

    Apportioned among lofty deeds—what an allotment!

  7. His character is free of cowardice and greed;

    His honor is clear of blame and anyone who would blame him.

  8. The necks of wealth remain bowed before him

    To a generous hand, a sharp-edged sword.

  9. In every fingertip of that hand, taken alone,

    Is an overflowing, surging sea of generosity.

  10. May you be congratulated on that high rank, pure one of the two realms,

    A rank that strides proudly amid reverence and esteem.

  11. Since you came to Jayy and then departed, it gained

    Two assurances against injustice and darkness.

  12. All its nights had been black; time attended to them,

    And they became bright days.

  13. You made valleys of gold flow for the people;

    They ran with your abundant, pouring bounty.

  14. You bore wealth with which you guarded your glory;

    The sword adorns the hand of one who bears and protects.

  15. This is perfection; may its eye forever

    Be turned away from you, loftiest of the sons of Sam.

  16. The completion of your worldly blessing is that it endure;

    May its giver adorn your blessings by making them complete.
