1. أمّا تَحيّةِ الطَّرْفِ الكَحيلِ

    عَشِيّةَ همَّ صَحْبي بالرَّحيلِ

    The greeting of the kohl-lined eye

    On the eve my companions departed

  2. لقد قطَع النَّوى إلاّ ادِّكاري

    وبلَّتْ عَبْرتي إلا غليلي

    Has severed my sleep except for my memories

    And my tears have flowed except for my torment

  3. يُرَوّي ضاحِيَ الوجَناتِ دَمْعي

    ويَعدِلُ عن لَهيبِ جَوىً دَخيل

    My tears water the cheeks of the meadows

    And cool the heat of an unsympathetic stranger

  4. وما نَفْعي وإن هطَلتْ غُيوثٌ

    إذا أخطأْنَ أمكِنةَ المُحول

    Of no use is the pouring rain

    If it misses the places of my beloved

  5. هُمُ نَقَضُوا عهودي يومَ بانوا

    فأبدَوْا صفحةَ الطَّرْفِ المَلول

    They broke their vows the day they left

    Revealing cold glances and aloof eyes

  6. وفَوْا بالهَجْرِ لمّا أوعَدوني

    وكم وَعَدوا الوِصالَ ولم يَفُوا لي

    They reneged on reunion after promising it

    How often they promised union but did not fulfill it

  7. وفي الرَّكْبِ الهِلاليِّينَ خِشْفٌ

    تَعرّضَ يومَ تَوديعِ الحُمول

    In the crescent-shaped caravan were charming ones

    Who on the day of farewell cast me languishing glances

  8. أصابَ بِطَرْفهِ الفَتّانِ قَلْبي

    وكيف يُصابُ ماضٍ من كَليل

    That captivated my love-sick heart

    How can what is gone be swayed by a fading shadow?

  9. بَخِلْتَ وقد حَظِيتَ بصَفْوِ وُدّي

    وإنّ منَ العناءِ هَوَى البخيل

    You were stingy though you had my sincere love

    But the miser's love is ever marred by stinginess

  10. وبِتُّ لو استزَرْتَ النَّومَ طَيْفي

    لجَرَّ إليك شَخْصي من نُحولي

    Had you conjured my phantom in your sleep

    My person would have been dragged to you from afar

  11. ولكنْ لا سبيلَ إلى شفاءٍ

    إذا مالَ الطّبيبُ على العَليل

    But no healing is possible

    When the healer leans toward the ailing

  12. ومِمّا هاجَ لي طَرباً خَيالٌ

    تأوَّب والدُّجَى مُرخي السُّدول

    Of what stirred joy in me were phantoms

    As dusk fell, drawing down its veils

  13. وصَحْبي قد أناخوا كُلَّ حَرْفٍ

    مُقلَّدةٍ بأثناءِ الجَديل

    While my companions halted at the edges

    Of the wadi, tethering the camels' reins

  14. يَبيتُ ذِراعُ ناجيةٍ وِسادي

    ويُضْحي ظِلُّ سابقةٍ مَقيلي

    The arm of a beauty becomes my pillow

    And the shadow of a maiden my quilt

  15. وأفخَرُ إن فَخَرْتُ بمَجْد نَفْسي

    إذا لم يَكْفِني شَرفُ القَبيل

    I take pride in my own glory

    If my tribe's honor does not suffice

  16. ويَملِكُ سِرَّ قلبي كُلُّ ظَبْيٍ

    عليلِ اللّحظِ كالرَّشأ الخَذول

    Every gazelle-eyed one owns my heart's secret

    Languid of glance like the unsettled dust

  17. حكَى بَدْءُ العِذارِ بعارِضَيْهِ

    مَدبَّ النّملِ في السّيْفِ الصَّقيل

    The down on his cheek narrates the start of separation

    As ants creep on the polished sword

  18. يَخِرُّ النّاظِرونَ له سُجوداً

    إذا أبدَى عنِ الخَدِّ الأميل

    Onlookers bow down before it

    When it shows from the bend of his cheek

  19. كما نظرَ المُلوكُ إلى كتابٍ

    على عُنْوانهِ عَبدُ الجَليل

    As kings regarded a missive

    With "Abdul Jalil" in the title

  20. مَليكٌ عَمَّ إحساناً وعَدْلاً

    فجَلَّ عنِ المُضاهي والعَديل

    A king whose kindness and justice spread

    Above all match and parallel

  21. أظَلَّ على بَني الدُّنيا اشْتِهاراً

    كما استَغْنَى النّهارُ عنِ الدَّليل

    He shaded the world's children gloriously

    As daylight has no need for guide

  22. له كَفٌّ يَزِلُّ المالُ عنها

    وكيف يَقِرُّ ماءٌ في مَسيل

    His palm scatters wealth from it

    How can water settle in a drain?

  23. وأقلامٌ تَفوتُ شَبا العوالي

    بطَوْلٍ في المَواقف لا بِطُول

    His pens surpass peaks of greatness

    Not by length, but by steadfastness in crises

  24. وزيرَ الدَّولتَيْنِ دُعاءَ راجٍ

    لصِدْقِ مَقالِه حُسْنَ القَبول

    The prayer of the minister of two states

    For acceptance of his words' honesty

  25. أعدْتَ نِظامَ هذا الدّينِ لمّا

    تَطَرَّفَ نَجْمُه أُفُقَ الأُفول

    You reformed this religion's order when

    Its star declined on the horizon of loss

  26. ومِلْتَ على بَني الإلْحاد حتّى

    تَركْتَ جُموعَهمْ جَزرَ النُّصول

    You were weary of atheist hordes until

    You left their throngs as barren wastelands

  27. بيومٍ عَزَّ دينُ اللهِ فيه

    وحَلَّ الكُفْرُ مَنزِلةَ الذَّليل

    On a day when God's faith was mighty

    And disbelief took the station of disgrace

  28. غسَلْتَ أديمَ تلكَ الأرضِ منهمْ

    بغَيْثٍ من دِمائِهم هَطول

    You washed the land's surface of them

    With a downpour of their blood

  29. ويومَ أتَتْ جُيوشُ الشّرْقِ طُرّاً

    رَعيلاً يَجْنِبونَ إلى رَعيل

    And when the East's armies came as flights

    Of locusts swarming flock by flock

  30. ثنَيْتَهمُ على الأعقابِ صُغْراً

    وقد زَحفوا كإفْراطِ السُّيول

    You drove them back in retreat

    Though they crept like torrents rushing wild

  31. فولَّوا غيرَ ملُتفتِينَ رُعْباً

    يَلُفّون الحُزونةَ بالسُّهول

    So they fled without looking back, terrified

    Winding through the plains in panic

  32. فحينَ رأيتَ خَوفَ سُطاكَ فيِهمْ

    وقد قطعَ الخليلَ عنِ الخَليل

    When you saw their fear seeping in

    Though the friend was cut off from friend

  33. عطَفْتَ على الجُناةِ وإنْ أساءوا

    سَجِيّةَ حازمٍ بَرٍّ وَصول

    You pardoned the offenders though they did wrong

    With the disposition of a kind, righteous man

  34. مَطولٍ بالوَعيدِ إذا انْتضَاه

    وما هو في المَواعدِ بالمَطول

    Slow to anger when provoked

    And no violator of promises

  35. سَديدِ الرّأْيِ لا فَوْتُ التّأنّي

    يُلِمُّ به ولا زلَلُ العَجول

    Sound in judgment, never hasty

    Or wavering at the fool's impulse

  36. تَعيبُ مَضاءه وقَفَاتُ حِلْمٍ

    كَعيْبِ المَشْرفيَّةِ بالفُلول

    You reject severity and acts of clemency alike

    Like the defects of a palace's towers

  37. ولم نَسمَعْ بأكرمَ منه طَبْعاً

    وأبعدَ عن فعالِ المُستَطيل

    None we have heard of is nobler in nature

    Or farther from the acts of the unjust

  38. وأسْرفَ في عَطِيَّةِ مُستَميحٍ

    وأصْفَحَ عَن جِنايةِ مُستَقيل

    Most generous toward the apologetic

    Kindest toward the remorseful offender

  39. فلمّا أحْدَثَ الأقْوامُ نَكْثاً

    إباءً من رِضاهمْ بالقليل

    So when the people broke their oath

    Refusing to accept even the littlest

  40. وصَدُّوا عن صَلاحِهمُ لَجاجاً

    صُدودَ الصَّبِّ عن نُصْح العَذول

    Obstinately blocking their own deliverance

    Like rain blocked by rugged hills

  41. جلبتَ عليهمُ للبأْسِ يَوماً

    ضُحاهُ من العَجاجةِ كالأصيل

    You summoned against them a day of might

    Whose dawn erupted with bright flashes

  42. نشَرتَ ذَوائبَ الرّاياتِ فيه

    وبُرْدُ النّقْعِ مَجْرورُ الذُّيول

    You unfurled the banners' plaits within it

    And the swords slid swift from their sheaths

  43. وثُرْتَ إليهمُ بالخَيْلِ شُعْثاً

    تُصرِّفُها فَوارِسُ غَيْرُ مِيل

    You surged at them wildly on horseback

    With horsemen charging unrestrained

  44. ففَرَّقَ جَمْعَهمْ طَعْنٌ دراكٌ

    وضَرْبٌ مثلُ أشْداقِ الفُحول

    A piercing, fatal blow scattered their horde

    And a stroke like that of valiant warriors

  45. وأجلَى الحَربُ منهمْ عن شَقِيٍّ

    أَسيرٍ أو جَريحٍ أو قَتيل

    The war stripped away from their midst

    Captive, wounded, or dead

  46. كأنّهمْ وقد صُرِعوا نَشاوَى

    تَساقَوا عن مُعتّقةٍ شَمول

    As though they were erected idols

    Toppled from a lofty sanctuary

  47. خُلِقْتَ مُؤيَّداً بعُلُوِّ جَدٍّ

    بغايةِ كُلِّ ما تَهْوَى كَفيل

    You were created, backed by glorious ancestry

    Achieving all that you desire, guaranteed

  48. إذا حَثَّ الجَوادَ إليكَ باغٍ

    لِيُرْكِضَه تَشكّلَ بالحُجول

    When a rebel spurs his steed toward you

    To race it, it halts in stillness

  49. إذا ألقَى حُساماً في يَمينٍ

    عَصاهُ وصارَ منه في التّليل

    When he hurls a sword in his right hand

    His staff becomes limp in his grip

  50. إليكَ مِنَ الحِصارِ سلَلْتُ شَخْصي

    خُروجَ القِدْحِ من كَفِّ المُجِيل

    I slipped through the siege to reach you

    Like a star freed from the rainy night

  51. فَجِئتُك عاريَ العِطفَيْنِ أَسعَى

    لأَلبسَ بُرْدَ نائِلِكَ الجْزيل

    I came bare-armed, hastening

    To wear your ample coat

  52. ولم تك كَعبةَ الإحسانِ إلاّ

    لِتُصبِحَ مَوْسمَ الوَفْدِ النُّزول

    You were Mecca's house of kindness

    So pilgrims throng to you in seasons

  53. فتَعْرَى حينَ نَلْقاها حَجيجاً

    ونُكْسَى حين يُؤْذِنُ بالقُفول

    Bare when we reach you on pilgrimage

    Robed when you permit return

  54. فحَقِّقْ مُنتهَى ظَنّي وأظْفِرْ

    يَدَيَّ فأنت مَسْؤولي وسُولي

    Fulfill my hopes and grant

    My hands victory, for you are my wish and solution

  55. وعِشْ في ظِلِّ أيّامٍ قِصارٍ

    تَمُرُّ عليكَ في عُمُرٍ طَويل

    Live in the shade of brief days

    Passing you in lengthy life
