عِدَّة المَجد يَراع وَحسام
وَثِمار الشُكر تَجنيها الكِرام
Glory’s implements are a reed pen and a keen sword;
and the noble reap the fruits of gratitude.
مِن يَبت سَهران في كسب العُلا
حَرم الغَمض عَلَيهِ وَالمَنام
Whoever spends the night wakeful in pursuit of lofty glory
is denied both the closing of his eyes and sleep.
أَعذَب الأَشياء في مَمنوعِها
وَبِأَعراض الدُمى يَحلو الغَرام
Of all things, the sweetest is what is forbidden;
and the beauties’ chaste reserve makes passion sweet.
