My heart has forsaken delight and joy
ever since that gazelle crossed my path.
I have gone on drinking my evening draught from my eyes,
and from his dusky lips became a drinker at dawn.
In the darkness I am reminded of his dwelling places
whenever lightning gleams and a bird breaks into song.
And mine is a heart steadfast against passion,
never wounded save by the cheeks of the fair.
