وروز لا كُنت قَلبي فيكَ مَكروبُ

الشَمسُ طالِعَة وَالبَدرُ مَحجوب

Though my heart was troubled for you one day

The sun rises and the moon remains veiled

أَرى الحِسان وَمالي بَينَهُم حسنٌ

ما كُل ما نَظَرتُهُ العَين مَحبوب

I see the beautiful ones, and I have no beauty among them

Not everything the eye sees is beloved

صفر الفواد مِن الأَفراح مُمتَليء

بِالحُزن صَدري وَفَيض الدَمع مَسكوب

The horizons are filled with joys

While my chest is filled with sorrow and pouring tears

أَبغي القِيام وَسوء الحَظ يَقعدني

مِن غالب القَدر المَحتوم مَغلوب

I wish to stand, but ill fate makes me sit

Defeated by the irresistible decreed fate
