1. ما يُنبت الحُسن أَو ما تَجلب السُفن

    بِالشام يُوجد وَالإِفضال وَالفطن

    Neither beauty grows, nor do ships bring

    In Damascus exist generosity and wisdom

  2. عَلى المَسَرات قَد شَيدَت مَرابعها

    فَلَيسَ يَسلُك فيها الهَم وَالحُزن

    Its dwellings erected over joy

    So sorrow and anxiety do not tread its paths

  3. لَم تَلقَ غَير كَبير في مَهابَتِهِ

    أَو بَدر داجية يَمشي بِهِ غُصن

    You will not find other than the greatest in his awe

    Or a bright full moon walking on a branch

  4. فَإِن نَظَرت فَما تَعنو العُيون لَهُ

    وَإِن سَمعت فَما تُصغي لَهُ الأذن

    If you look you cannot divert your eyes from him

    If you listen you cannot turn your ear from him
