ʿUqayla withheld her favors when I came bearing provisions,
preferring the resident’s need to the traveler’s.
So I said, “By God, were it not that she might tell him,
‘My enemies and those who envy me have let out the secret,’
we would have hailed her dwelling: ‘Greetings, O trace of a deserted camp!’
and al-ʿAqīq: ‘Ah, greetings, O valley!’”
I have allotted my share of her affection
to Maʿbad, Muʿādh, and Ibn Ṣayyād—
to the accursed one’s son, for whom al-Dukhān was kept hidden—
and to the singer, falsehood’s messenger, my procurer.
As for Muʿādh, I shall not mention him;
his forefathers did the same for mine.
