أَلَم تَعجَبِ الأَقوامُ مِن قَتلِ حُرَّةٍ
مِنَ الجامِعاتِ العَقلَ والدينَ والحَسَب
Did the tribes not marvel at the murder of a freeborn woman—
one who united reason, faith, and noble lineage,
مِنَ العاقِلاتِ المُؤمِناتِ بَرِيَّةٍ
مِنَ الشَكِّ وَالبُهتانِ وَالإِثمِ وَالرِّيَب
a wise, believing woman, innocent
of suspicion, slander, sin, and doubt?
كأَنَّهُمُ إِذ أَبرَزوها فَقُطِّعَت
بِأَسيافِهِم فازوا بِمَملَكَةِ العَرَب
As though, when they brought her forth and she was hewn to pieces
by their swords, they had won the kingdom of the Arabs.
