1. أَلا هاجَ التَذَكُّرُ لِي سَقامَا

    وَنُكسَ الدَاءِ والوَجَعَ الغَراما

    Alas! Remembrance has stirred sickness in me,

    And love's pain and torment have worn me down.

  2. سَلامَةُ إِنَّها هَمّي وَدائِي

    وَشَرُّ الدَاءِ ما بَطَنَ العِظاما

    Safety - indeed it is my care and remedy;

    And the worst sickness is that which attacks the bone.

  3. فَقُلتُ لَهُ وَدَمعُ العَينِ يَجري

    عَلى الخَدَّينِ أَربَعَةً سِجاما

    So I said to him, while tears flowed

    Down my cheeks in streams:

  4. عَلَيكَ لَها السَلامُ فَمَن لِصَبٍّ

    يَبيتُ اللَيلَ يَهذي مُستَهاما

    "Peace be upon you!" But what can one do for passion

    That spends the night raving deliriously?
