فَوا نَدَمي إِذ لَم أَعُج إِذ تَقولُ لِي
تَقَدَّم فَشَيّعنا إِلى ضَحوَةِ الغَدِ
Alas, I regret when I did not hastily respond as you said to me:
“Come forward, let us walk together towards tomorrow's sunrise.”
فَأَصبَحتُ مِمّا كانَ بَيني وَبَينها
سِوى ذِكرِها كالقابِضِ الماء بِاليَدِ
So I became, from what was between me and her,
Nothing but the memory of her, like grasping water with my hand.
