At the landmarks of al-Muḥaṣṣab near Minā, I was moved to sorrow
by a faint yearning moan that the camels echoed.
The disheveled pilgrims chanting the talbiya had raised their hands
with their petitions—and God is the Giver, the Forgiver.
So, Lord, the woman of Banū Mālik is my heart’s desire,
and You are able to bring us together.
I saw her only once, at Nu‘mān,
when her braids perfumed its soil with her scent.
Neither does love draw me near, nor does longing ever end;
nor does her dwelling come nearer, nor can my heart endure.
