طَرَقْتُ أَبا عَمْروٍ فَراعَ مَطِيَّتِي
بِوادِيهِ كَلْبٌ يُنْكِرُ الضَّيْفَ نابِحُ
I came by night to Abū ʿAmr; my mount was startled
by a barking dog in his valley, one that rejects the guest.
وَأَعْرَضَ عَنْها وَهْيَ دامٍ أَظَلُّها
عَلى لَغَبٍ دَمّىَ وَرِيدَيْهِ ذابِحُ
And he turned away from her, though the pad of her hoof was bleeding
from exhaustion—may a slaughterer bloody both his jugulars!
