I wander with sorrows that recur every day,

So for how long will time deceive me with its constant changes?

Does each day bring a different unjust ruler,

Humiliating the free and raising the slave?

When fortune approaches, it casts its blessings upon the unworthy,

And when it turns away, even the worthy are deprived of praise.

The poor man's life is filled with sorrow,

And good fortune does not bring the virtuous an easy life.

O fate, restrain your sweeping blows!

When disaster looms, even lions turn to flee.

    سِوايَ وَلا يَرْفَعْ عَقيرتَهُ الرَّعْدُ

    I cannot face the lightning, so let me live my years in peace;

May the thunder not lift its voice against me.

    Sometimes ambitions occur to me,

But my dignity prevents me from pursuing them.

In my youth, I followed misleading dreams,

And old age still deceives me after that.
