On the sweet spring of youth, desire of the gazelles or plaything of dolls

Young ladies whose flock is protected by a boy

Whose smell makes the jouster furrow his nose

My jealous eyes when darkness falls and spreads its robes

They secretly wander in the heart of the night

Staying awake while the stars overwhelm the horizons with sleep

I came upon them while the white shines under the Pleiades

So I parted their braids, stiff and twisted

And the break of dawn nearly showed me a glimpse

Of the late night on a gloomy face

And many dark moles on a mouth I did not kiss

So on the lips of darkness, instead, I sipped

I stayed awake anxious, tossing in the darkness

With fear upon fear, straight and slender

And I conversed with one until she wept blood

Our tears for the dawn when it smiled

And a tight embrace that steals the necklace from the neck

And neither of us wronged the wraps

Oh wonder until the dawn startles me

Woe to it, how it wounds my lovelorn heart

And if she met it with her tresses, she would bring back the night

Enveloped in its loosened veils, intensely black

And if its light left us, the tinkle of her trinkets

Would chime for us if it rang

And we do not care for the trinkets, though their sound

Shows the paucity of speech, strange

So no secret was divulged among them in confidence

Nor did we suspect them of betrayal

When she walked, speech did not enable the heart

Nor did the anklet attempt to speak

But her diffusion of musk oil betrayed me when she was perfumed

Bringing me sprigs of sweet basil, twins

No matter how many rumors spread between us

Love between us will not wither in future days

And I will always shun what I encountered in love

Graying on my temples from me plucking white hairs

Approaching forty, the nights overtake me

To make me gray and decrepit

And the train of old age and ascension pulls me

Burdening me with the weight of leadership, destroying me

And I shudder at honors, for it is in our nature

In times of adversity to act nobly

And I accept a delayed share of wealth

    If my home is elevated

And my soul is intimate with its honor while still free

Seeing old age as bounty and begging as ruin

And some blame me, but if I contemplate their words

I know with certainty that they are more blameworthy

They ridicule me for deviating from people

And not praising a despicable, blemished wretch

Wait, I seek the legacy of my kin

While you hope to be clothed and fed

By God, I never begged at your door, O barefoot one!

So leave me be, O smelly, marked one!

Shall I pave a path to greed in ignorance

And leave a course to contentment known?

And though when born, my midwives likened me

To a lion, with arms like a cub's, strong

Had I wanted to gain wealth by pursuing it

I would have burdened a gallant steed until overwhelmed

Exhausting it on the journey, panting and breathing hard

So none lives satisfied with the wages of a life

Others demand except as a disgraced wretch

And I have a glance toward high ambitions and a resolve

That refused to visit the frowning side

And I draw from both hands clouds

On a day whose sun is sick, whose expanse

With an opinion that sufficed you, glorious, extolling it,

You reached the distance, so be gentle to yourself, rest,

It suffices the young man to surpass Hatim in generosity

So the days were congratulated by glories from you

And good fortune visited you, its happiness caressing your train

And casting its staff amidst your abode, sheltering

So make your enemies sacrifices when they twist

As a patch that the glorious determined pierce

And spill the earth's blood for ritual from blessings

And give the state from bounties blood

And do not claim anything but nobility, for they

Reward benefaction to one who benefits

And whoever adopts the practice of wretches

And which servant of the sun whose family you flooded

With clouds like scattered rain when it intends

Who sends poetry to you, its taste is sweet

    Its rhymes embracing order, systematic

And who expects riches from your favor
