1. أما وَتجَنّي طَيْفِها المتأوِّبِ

    لَياليَ رَوّحْنا المَطايا بغُرَّبِ

    When her phantom draws near at night

    We spur our steeds across the desert

  2. لقد زارَني والعَتْبُ يَقْصُرُ خَطْوَهُ

    وأحْبِبْ بهِ منْ زائِرٍ مُتعتِّبِ

    Though he paid me a visit while censuring me

    Receive with love a censurer with complaint

  3. يواصِلُنا والليْلُ غَضٌّ شَبابُهُ

    ويَهْجُرُ إن شابَتْ ذَوائِبُ غَيْهَبِ

    He joins us while the night is tender in youth

    And leaves when the paths of deprivation turn rough

  4. فما لي وللطّيفِ المُعاوِدِ مَوْهِناً

    سَرى كاخْتِطافِ البارِقِ المتَصوِّبِ

    Why do I accept the gentle one returning weakened

    Traveling like a swift flashing lightning

  5. وقد كنتُ راجَعْتُ السُّلُوَّ عنِ الصِّبا

    وأضْمَرْتُ تَوْديعَ الغَزالِ المُرَبَّبِ

    Though once I had abandoned my lust for youth

    And resolved to bid the fawn with anklets farewell

  6. ورُحْتُ غَبيَّ السِّنِّ عنْ كُلِّ مَضْحَكٍ

    ومُنْكَسِرَ الألْحاظِ عنْ كُلِّ مَلْعَبِ

    I went about aged, amused by nothing

    And turned my glances from all jest

  7. على حينَ نادَى بالظّعائِنِ أهْلُها

    ولمْ يَحذَروا العُقْبى لِما في المُغَيَّبِ

    When her people called to misfortunes undeterred

    And did not fear what the future held unseen

  8. وأوْدى قِوامُ الدّينِ حتى تولّعَتْ

    صُروفُ الليالي بي فرَنَّقْنَ مَشْرَبي

    Until the pillars of faith collapsed and so

    The nights tossed me about, distorting my shelter

  9. سأذْكُرُهُ للرَّكْبِ كلّتْ مَطيُّهُمْ

    وللسّفْرِ إذ أعْياهُمُ وَجْهُ مَطْلَبِ

    I will recall him to a caravan when their riding beasts halt

    And to a journey when the goal tires them

  10. وللآمِلِ الصّادي متَى يَبْدُ مَنْهَلٌ

    ولمْ يَكُ منْ أحْواضِهِ يتنكَّبُ

    And to a hopeful searcher when a spring appears

    But its basins did not overflow for him

  11. ولولا نِظامُ الدّينِ كانتْ لُحومُنا

    وإنْ كَرُمَتْ نُهْبى نُسورٍ وأذْؤبِ

    If not for the order of faith, our flesh

    Would be prey for eagles and beasts

  12. وما زالَ منْ أبناءِ إسْحاقَ كَوكَبٌ

    يَلوحُ إذا ولّى الزّمانُ بكَوْكَبِ

    A star remains from Isaac's sons

    Gleaming when time turns with revolution

  13. ولما أتاني أنّهُ قَمَعَ العِدا

    هَتَفْتُ بآمالٍ روازِحَ لُغَّبِ

    When he came and told me he had suppressed the enemy

    I shouted hopes that purified my fervent cravings

  14. وقُلْتُ لصَحْبي بادِروا الصُّبْحَ نَبْتَكِرْ

    على بابليٍّ في الزُّجاجَةِ أصْهَبِ

    And said to my friends hurry to the dawn, let's start early

    With a Babylonian in a bottle, sparkling

  15. له مَشْرِقٌ في أوْجُهِ الشَّرْبِ بعْدَما

    تُصَوِّبُ ما بَينَ اللُّها نَحوَ مَغْرِبِ

    He has a rising sun in the faces of drinkers after

    He turns what is between joy and sorrow to the West

  16. كأنّ الحَبابَ المُسْتَطيرَ إذا طَفا

    لآلِئُ إلا أنّها لم تُثَقَّبِ

    As if the swirling beads when floating

    Are only pearls without holes

  17. ومنْ أرْيَحِيّاتي وللرّاحِ نَشْوَةٌ

    متى تَدُرِ الكأسُ الرّوِيّةُ أطْرَبِ

    From my pleasant Syrian wines a delight rises

    Whenever the plump goblet circulates intoxicating

  18. فظَلْنا بيَوْمٍ قصّرَ اللّهْوُ طُولَهُ

    نَشاوَى ولم نَحْفِلْ عِتابَ المؤَنِّبِ

    So we remained a day whose amusing length he shortened

    Happy, heeding not the blame of the warning critic

  19. تنِمُّ إلينا بالسّرورِ مَزاهِرٌ

    يُغازِلْنَ أطْرافَ البَنانِ المُخَضَّبِ

    Toward us the flowers smile with joy

    Flirting with the edges of the rouged fingertips

  20. إذا كُنتَ جاراً للحُسَيْنِ فلا تُبَلْ

    رِضَى المُتَجنّي فاتْرُكِ الدّهْرَ يَغْضَبِ

    If you are a neighbor of Hussein then do not care

    To please the complainer, leave time to rage

  21. أخو عَزْمَةٍ تُغْني إذا الأمْرُ أظْلَمَتْ

    جَوانِبُهُ عنْ باتِرِ الحَدِّ مِقْضَبِ

    Brother of Azma, you sing when the matter darkens

    Its aspects from the apathetic, withdrawn critic

  22. ويَسْمو إِلى أعْدائِهِ منْ كُماتِهِ

    وآرائِهِ في مِقْنَبٍ بَعْدَ مِقْنَبِ

    And you rise above your enemies in attacks

    And your views in a battle after battle

  23. ويَرْميهمُ واليومُ دامٍ عَجاجُهُ

    بجُرْدٍ يُبارينَ الأعِنّةَ شُزَّبِ

    And you shoot them while the day still rages

    With a lance rivalling spears in straightness

  24. ويَكْنُفُهُ نَصْرٌ يُناجي لِواءَهُ

    إذا ما هَفا كالطّائِرِ المُتَقلِّبِ

    And victory accompanies you whispering to its banner

    When it flutters like the circling bird

  25. فلِلّهِ مَيْمونُ النّقيبَةِ إن غَزا

    أراحَ إليهِ مالَهُ كلُّ مُعْزِبِ

    So blessed are the shooting stars when he attacks

    Relieved are all in desolation headed to him

  26. يقولُ لمُرْتادِ السّماحَةِ مَرحَباً

    إذا النِّكْسُ لَوّى ماضِغَيْهِ بمَرْحَبِ

    He says hello to the facile generous one

    When misfortune distorts its kneading in welcome

  27. ويُلْقي لدَيْهِ المُعْتَفونَ رِحالَهُمْ

    بأفْيَحَ لا يَعْتادُهُ المَحْلُ مُخْصِبِ

    And the grateful ones cast their belongings before him

    With openness that the place is not used to fertile

  28. حَلَفْتُ بأيدي الرّاقِصاتِ إِلى مِنىً

    يُبارينَ وَفْدَ الريحِ في كلِّ سَبْسَبِ

    I swore by the hands of the dancing girls to Mina

    Rivalling the procession of wind in every bracelet

  29. عليها غُلامٌ لاحَهُ السّيْرُ والسُّرى

    بهِ قَلَقٌ منْ عَزْمِهِ المُتَلَهِّبِ

    Upon them a youth whose travel and nightwalking shone on him

    With anxiety from his fervent determination

  30. وهزَّ الفَيافي عُودَهُ إذْ تَشَبّثَتْ

    يَدُ الدّهْرِ منهُ باللّحاءِ المُشَذَّبِ

    He shook the tent peg when the hand of fate clung

    To him from the rough plaited beard

  31. فلمْ يَدّرِعْ والشّمْسُ كادَ أُوارُها

    يُذيبُ الحَصى ظِلَّ الخِباءِ المُطَنَّبِ

    He did not armor himself though the sun almost

    Melted pebbles in the cool shade of the arched tent

  32. فما زالَ يَطْويها ويَطوينَهُ الفَلا

    إِلى أنْ أنَخْناهُنَّ عندَ المُحَصِّبِ

    He kept charging them and the horsemen charging him

    Until we rescued them at the battlefield

  33. لأَوْهَيْتَ أرْكانَ العَدوِّ بكاهِلٍ

    تُحَمِّلُهُ عِبْءَ المَعالي ومَنْكِبِ

    If you undertook the ministry as a warrior

    And stroked the dear wish of the zealous

  34. ومَنْ يتصدّى للوزارَةِ جاهِداً

    ويَمْسَحُ عِطْفَ المَطْلَبِ المُتعَصِّبِ

    Passion drew you to it and settled

    Upon the best youth in the best position

  35. فقدْ نَزَعَتْ وَلْهَى إلَيْكَ وخيّمَتْ

    بخَيْرِ فَتىً واسْتَوْطَنَتْ خَيْرَ مَنصِبِ

    Far between the two ministers - one retiring

    Came to power willingly, and the other fatigued

  36. وشتّانَ ما بَيْنَ الوَزيرَيْنِ وادِعٍ

    أتَتْهُ العُلا طَوْعاً وآخرَ مُتعَبِ

    Your father's pride is enough that you are his son

    As he is foremost in pride from a father

  37. فحَسْبُ أبيكَ مَفْخَراً أنّكَ ابْنُهُ

    كما أنّهُ ناهيكَ في الفَخْرِ منْ أبِ

    You remained while the efforts continuously

    Flocked refreshed and unfailing to you

  38. بَقِيتَ ولا زالَتْ تَروحُ وتَغْتَدي

    إليكَ المَساعي غَضّةَ المُتَنَسَّبِ

    While the enviers never stopped clothing their child

    With worries, winding difficulties white-haired

  39. ولا بَرِحَ الحُسّادُ يَكْسو وليدَهُمْ

    لَواعِجُ منْ هَمٍّ غَدائِرَ أشْيَبِ
