مَنْ أغْفَلَ الحَزْمَ أدْمى كَفَّهُ نَدَما

واسْتَضْحَكَ النّصْرَ مَنْ أبْكى السّيوفَ دَما

He who neglects prudence bloodies his palm with regret,

And he who makes swords weep laughs victory.

فالرّأيُ يُدْرِكُ ما يَعْيَى الحُسامُ بهِ

إذا الزّمانُ بِذَيلِ الفِتْنَةِ الْتَثَما

Reason realizes what worn blades cannot,

When time drags the train of sedition along.

هابَ العِدا غَمَراتِ المَوْتِ إذْ بَصُروا

بالأُسْدِ تَنْزِلُ مِنْ سُمْرِ القَنا أجَما

The foe feared the overwhelming darkness of death, when

They saw the lion descending the summit of the spear haughtily.

والخَيْلُ عابِسَةٌ يَعْتادُها مَرَحٌ

إذا امتَطاها نِظامُ الدّينِ مُبْتَسِما

And the horses frown, though frolic suits them,

When the system of religion rides them smiling.

في ساعَةٍ تَذَرُ الأرْماحَ راعِفةً

والمَشْرَفيَّ على الأرواحِ مُحْتَكِما

In an hour when lances quiver feverishly

And destiny reigns over souls arbitrarily.

رَطْبُ الغِرارَيْنِ مأمونٌ على بَطَلٍ

يَخشى زَماناً على الأحرارِ مُتَّهَما

Wet spear-heads are entrusted to a hero

Who fears a time suspicious of the noble.

تَلوحُ غُرَّتُهُ والجُرْدُ نافِضَةٌ

على جَبينِ الضُّحى منْ نَقْعِها قَتَما

His courage flourishes, and the horsemen teem

On the brow of dawn with its juice like blood.

وللسّهامِ حَفيفٌ في مَسامِعِهمْ

كالنّحْلِ ألْقَيْتَ في أبْياتِهِ الضَّرَما

And arrows whisper in their ears

Like bees you've thrown into their dwellings furiously.

إذا اسْتَطارَتْ طِلاعَ الأُفْقِ أرْدَفَها

بالبيضِ عُوِّضْنَ عن أغْمادِها القِمَما

When the horizons' stars rise he replaces them

With white blades their sheaths having been substituted.

لمْ تَطْلُعِ الشّمسُ إلا استُقْبِلَتْ بِعَمىً

ولا بَدا النّجْمُ إلا اسْتَشْعَرَ الصّمَما

The sun does not rise but meets blindness,

Nor a star appears but perceives deafness.

توقّفوا كارْتِدادِ الجَفْنِ وانصَرَفوا

كما طَرَدْتَ حِذارَ الغارَةِ النَّعَما

They stopped like retracting eyelids and left

As you repelled the danger of the charm easily.

والأعْوَجِيّةُ كادَتْ مِنْ تَغَيُّظِها

على فَوارِسِها أنْ تَلْفِظَ اللُّجُما

Frustration almost, from their provocation,

Made the mares spew their bits at their horsemen.

منْ كُلِّ طِرْفٍ يَبُذُّ الطّرْفَ مُلتَهِباً

في حُضْرِهِ ولِشَأْوِ الرّيحِ مُلْتَهِما

From every side the sidelong glance sparks

Ablaze in its presence, to the tempo of the winds engulfed.

رَدْعُ النّجيعِ مُبينٌ في حَوافِرِها

مِمّا يَطَأْنَ بِمُسْتَنِّ الرّدى بُهَما

The restraint of the neighing is clear in their hooves

From what they tread, straightened by the butt ends angrily.

كأنّ كُلَّ بَنانٍ منْ ولائِدِهِمْ

أهْدى إلَيْهِنّ إذْ نَجَّيْنَهُمْ عَنَما

As if every offspring from their loins

When they rescued them, gifted them an ostrich.

باضَ النَّعامُ على هاماتِهمْ وهُمْ

أشْباهُهُ والوَغى يَستَرْجِفُ اللِّمَما

The ostrich runs on their foreheads while they

Resemble it, and chaos makes the censures recoil.

فَباتَ أرْحَبُهمْ في كُلِّ نائِبَةٍ

ذَرْعاً تَضيقُ عليهِ الأرضُ مُنْهَزما

So the most spacious of them in every calamity

Became a span, the earth too narrow for him defeated.

وما التَفَتَّ احتِقاراً نحوَهُ وبِهِ

نَجلاءُ يَلْوي لَها حَيْزومَهُ ألَما

He did not turn in disdain toward it, and toward him

A piercing glance that twists its eyebrow painfully.

ولو أمَلْتَ إليه السّوطَ غادَرَهُ

شِلْواً بمُعتَرَكِ الأبطالِ مُقْتَسَما

And if you turned the whip to him,

He dodged it disgracefully amid the heroes divided.

وعُصبَةٍ مُلِئَتْ غَيظاً صُدورُهُمُ

منْ مُخفِرٍ ذِمّةً أو قاطِعٍ رَحِما

And a band whose chests Swelled with rage

From a protector of sanctity or relative-cutter.

واستَوْطَؤوا ثَبَجَ البَغْضاءِ واجتَذَبوا

حَبْلاً أُمِرَّ على الشّحْناءِ فانْجذَما

They mounted the camel-litter of hatred and pulled

A rope knotted over enmity so it tore.

والشَّعبُ إنْ دَبّ في تَفريقِهِ إحَنٌ

فلن يَعودَ طَوالَ الدّهرِ مُلْتَئِما

If discord creeps into dividing the people

Then they will never reunite for ages.

وأنتَ أبعَدُ في فَضْلٍ ومَكْرُمةٍ

شأوأُ وأثْبَتُ منهمْ في الوَغى قدَمَا

While you are further in merit and nobility,

More resilient in battle, of firmer step.

وخَيْرُهُمْ حَسَباً ضخْماً وأغْزَرُهُمْ

سَيْباً وأضفى على مُسْتَرْفِدٍ نِعَما

The best of them in lineage, most generous,

Of ample hospitality, conferring bounty.

تَعْفو وتَصْفَحُ عنْ عِزٍّ ومَقدِرَةٍ

ولا نَراكَ وقيذَ الحِلْمِ مُنْتَقِما

You pardon and overlook power and ability,

And we do not see you avenging patience spitefully.

إذا أذابَ شَرارُ الحِقْدِ عاطفَةً

هَزَزْتَ للعَفْو عِطْفَيْ سُؤدَدٍ كَرَما

If the sparks of malice melt affection

You incline to pardon with the chivalry of the noble.

فوَدَّ كُلُّ بَريءٍ مُذْ عُرِفْتَ بهِ

دون البَريّةِ أنْ يَلْقاكَ مُجْتَرِما

So every innocent person has loved, since knowing you,

To encounter you reverently, without innocence.

ومِنْ مَساعيكَ فَتْحٌ إذ سَلَلْتَ لهُ

رَأياً فَلَلتَ به الصّمْصامَةَ الخَذِما

And one of your achievements is victory, when you slipped

An opinion that untied the firm deadlock.

أضحى بهِ الدِّينُ مُفْتَرّاً مَباسِمُهُ

والمُلْكُ بعدَ شَتاتِ الشّملِ مُنتَظِما

Through it religion's smiles widened

And the kingdom consolidated after the people dispersed.

فأشْرَقَ العَدْلُ والأيامُ داجِيةٌ

بَثّتْ يَدُ الظُّلْمِ في أرجائِها الظُّلَما

Justice shone, and the days glared

With the hand of injustice spreading its darkness.

وقد رَمى بِكَ ركْنُ الدينِ مُعضلةً

يَهابُ كلُّ كَميٍّ دونَها قُحَما

And the pillar of religion made you bear

A predicament every brave man dreads to confront.

فقُمْتُ بالخَطْبِ مَرْهوباً عَواقِبُهُ

للعَزْمِ مُحتَضِناً للحَزْمِ مُلتَزِما

So I stood for the task, its consequences revered,

Embracing prudence, committed to resolve.

كالبَحرِ مُتَلْطِماً والفَجْرِ مُبتَسِماً

والليثِ مُعتَزِماً والغَيثِ مُنسَجما

Like the tumultuous sea, the smiling dawn,

The resolute lion, and the pouring rain harmonized.

كَفَتْهُ كُتْبُكَ أن تُزْجى كتائِبُهُ

وأُلْهِمَ السّيفُ أن يَستنْجِدَ القَلَما

Your books sufficed that its battalions be repelled

And the sword was inspired to seek the pen's aid.

تَلْقى الشّدائِدَ في نَيْلِ العُلا وَلَها

يُعالِجُ الهَمَّ مَنْ يَستنْهِضُ الهِمَما

You take on adversities in attaining ascent,

And he who rouses ambitions treats anxiety.

وإنْ أرابَكَ منْ دَهْرٍ تَكَدّرُهُ

كُنتُ المُصَفّى على أحْداثِهِ شِيَما

If a vexing fate befalls you,

I am filtered regarding its events discreetly.

فابْسُطْ إِلى أمَدٍ تَسْمو إليهِ يَداً

تَكفي المُؤمِّلَ أنْ يَستَمْطِرَ الدِّيَما

So extend to a course aspired by a hand

That provides the expectant with sufficient rain.

ولا تُبَلْ سَخَطَ الأعداءِ إنّهمُ

يَرضَوْنَ منكَ بأن تَرضى بهِمْ خَدَما

Do not mind the enemies' rage, they

Are content if you accept them as servants.

وسَلْ بيَ المَجْدَ تعلمْ أيَّ ذي حَسَبٍ

في بُردَتَيَّ إذا ما حادِثٌ هَجَما

Ask the glory's house about my lineage, when

An event descends, clad in my mantle.

يُلينُ للخِلِّ في عزٍّ عَريكَتَهُ

مَحْضَ الهَوى ولهُ العُتْبى إذا ظُلِما

It softens to sincerity in power its hostility,

Pure passion, though it protests when wronged.

منْ مَعشَرٍ لا يُناجي الضّيمُ جارَهُمُ

نِضْوَ الهُمومِ غَضيضَ الطّرْفِ مُهْتَضَما

Of a people whose confidant is not their neighbor,

When distress wraps them, teary-eyed and aggrieved.

فصِحّةُ الوُدِّ تَأبى وهْيَ ظاهِرةٌ

أن تُخفيَ الحالُ في أيّامكُمْ سَقَما

The health of affection refuses, though apparent,

That your days conceal illness from me.

والدّهْرُ يعلَمُ أنِّي لا أذِلُّ لهُ

فكيفَ أفتَحُ بالشّكوى إليكَ فما

Time knows I do not humiliate it,

So why should I complain to you, and why?
