By him whose resting place formed three hillocks -

A spring which quenched the thirst of his two sand hills -

I dashed against the cheek of the earth until

The reins slackened in their pressing haste -

    An enduring imprint which appeared

    Like a faint tattoo -

And which spring set aflame and kindled

As she unloosed her dishevelled tresses -

Her pastor well-nigh clothed in a robe

Of dew the ascetic wove for him -

A haunt of slender-waisted damsels where is heard

The gentle croon of the lute -

When the breezes of Tabut breathed o’er it

And the airs from Hulayy -

I know not if the hearts of birds

Were drawn to its berries or its breast -

I recalled there Sulayma and tears streamed

Down my cheeks in torrents for her sake -

My passion grazed her cheek and so overcome

Was she that tears rebelled against her -

And here am I, miserly in my love

Yet bountiful in passion for it -

And the tall, white, perfumed Qurashi

Brought me greater joy than any other -

And he continued to taunt me with copious tears

Met by a loving face -

And your weeping is enough; my eyes

Saw those tears and the hermit wept -
