تَنَكَّرَ لي دَهْري وَلَمْ يَدْرِ أَنَّنِي

أَعِزُّ وَأَحْداثُ الزَّمانِ تَهُونُ

My fortunes disowned me but they did not know

That I am too proud for the days' blows to stun

فَظَلَّ يُريني الخَطْبَ كَيْفَ اعْتداؤهُ

وَبِتُّ أُرِيهِ الصَّبْرَ كَيْفَ يَكونُ

So they showed me their worst to break my composure

While I showed them patience to see what I'd become
