I reproached Hudhaym when he turned away from the protected abode,
Hurrying on with the riding beasts, without lingering.
So he swore an oath, and his Lord knows it well—
May he fail if it was the oath of one who breaks his word—
That he had not driven them away deliberately, nor recognized the abode.
I said, “May you be spared harm. Go on; do not linger.”
Yet memory struck my eyelids and my heart
With the twin fruits of longing, old and new:
Fresh tears that poured in earnest,
And an ancient yearning playing havoc within my ribs.
