1. أماطَ والليلُ أثيثُ الجَناحْ

    عنْ مَبْسِمِ الشّمْسِ لِثامَ الصّباحْ

    The night uncovered the adornments of the pavilion

    From the smile of the sun the veil of dawn

  2. أغَنُّ يَعْروهُ مِراحُ الصِّبا

    ويَنْثَني فالقَدُّ نَشْوانُ صاحْ

    The passing breeze sings its melody

    And the bending branches sway gently at dawn

  3. كالفَنَنِ المَهْزوزِ تَعْتادُهُ

    على لُغوبٍ نَسَماتُ الرّياحْ

    Like a tottering structure accustomed

    To the gentle breaths of the winds

  4. يَطْوي الفَلا وَهْناً وقد نَشَّرَتْ

    ذَوائِبَ النّارِ قُرَيْشُ البِطاحْ

    It folds the twigs weakened while

    The flames of fire ignited the shrubs

  5. حيثُ القِبابُ الحُمْرُ مَحفوفَةٌ

    بالأسَلِ السُّمْرِ وبِيضِ الصِّفاحْ

    Where the red domes are surrounded

    By white marble and gray stone

  6. حَلَّ الدُّجى حُبْوَتَها إذ سَرَى

    والليلُ للبَدْرِ حِماهُ مُباحْ

    Darkness wrapped its gowns when

    The night left the moon free to roam

  7. إذا الكَرى رنَّقَ في عَيْنَيهِ

    رَنا بأجْفانٍ مِراضٍ صِحاحْ

    When the fates frown in their eyes

    They cry with diseased eyelids at dawn

  8. وإنْ وَشى الحَلْيُ بهِ راعَهُ

    بَعْدَ وَفاءِ الخُرْسِ غَدْرُ الفِصاحْ

    And if dreams disappoint the sleeper

    After the loyalty of sleep comes the betrayal of consciousness

  9. وكيفَ يَستَكْتِمُ خَلْخالَه

    سِرّاً وقد نَمّ عليهِ الوِشاحْ

    How can it hide its anklet secretly

    When the gown has slipped and uncovered it

  10. إذا رَنا لَفَّ الرّدى حاسِراً

    بِدارِعٍ فاللحْظُ شاكي السِّلاحْ

    If it cries the fates disappoint it

    So the gaze complains while adorned for battle

  11. وما أضاءَ البَرْقُ منْ ثَغْرِهِ

    إلا تَجَلّى حَبَبٌ فوقَ راحْ

    And when lightning flashed from its horizon

    A loved one appeared atop the sands

  12. كأنّهُ الرّوْضَةُ مَطْلولَةً

    لَها اغتِباقٌ بالندىً واصْطِباحْ

    As if it were a garden watered

    With dew and morning showers

  13. إن مَطَرَتْ فيها دُموعُ الحَيا

    ظلّتْ بأنْفاسِ النُّعامى تُراحْ

    If the tears of life rained down

    It remains with the breaths of ostriches comforting it

  14. فالطَّرْفُ إن مرَّضَهُ نَرْجِسٌ

    والخَدُّ وَرْدٌ والثّغورُ الأقاحْ

    So if a narcissus hurts its eyes

    The cheek is a rose and the lips red corals

  15. صَغا إِلى اللاحي وصَغْوُ الهَوى

    إليهِ لا رُوِّعَ صَبٌّ بِلاحْ

    It listened to the flirtatious words

    No morning remnant startled by the madness of love

  16. كالمُهْرِ إنْ طامَنْتَ منْ غَرْبِهِ

    أشَمَّهُ المَيْعَةَ جِنُّ المِراحْ

    Like an infatuated horse if assured

    The jinn of passion perceives its scent

  17. أُنْصِفُ إنْ جارَ وأعْنو إذا

    سَطا وألْقى بالخُشوعِ الجِماحْ

    I am fair when it is unjust and I support it when

    It treats me right and I surrender myself with humility

  18. فالغِيُّ رُشْدٌ وهَواني لهُ

    في الحُبّ عِزٌّ وفَسادي صَلاحْ

    Passion is maturity and my surrender to it

    Is honor and my corruption is righteousness

  19. وربّما تَجْمَحُ بي نَخْوَةٌ

    تَلْهَجُ عَيْنايَ لها بالطِّماحْ

    Ardor may boil within me

    Making my eyes sparkle with desire

  20. سأطْلُبُ العِزَّ ولوْ رَفْرَفَتْ

    على حَواشيهِ عَوالي الرِّماحْ

    I will seek glory even if

    Spearheads flutter around its borders

  21. بضَرْبَةٍ رَعْلاءَ أو طَعْنَةٍ

    تَخاوَصَتْ منها عُيونُ الجِراحْ

    With a deadly strike or a stab

    From which bleeding eyes negotiated

  22. مَتى أراها وهْي مُزْوَرَّةٌ

    تَعْدو بآسادِ الشّرى كالسَّراحْ

    Whenever I see it adorned

    Galloping like mares set loose

  23. واليومُ مُحْمَرُّ أديمِ الضُّحى

    بالمَشْرَفيّاتِ صَقيلُ النّواحْ

    Today the surface of dawn is reddened

    With polished metal disks

  24. فالذّابِلُ الخَطّيُّ يَشكو الصّدى

    حتّى يُرَوّى بالنّجيعِ المُفاحْ

    The slender-waisted date palm complains to the echo

    Until it is satiated by the ripe fruits

  25. يا سَرَواتِ الرَّكْبِ رِفْقاً بِنا

    فالأرْحَبيّاتُ رَذايا طِلاحْ

    Oh you tall caravans, be gentle with us

    For we are plump and fertile

  26. أسْمَعَها الرَّعْدُ بإرْزامِهِ

    إهابَةَ الحادي وَراءَ اللِّقاحْ

    Thunder heard it with its ties

    As the guide followed behind the herds

  27. واعْتَرَضَ المُزْنُ وفي شَوْطِهِ

    دونَ شَآبيبِ حَياهُ انْتِزاحْ

    Lightning intervened in its journey

    Before the demise of its life withdrew

  28. يومِضُ بالبَرْقِ وكمْ حارَدَتْ

    بوَدْقِهِ أطْباؤُهُ حينَ لاحْ

    It flashes with lightning, and how often

    Its beings dispute when it appears

  29. يَحْكي أبا المِغْوارِ في بِشْرِهِ

    يا لَيْتَهُ أشْبَهَهُ في السَّماحْ

    It describes the father of caves in its good tidings

    If only he resembled it in generosity

  30. سِيروا إِلى آلِ عَدِيٍّ نُقِمْ

    في عَطَنٍ رَحْبٍ وحَيٍّ لَقاحْ

    Travel to the family of Addi

    In a vast valley, an open neighborhood and fertile lands

  31. حيثُ العِراصُ الخُضْرُ والأنْعُمُ ال

    بيضُ وأنوارُ الوُجوهِ الصِّباحْ

    Where the green palm trees, white sheep

    And the bright faces of youth at dawn

  32. لا المَنْهَلُ المَوْرودُ طَرْقٌ ولا ال

    مَسْرَحُ مَمنوعٌ ولا الظِّلُ ضاحْ

    Neither the frequented spring, nor the

    Forbidden field, nor the shaded tent

  33. إذا بلَغْنا عَضُدَ الدِّينِ لمْ

    نَثْلِمْ شَبا المَحْلِ بضَرْبِ القِداحْ

    When we reach the pillar of the faith we

    Will not disturb the youths by clashing cups

  34. نُهْدي إليهِ مِدَحاً نَمْتَري

    بهِنَّ خِلْفَ النّائِلِ المُسْتَماحْ

    We send him praise, we pride ourselves

    With more than what the envious can hope for

  35. أروَعُ طَلْقُ البُرْدِ لم يحْتَضِنْ

    منَ التُّقى حاشِيَتَيْهِ جُناحْ

    The most magnificent cold has not embraced

    In its fringes, wings of piety

  36. نائي المَدى يَقْصُرُ عن شأْوِهِ

    خُطاً أطالَتْها الأعادي فِساحْ

    My far-reaching glory falls short of its stature

    A line elongated by enemies spreading wide

  37. لا يغْلِبُ الحَقَّ بهِ باطِلٌ

    ولا يُداني الجِدَّ منهُ مِزاحْ

    No falsehood overtakes its truth

    Nor does jest parallel its seriousness

  38. ومأْزِقٍ أغْمَدَ فيه الظُّبا

    لمّا انْتَضى عَزْمَتَهُ للكِفاحْ

    And an impasse where the hero sheathed

    His resolve when the struggle intensified

  39. ونازَلَ المَوْتَ بأرْجائِهِ

    شَهْباءُ تَقْتادُ المَنايا رَداحْ

    And death descended upon its domains

    Grey ashes leading to many deaths

  40. وأنْصَتَ القِرْنُ لِداعي الرّدى

    حيثُ العَوالي جَهَرَتْ بالصِّياحْ

    The era listened to the call of demise

    As the summits loudly shouted

  41. حتى تولّى كالنّعامِ العِدا

    مُقَنَّعي الهامِ ببَيْضِ الأداحْ

    Until it assumed like an ostrich

    Covering its worries with speckled eggs

  42. يا واهِبَ الأعْمارِ بعدَ اللُّها

    وَرَتْ زِنادي بكَ قَبْلَ اقْتِداحْ

    Oh granter of lives after God

    My soul relied on you before igniting

  43. إليكَ أغْدو غيرَ مُستَلْفِتٍ

    جِيدي إِلى رَشْحِ أكُفٍّ شِحاحْ

    To you I come without pretense

    My hand outstretched for a fist that gives generously

  44. بهِمّةٍ تَفْتَرُّ عنْ مُنْيَةٍ

    مَدَّ هَواديهِ إليها النّجاحْ

    With ambition that distracts from demise

    And success has extended its valleys to it

  45. وبينَ طِمْرَيَّ فتًى ماجِدٌ

    لمْ يجتَذِبْ عارِفَةً بامْتِداحْ

    A majestic youth between adversity

    Who did not earn recognition with praise

  46. وحاجةٍ دافَعَ عنْ نَيْلِها

    وَجْهٌ حَيِيٌّ وزَمانٌ وَقاحْ

    And a need whose fulfillment

    A vivacious face, an indecent time prevented

  47. وحاذَرَ المِنَّةَ منْ باخِلٍ

    فطلَّقَ المِنْحَةَ قبلَ النِّكاح

    And avoided obligation from a miser

    So he rejected gifts before marriage
