1. أدر المدامة بيننا يا ساقي

    حتى تكل يدي ويضعف ساقي

    Turn the wine between us, O cupbearer,

    Until my hand is paralyzed and my feet weakened,

  2. واقرب إلى بخدّك الشرى الذي

    يزري بضوء الشمس في الأشراقِ

    And come closer to your rosy cheek

    That the sun's rays shine on at dawn,

  3. أو ما ترى برد النسيم وقد ونى

    سحرا وبرد الليل في أخلاقِ

    Or don't you see the cool breeze blowing

    Like magic and the night's chill in the horizon,

  4. والزهر سبط قد سقاه من الحيا

    ماء تجعد في متون سواقي

    The flowers are blooming, watered

    From the river, curling in eddies,

  5. والأقحوان ند يضاحك نرجسا

    ساهي الجفون محدق الأحداقِ

    Narcissus laughs, drunk, winking

    At hyacinth, languid-eyed and staring,

  6. فانهض إلى ذهبية لهبية

    كالماء مشعلة بلا أحراقِ

    So get up to the golden, flame-like beauty

    Ablaze without burning,

  7. لمعت وراء القارلي فحسبتها

    شفقا ثوى غسقا من الأعغساقِ

    She shone behind the veil so I thought her

    The sunset glow beyond the horizon,

  8. يا سعد أسعد من تحمل ضعفه

    ثقل الهوى فأطاق غير مطاقِ

    O Saad, happiest is he who can bear his passion

    The burden of love, though intolerable,

  9. لا تنشرن له المنزل فإنه

    يطوى الضلوع على حشا خفلتاقِ

    Do not pitch tents for him, for he

    Folds his ribs over the hot sands,

  10. فنكت به الأضداد نار أضرمت

    في ماء خد مائر قران

    Contradictions have tortured him - fire kindled

    In the water of his cheek, death

  11. وفاغر ثغر واسوداد غدائر

    وموت خلخال ونطق نطاقِ

    Of his anklets' bells and the talk of his tatters,

    O sellers of their poems in the market

  12. يا بائعي أشعارهم في سوقه

    الشعر فيهم كسد الأسواقِ

    Poetry for them is the decline of markets,

    Guard your faces from faces

  13. صونوا وقلق وجوهكم عن أوجه

    منقورة نقر الصخور صفاقِ

    Carved and sculpted like chiselled rocks,

    They were created rude, would that they learn

  14. قوم إذا سيق المديح إليهم

    ألفيتهم في كربة وسياقِ

    The virtues of manners and etiquette,

    The potter folds the branches of his clay

  15. خلقوا الجفاة فليتهم من يزدن

    يتعلمون مكارم الأخلاقِ

    Pure creator displaying his wares,

    The vagrant has taken his beauty captive

  16. ملتف أغصان الفخار إذا أنتمى

    زاكي النجار مظهر لاأعراقِ

    And so they are, by that bondage, set free

    In his generosity and the beauty of his face

  17. أسر العفاة المقترين جميله

    فغدوا بذاك الأسر في إطلاقِ

    Lies the souls' comfort and the balm of hopes,

    Swords turn white in his hand when the war turns black

  18. في جود راحته ورونق بشره

    روح القلوب ومسكة الأرماقِ

    With spilled red blood,

    He still makes our sorrows steps

  19. تحمر في يده إذا اسودّ الوغى

    بيض السيوف من الدّم المهراقِ

    To those highest heights,

    You are still the full moon, star of the faith

  20. ما زال يجعل ما بنا من سؤدد

    درجا إلى تلك العلى ومراقي

    And the new crescent of the tyrant's defeat,

    You are life - if you are angered, ruined

  21. لا زلت نجم الدين بدرا كاملا

    وعدول الباغي هلال محاقِ

    Are those you have abandoned without recourse,

    In your wealth you have each day a new battle

  22. أنت الحياة فإن أُهِجتَ فحية

    من ساورته فما له من راقِ

    Whose dawn shows you victorious by nightfall,

    If base men offend, your hands suffice

  23. لك في ثرائك كل يوم وقعة

    بكر تريك عشية التحلاقِ

    To be the key to sustenance,

    True are the praises we give him and so with him

  24. إن ارتجت لؤما أكفّ معاشر

    كانت يداك مفاتح الأرزاقِ

    They are honoured and rewarded,

    The days have not erred in favouring him

  25. صدقت مدائحنا فأضحت عنده

    ربات صدى عاليات صدافِ

    But truly he prevailed and deserved to rule,

    A lion even leopards fear his might

  26. لم تغلط الأيام في تسويده

    لكن بحق ساد واستحقاقِ

    And leopards fear the baring of his fangs,

    In his generosity at Babylon he is like

  27. أسد يخاف الليث سطوة بأسه

    واليث طاو أهرت الأشداق

    A streaming river across all horizons,

    Thus his glowing face is like the dawn

  28. في بابل أضحى بجود سائر

    متدفق في سائر الأفاقِ

    Shining in every Levant and Iraq,

    O sun of his state, Hashimite, take this ode

  29. فلذاك قد أضحى لبارق بشره

    في كل شام شائم وعراقِ

    Which will outlive time, enduring for you

    Like a meadow pleased by pouring rain

  30. يا شمس دوله هاشم خذ مدحة

    يفنى الزمان وذوها لك باقِ

    And doused by showers from thick clouds,

    And greet him - for you have become lord of achievements

  31. كالروض راضته السحائب ثرة

    وسرت عليه بوابل غيداقِ

    With wreaths still garlanding necks,

  32. واسلم فقد أصبحت رب صنائع

    ما إن تزال قلائد الأعناقِ
