1. تبدى يملأ الناظر

    بمثل الغصن الناضر

    Her beauty fills the beholder’s eye

    Like a blossoming branch,

  2. بشعر فاحم اللون

    أثيث يفحم الشاعر

    With hair black as pitch,

    Adorning the poet.

  3. وثغر مثلما طلّ

    أقاح بحيا باكر

    Lips like the rising moon

    When dawn breaks.

  4. يضوع العنبر الورد

    إذا مر بنا عابر

    The scent of roses wafts

    When she passes by.

  5. بنفسي قمرا راح

    للبي في الهوى قامر

    I gambled my soul

    Crazy with love for her.

  6. تناساني على البعد

    وما زلت له ذاكر

    You forget me from afar

    Yet still I remember you.

  7. ومذ أخرعني الوص

    ل لي ليل بلا آخر

    Since love left me raving

    I have no restful night.

  8. صدوق بمطال الوع

    د إلف للجفا غادر

    True to the pact of love

    I remain, though abandoned.

  9. على لامي عذاريه

    غدا اللائم لي عاذر

    For her sake, the critic

    Has become my defender.

  10. غزال حرك الوجد

    بقلبي لحظه الفاتر

    A gazelle stirred in my heart

    A moment of weakness.

  11. إلا يا طرفه الساح

    ر ناصف طرفي الساهر

    But your mischievous glance,

    Keeps my eyes awake.

  12. فما واصل جفني النو

    م مذ أصبح لي هاجر

    Not a wink of sleep

    Since you left me.

  13. إلا لله أيام

    ي إذ نحن على حاجر

    Only days with God

    While we're on the precipice.

  14. وقد غاب عن الواشي

    ن سرا بيننا حاضر

    The secret between us

    Hid from the spy.

  15. وحوراء سقيط الدم

    ع في وجنتها جائر

    A houri, whose blood is pure

    Sinning in her cheek.

  16. غدت تلحي على العدم

    وحظ في العنى قاصر

    You incline toward nothingness

    With luck insufficient.

  17. وأنّى يفر الوفر

    لخرق جوده وافر

    How can grace abound

    With your perfect generosity?

  18. ذريني من أذى الدهر

    وجور الفلك الدائر

    Leave me from the harms of fate

    And the circuit of the spheres,

  19. فما أخذل والصاح

    ب مجد الدين لي ناصر

    For my defender of the faith

    Brings me endless victory.

  20. سحاب يمطر التبر

    وبحر باللهى زاخر

    A cloud that rains generosity,

    An ocean full of piety.

  21. كريم العود ماء الجو

    د من راحته قاطر

    Noble, ever-flowing,

    From his palm, water flows forth.

  22. شريف القول والفعل

    رهيف العزم والخاطر

    Noble in word and deed,

    Lofty in will and thought.

  23. إذا سيل ندى جاء

    كسيل اللجة الغامر

    When the torrent of his munificence flows

    Like a surging, billowing flood.

  24. هو العامر بالإحسا

    ن ربع الكرم الداثر

    He populates the land with kindness

    In place of tyranny and wrong.

  25. له العدل الذي استأص

    ل ظلم القاسط الجائر

    He holds the standard of justice that replaces

    The injustice of the oppressor.

  26. إلى الراي الذي راي

    قصير معه قاصر

    Beside his leadership, others

    Seem small and insignificant.

  27. إذا سد الفضا النقع

    غدا كالأسد الخادر

    When the wide expanse is folded up,

    He rises like a roaring lion.

  28. يمير السيف من هام ال

    أعادي بدم مائر

    Swords shine from the necks

    Of his enemies, dripping blood.

  29. جواد يمنح العافي

    ويعفوا أبدا قادر

    He pardons forever, able to forgive,

    Bestowing well-being.

  30. وصدر يحمد الورا

    د منه الورد والصادر

    A breast that praises offspring,

    Wherein blooms every flower.

  31. ولود الكف للرفد

    وكم تلفى يد عاقر

    A palm that gives plenty to the deprived -

    How many a barren hand has he revived!

  32. له راتب معروف

    غدا من حاتم نادر

    He has a known, habitual generosity -

    He surpasses Hatem al-Ta'i's fame.

  33. وجدوى راحة أصب

    ح كعب عندها مادر

    He brings tranquility and rest,

    Where before was toil and turmoil.

  34. وقيل لم يزل فينا

    مقيلا زلة العاثر

    It is said that in our midst,

    He straightens the slip of the stumbler.

  35. إذا بشر بالوفد

    غدا مبتسما باشر

    When he greets guests,

    His smile beams radiant.

  36. طليق الوجه إن كل

    ح وجه الباخل الباسر

    His face shines bright, while

    The miser's face scowls.

  37. يرى في الجدب والحرب ال

    لَتي عثيرها ثائر

    In drought and war alike,

    He sees the testing that tries men's souls,

  38. شهابا يحرق الذمر

    وشؤبوب حيا ماطر

    A flaming meteor,

    A rain-giving cloud.

  39. فمن عمرو القنا إن شد

    د بالسيف ومن عامر

    So who but Amr has restored

    Our mosque, and who but Amir?

  40. أيخفى يا أبا الفضل

    لدينا عرفك الظاهر

    Why hide, Abu al-Fadl,

    Your clear superiority amongst us?

  41. لقد فضلك الله

    وزكى عرقك الطاهر

    God has graced you

    And purified your noble lineage.

  42. فأنت العلم الهادي

    وطود الشرف الباهر

    You are the guiding knowledge,

    The lofty, brilliant honor.

  43. فما يكسر صرف الده

    ر من أنت له جابر

    Fate's caprice breaks

    Against you, its repairer.

  44. كما لا تجبر الأيّا

    م من أنت له كاسر

    Just as no era can be mended

    Save by you, its breaker.

  45. ملكت الحر من قولي

    فأصبحت به ظافر

    I have held my peace against you

    And so stand victorious.

  46. فمنك الوفر والكام

    ل مني لك والوافر

    For from you comes grace, perfection -

    And from me, to you, all favor.

  47. أراني للذي أولي

    تني من منن شاكر

    Behold me thanking abundantly

    Those who have shown me kindness.

  48. ولا والله يطوي

    ندى شكري له ناشر

    By God, my gratitude to them

    Spreads far and wide!

  49. فمن يكفر معروف

    ك من أهل الدنا كافر

    Whoever refuses your bounty

    Is an ingrate, faithless wretch.

  50. وقد أنحى دعا الأم

    ة باديهم مع الحاضر

    You have summoned the leaders of the people -

    Present and absent alike -

  51. بأن تبقى لهم ظلا

    وأن يبقى لك الناصر

    To pray your shadow remain over them

    As you remain their helper.
