O tell the swaying raincloud:
I made the fire weep, if it would not weep for me,
and left no tears for the ruined camps—
tears parting renews in the udders of my eyelids.
And you have stolen, O bān trees of Salʿ,
that composure from the fair one, for my sake.
Whenever she looks toward me, wary,
she shows me health in a glance that wastes me away.
How often I defy reproach for loving her,
yet reap no love from her unjust disdain.
When she smiles, she shows you pearls in a strand;
when she sways, she shows you a bough’s form.
It is as though I had not confined my delight in her
to a full moon in darkness and a sun behind cloud.
I have known no excellence among comely chiefs
above that rare one among the chiefs of Ḥazn;
nor al-Muqarrab, who in generosity
and prowess stands above ʿAntarah and Maʿn—
a youth of firmly tempered judgment, who bestows
his gifts upon the petitioner and raises him high.
I profited on the morning I sold all creation
for the passion of being his, though I lost self-sufficiency.
If the watering places fail, he is my watering place;
if I fear calamities, he is my safety.
His cheerful face brings his petitioners glad tidings
of a gift no reminder of favor will cloud.
I sought his ample protection when
I knocked, though my years had turned elsewhere—
a full moon beneath whose shelter the guest takes refuge,
a sea accustomed to slaughtering fat camels.
When the night of battle-dust blackens, he is my protector
with a brown, supple spear from al-Khaṭṭ.
O my lord Baktamur, the hoped-for one,
entrust me to no generosity but yours.
How often you have proved a slanderer’s words about me false,
and how often through kindness confirmed my expectation.
For I am close to you in lineage;
leave verse’s lineage aside—you are of me.
Succeed to glory: truly, you are the finest successor;
companion of munificence, you are the finest companion.
If time diminishes my allotted shares,
increase me from your generosity—then increase me again.
You will find no one like me to spread
your praise throughout the lands; do not cast me aside.
Nor am I one who, whenever he composes verse,
merely supplies it with rhyme and meter,
without entering an unfamiliar meaning
and bringing it forth as art—then sing it.
How often through kindness you have made me independent of all
beyond myself—and may this claim be excused: it suffices.
May you remain among us through life’s long course,
far-reaching in glory, enriching and endowing.
