1. رام بي أنني حصاة قذاف

    واشف هماً ما إن له اليوم شاف

    I wished I was a stone thrown by a slinger

    To alleviate a worry that has no relief today

  2. واستعر لي إن شئت ضدا فإني

    ليس ضدي كفوا فمن ذا اكافي

    Borrow me a grudge if you wish, for I am not

    Equal to it, so who can suffice me?

  3. إن أكن قد خفيت عنهم فإن ال

    بدر يمسي عن أعين الكنة خاف

    If I have been hidden from them, the

    Full moon becomes obscured to slit eyes at night

  4. وكذاك الدر اليتيم تراه

    أبدا يستكن في الأصدافِ

    Just like the lone pearl you see

    Always hiding in shells

  5. أو ما شعري الذي لم يزل ين

    شره في البلاد طي الفيافي

    Or is not my poetry which has not ceased dispersing

    Its fragrance in the lands, folding the banners

  6. هو أحلى من الخدود إذا

    أنبت فيها الحياء ورد القطافِ

    It is sweeter than the cheeks when

    Shyness has grown roses on them ready for plucking

  7. يتشافى به الرواة ومنه

    في قلوب الأعداء وخز الأشافي

    The reciters recover with it and with it

    Pricks the hearts of enemies and stabs the envious

  8. يا أعف الأنام يا عون دين ال

    له يا من غدا ملاذ العافي

    O most noble of people, O aid of the faith of

    God, O you who tomorrow becomes the refuge of the sound

  9. لم أسفسف منه مديحك فاسمع

    ه ولا تستمعن السفاسفِ

    I have not exaggerated your praise so listen

    To it and do not listen to the exaggerators

  10. معشر قد بليت منهم باجبا

    س ثقال ذوي رؤوس خفافِ

    A group whom I have tired from them with conversation

    As heavy as those with light heads

  11. حضرفيهم على حصر الأل

    سن في القول غلظة الأجلافِ

    Their nostrils over the reins of tongues

    Rough in speech, thickness of uncouthness

  12. كيف لا يجدون من خص باللط

    طف من الله والمعاني اللطافِ

    How do they not find in one endowed with kindness by God and subtle meanings

    One whose sea of ideas you see from his drawing depth

  13. من له بحر خاطر مثل جدوا

    ك تراه من نسيبه ذا اغترافِ

    O young man whose generosity doubles

    Asking and aiding the weak

  14. يا فتى دينه مضاعفة الجو

    د لسؤال ونصر الضعافِ

    I have become accustomed to benevolence from you so complete

    And take care of my matter before we meet

  15. قد ألفت الإحسان منك فتمّم

    وتلاف أمري قبيل تلاقي

    Whenever I glance away from you

    Words fail me and my eyelids betray me

  16. فمتى مالويت طرفات عني

    خانني القول والتنت أطرافي

    You promised me a long stay with you so trust in

    Me with the length of intent and determination

  17. أوعداني طول لديك فثق من

    سي بطول النمين والإيجافِ

    O young man at whose appearance hearts tremble

    When he charges into the midst of his armies

  18. يا فتى ترجف القلوب إذا أف

    بل في عرض جيشه الزحَّافِ

    The lightening flashes between the spears and the Yemeni swords

    Above which are the lineage of Dawood and another of piety and chastity

  19. تتهادى بد الكميت تهادى ال

    برق بين الأرماح والإسبافِ

    For you, fresh roses and a fertile expanse

    And a capacious companionship and shady shelter

  20. وعليه مسرودة نسب داو

    د وأخرى من التقى والعفافِ

    And a turning from approval, his ways ever provide you

    Contentment, not needing to seek favor

  21. لك ورد صاف وربع خصيب

    وجناب رحب وظل ضافِ

    You are one who publicized my poetry when it was

    Feeble, whom the winds blew upon

  22. وانعطاف من الرضا أبدا تغن

    نيك عاداته عن استعطافِ

    Do not name me with other than my name, for what displeased creation

    That I am lame in harmonizing

  23. أنت من انشر القريض وقد كا

    ن رميما تسفي عليه السوافي

    So reflect, even if my poetry were spurious

    Would I dazzle with it the assayer?

  24. لا تسمني بغير وسمي فما ين

    كر خلق أني عويق التوافي

    Or were I among the thieves, I would not have brought

    My complaint to the diviner

  25. فتأمل أو كان شعري زيفا

    لم ابهري به على الصرافِ

    Their aim in my absence is to distance me

    From you, O owner of dew, without doubt

  26. أولو اني من اللصوص لما جئ

    ت بكايتي إلى العرافِ

    No poet ever followed my tracks

    So repel the talk of those who slander behind my back

  27. قصدهم في تخلفي يبعدوني

    عنك يا ذا الندى بغير خلافِ

    And long life to one who becomes a rival

    Surpassing Amr in his running and lightness

  28. ليس يقفو لي شاعر قط أثرا

    فارم قول الواشين بي خلف قافِ

    You are the full moon of calamities, you still make them

    Radiant, and the fire of wars and hospitality

  29. وطويل لمن يكون سطيحا

    سبق عمرو في عدوه وخفافِ

    You loaned me your generosity, so take it

    Freely, O fulfiller of loans

  30. أنت بدر الخطوب لا زلت تجلو

    ها ونار الحروب ىوالأضيافِ

    Whenever I repeat it to listeners

    It has the effect of magic on minds

  31. أنت أسلفتني السماح فخذها

    حرة يا مقابل الأسلافِ

    The storytellers sing it, and it provides

    Relief from meeting loved ones and the thousands

  32. كلما كررت على سامعيها

    فعلت بالعقول فعل السلاف

    Not like the poetry of those who, when they recite,

    Amidst summer, one feels the coolness

  33. يتغنى بها الحداة وتغني

    عن لقاء الأحباب والآلاف

    Except for your vast delegations, which still

    Remain spacious, hosting multitudes

  34. لا كأشعار من إذا أنشدوها

    وسط آب حست بالنفناف

  35. لا عدا ربعك الوفود ولا

    زال رحيبا موطاّ الأكناف
