علاك من النوائب في أمان
وجارك والكواكب في مكان
You are protected from misfortunes,
With your neighbor and the stars in place.
وأنت أحن من مدت إليه
يسار السؤل أو يمنى الأماني
You are kinder than one who extends
The left of request or the right of wishes.
يعودك عاد عود الجود غضا
وأصعبت المنى بعد الحرانِ
May your generosity return as it began,
And may wishes come easy after hardship.
وأضحى الشعر غالي السعر جدا
وكان يباع في سوى الهوان
Poetry has become very expensive,
It was once sold for mere pittance.
سمعنا بالندى خيراً فلما
سمحت بدا لنا نظر العيان
We heard good tidings ofdew, but when
You allowed, the sight was revealed to us.
إذا ادخر الهجين لهاه لؤما
بذلت سجيه الحرق الهجان
When the unlucky hoard their misfortune,
You spend your bounty dispelling distress.
عليما أن كنز الحمد باق
عليك وأن ما تحويه فانِ
Knowing that the treasure of praise is eternal
Upon you, and what you contain perishes.
أنأ مل أيديا خلقت جعادا
وفينا راحتك السبطتان
My hands did not create pleading,
In you rests our comfort, O two rivers!
حلفت بأن نون الدين معنى
بأسر محامد وفكاك عاني
I swear the noon of religion means
Freeing fettered praises and relieving agonies.
فزاريّ المناسب حاتمي الس
سماح العدّ قسيّ البيان
Visiting when appropriate, decisive when
Generous, eloquent in speech.
يرجى حين تسأله ويخشى
ويصرف بأسه صرف الرمان
Hopeful when asked, and fearful,
Deflecting harm as arrows deflected.
كريم الخيم محمود السجايا
شجاع القلب واليد واللسانِ
Noble, praiseworthy, courageous of heart,
Hand, and tongue. Dignified, though spirits raged,
وقور الجأ عن أن طاشت حلوم
أبان من الرزانة عن إبانِ
Signaling composure at all times.
When the horizon darkens, a glowing
إذا اسودَّ الفضا أبصرت منه
مضىء العزم مضَّاء الجانِ
Resolve and bright essence is seen in him.
Firm and sound of judgment, he is aided
شديد البأس ذا رأي سديد
يعان به على الحرب العوانِ
Against wars by the helper.
He protects and swords drip blood,
يحامي والأسنة داميات
ويحمي العرض بالعرض المهانِ
Shielding honor with dishonored blood.
One day his generosity and war intertwined,
فيوما جوده والحرب يلفى
سنيّ الوفد مخضوب السنانِ
Gray delegations came bloodstained.
He prepared for every serpent a thorn
أعد لكل داهية ناد
ويوم ذي خطوبأرونانِ
And a day of great tribulations.
Dark, he raged against the masters of barren sands
أسود وغى على سيدان قفر
لها غاب من السمر اللّدانِ
Until the red hillocks hid.
He made them pale with piercing white blades
فأشقره من الهبوات جون
وأبيضه من الخهجات قانِ
And strikes of straight sword.
He severed the rope of love for one who severs his
أغر ممر حبل الودّ حلو
لخاطب رفده مر الطّعانِ
Sweetly addressing his foeman’s blade.
He forgave by his nobility the offender, and picked
عفا كرما عن الجاني وأدنى
قطوف ن نداه من يد كل جانِ
Ripe fruits with the palms of every rebel.
No torrents deterred him, no plains or passes,
فما سيل نسخَّطه الموامي
وتحمده النقائع والمجاني
He rose high, and I saw a wave
More radiant and faced than old tatters,
تسنم فارعا فرأيت موجا
كأسنمة المخرَّمةِ الهجانِ
My ecstasy and retainers are two rivers!
By the weight of them my feast gained credence,
بأندى من أخلاقا ووجها
لمستجد وحاشيتي بنان
And I surrendered, worthy of gifts and congratulations.
فعن وزنهن عشر العيد وأسلم
جديرا بالمدائع والتهاني
