لا جفا البرق منزلا بالبراق

وسقاه من صيّب المزن ساقي

The lightning did not take the shining meadow as residence

And the cupbearer watered it with pure wine

فلقد كان موسما للصبابا

ت وانسا للهائم المشتاق

It was certainly a season for youth

And a companion for longing hearts

حيث شمل الفريق ما أصبح الده

ر له مؤذنا بوشك فراق

Where the group met what the next day's dawn

Became its caller for near separation

والمغاني غنية بشموس

قد فضلن الشموس في الأشراقِ

And the singers sang with suns

The suns excelled in rising

كالظبي أعينا يرينك أعنا

ق ظباء مخلوقة للعناقِ

Like a gazelle its eyes make you see gazelles

Gazelles created for embrace

كل خود تعذب المغرم الصب

ب بعذب من ثغرها البراقِ

Every cheek tortures the lover

With a sweetness from its shining smile

تنثنى تثني الغصن الأهيف

راق العيون بالإيراقِ

It bends and bends the tender branch

Beguiling the eyes with its glimpse

أوسعتني صدا فخدَّت الخد

د دموع تضيق عنها المآقي

You have widened me, so my cheek became wet

With tears too narrow for it

أكثر العاذلون فيها ولكن

خرسوا عند نطق ذاك النطاقِ

Most of the passionate ones about it but

Fell silent at the speaking of that speaker

بعدت سلوتي يلها بعد ما

بين عفاة الوزير والإملاق

My tranquility departed it after what was

Between the toes of the minister and exertion

ملك تبصر الملوك له الصي

د خشوعا خواضع الأعناق

A sovereign you see sovereigns

Bow to it humbly with necks lowered

معرق في الفخار طاب أصولا

وفروعا كريمة الأعراق

A stallion bred well

Both roots and branches noble bred

واهب البدن الخرائد والبدن

هجانا والصافنات العتاق

Giver of the worn-out body and the body

Virile and defiant the emancipated

مطعم الضيف خاضب الرمح والسي

ف لدى الروع بالدم المهراق

Feeder of guest, reddener of spear and sword

When frightened with blood hot and flowing

كسروى موفق الحل والعق

د وفي بالعهد والميثاق

Like Kisra successful in resolving and contracts

And in keeping promises and covenants

شاد ما شاده الرفيل من المج

د وأحيا من ذكره فهو باقي

He built what the vile destroyed

And revived what his mention of it remains

نشر الجود في الورى وطوى ال

جور بعدل قد سار في الآفاق

Spread generosity in existence and folded

Injustice with justice that went into horizons

أغلق الرزق دوننا فوجدنا

في يديه مفاتح الأرزاقِ

Closed sustenance from us, so we found

In his hands keys to livelihoods

رب جود غض إذا اخلق ال

جود وغاضت مكارم الأخلاقِ

Lord of generosity frown if generosity sulked

And generosity of morals was veiled

وإلى ضوء بشره طوت العي

س بنا كل قاتم الأعماقِ

And to the light of his good tidings the gloom bent

Over us all the dark depths

نلاقي من جوده الجم بحرا

ساقت المجتي إليه السواقي

We meet from his generosity a plentiful sea

Brought by carriers to him running

ترتوي الأنفس العطاش يعدّ

راق من صفو مائه الرقراقِ

Thirsty souls are quenched, counting

Smooth from its delicate water elite

ليث حرب ضار إذا شبت ال

حرب وغيث شؤبوبه ذو اندفاقِ

Lion of war, harmful when war raged

And rain whose downpour is rushing

مصدر البيض قانيات كان قد

كسيت خجلة الخدود الرقاق

Source of whites their cheeks were clad

With blushing of delicate cheeks

كفه بالنوال اسمح للعا

فين من صوب واكف غيداق

His palm is smooth to the weak

From a side and prevents tyranny

ثبتت في رقابنا من نداه

عارفات أبقى من الأطواق

In our necks from his help established

More lasting recognitions than shackles

لم يسد غلظة ولكن بحق

واجب لم يزل وباستحقاقِ

Not harshness made him close but a right

And duty not ceasing and by merit

راتق فاتق وما أبهر المل

ك وأبهى بالفاتق الرتاقِ

Pure and pious, not dazzled a king

Nor amazed with the extremely pure

عد شكر الرجال من خير ذخر

ورآه من أنفس الأعلاقِ

Considering gratitude of men from best treasure

And saw it from the most high qualities

عضد الدين دعوة من ولي

خالص الود غير ما مذاقِ

Supporter of religion, a prayer from a loyal

Friend of pure affection not tasted

أنت خولتني النفيس من الوف

ر ونفست منعما من خناقي

You made me possess the exquisite from honor

And I was blessed with respite from my noose

وتداركتني برفدك لما

كنت من اسرفاقتي في وثاقِ

And you rescued me with your assistance when

I was from my prodigality in fetters

فسآتيك بالقوافي الجليلا

ت تهادى بين المعاني الدقاقِ

So I will come to you with sublime rhymes

Swaying between the subtle meanings

وأسوق القريض نحوك إذ كا

ن بناديك نافق الأسواقِ

And lead the poem to you when calling you

Honest in markets frequented

وأزف الثناء صدقا على مج

دك يا مجزلا له في الصداقِ

And bring praise in truth upon your glory

O fulfiller of it in friendship

أخفق المجتدي سواك ومن رجا

ك في مأمن من الإخفاقِ

The aspiring faltered but you and whoever hoped

In you is safe from faltering

فالق ما شئت من منى وابق فينا

مستماحا عمر الليالي البواقي

Decide what you wish of purpose and leave in us

Asking long life for remaining nights
