1. طلولَ الحي جادتك الطلال

    ومدت فوق دمنتك الظلالُ

    The heights of life made you tall,

    And its shadows stretched over your abode,

  2. ولا برحت دموع الغيث تهمي

    عليك وذيل مزنتها مذالُ

    The rain tears did not cease pouring over you,

    With its dragging tail sweeping down.

  3. ففي مغناك تاب الهجر مما

    جناه وطاب من سعدي الوصالُ

    So your love cured the estrangement caused

    By what it had reaped, and the joy of my union flourished,

  4. مهفهفة لها قد نبيل

    وأجفان لواحظها نبال

    Swaying with charm and grace,

    And eyelids whose gaze is piercing.

  5. صموت الحجل تشرقني بدمعي

    وتشرق صين تبتسم الحجالُ

    The silence of night illuminates me with my tears,

    And the brilliance of the Full Moon smiles through the darkness.

  6. بدت ورنَت اليّ على اتقاءٍ

    فغاب البدر وارتاب الغزالُ

    She appeared to me with modesty and pride,

    So the moon set and the gazelle was startled.

  7. أيجمل بي سماع العذل فيها

    وقد سفرت وبرقعها الجمالُ

    How beautiful she looks when I hear her singing,

    As she has travelled and her beauty stayed veiled.

  8. تريك مقبلا عذبا لماه

    ووجها في شبيبته اقتبالُ

    You see me approaching her gently,

    With a face still grasping its youth.

  9. وحوراء المدامع ذات طرف

    صحيح في تغزله اعتلالُ

    And a doe-eyed damsel whose eyelash

    Is still flexing coquettishly when it flirts.

  10. تجور ولا تجير إذا تثنت

    عليك بقامة فيها اعتدالُ

    She is wayward but cannot be blamed

    When she sways with a body of perfect poise.

  11. تذل محبها وتدل حسنا

    عليه وآفة الحسن الدلالُ

    She humbles her lover and shows her beauty,

    While the flaw of beauty is to be vain.

  12. وقفت علي مغانيها ركابي

    أسائلها وما يغني السؤالُ

    I stopped at her songs, questioning,

    But questioning is fruitless.

  13. وقد نشأت من الأجفان سحب

    خفاف عندها السحب الثقالُ

    Clouds had risen from her eyelids,

    Light clouds where heavy ones prevail.

  14. وخرق قد خرقت باعوجي

    نجي لا يلم به الكلالُ

    My camel, worn out by me, was patched

    Where no patches could hold.

  15. يكاد إذا تدفق في جراء

    تشب على سنابكه الذبالُ

    It nearly caught fire when it galloped

    With its reins aflame.

  16. فأربعة يقال هي الصبا

    والدبور هي النعامى والشمالُ

    As if she were the morning in her prime,

    The ostriches, the antelopes and the North wind.

  17. إذا انطلقت فهن بكل ريم

    وجازئة تجوز بها عقالُ

    When she breaks loose she outruns them all,

    A winner unmatched in her vigor.

  18. إلى المولى أبي الفرج المرجى

    فذاك مآل ذي أمل ومالُ

    To my Master Abu Al-Faraj Al-Arjee

    For he is the destination of hopes and wealth.

  19. يضيق بنا مجال الرزق حتى

    نوافيه فيتسع المجالُ

    The means of livelihood straiten around us

    Until we come to him, and space widens.

  20. ونشرع في مدائحه فنطغى

    ويمكننا إذا قلنا المقالُ

    We take up praising him and are immersed,

    And he enables us when we speak.

  21. بشير للعفاة بما رجوه

    لديه بشره العذب الزلالُ

    Giving good news to the destitute of what they hope for through him,

    Give them the good news of fresh soft water.

  22. ورفد رائق ما فيه مطل

    إذا ما الرفد كدره المطالُ

    A pleasing draft that fulfills wishes

    When the draft is troubled with demands.

  23. يصوب ندى إذا الأنواء ضنت

    ويقدم أن تأخرت الرجالُ

    He directs soft rain when the skies are miserly,

    And he gives before men do.

  24. له حزم يسود به وعزم

    طرير مثل ما شحذت نصالُ

    He has resolve with which he leads,

    And sharp-witted wisdom like sharpened swords.

  25. وعلم مثل ما انفجرت بحار

    وحلم مثل ما ثبتت جبالُ

    And knowledge like bursting seas,

    And patience like mountains firm.

  26. حلفت إليه بمنى وجمع

    وما يحويه من شرف الألُ

    I swore to him by Mina and the multitudes

    It contains, and by their noble blood.

  27. ووفد الله ما رميت جمار

    بأيديهم وما دميت جمالُ

    That you, son of Abdullah, my Master

    Were gifted their merits and refinement.

  28. بأنك يا ابن عبدالله مولى

    صفت منه المواهب والخلالُ

    Every day for him is one of clamoring

    Fires of war raging violently.

  29. له في كلّ يوم مكفهرّ

    لنيران الحروب به اشتعالُ

    Armor like pouring rain,

    And lances dripping with the blood of the slain.

  30. دروع مثل ما مطرت نهاء

    وسمر من دم القتلى نهالُ

    His horses march into every narrow strait

    Too narrow for imagination to tread.

  31. وتسلكَ خيله في كل فجٍّ

    مضيقا ليس يسلكه الخيالُ

    So, supporter of religion and life, O you

    Who attains what none other attains.

  32. فيا عضد الدنا والدين يا من

    ينال برأيه مالا ينالُ

    Your help is beyond counting,

    And how can sand be counted?

  33. نداك العد ما ليس يحصى

    وكيف تعد أ تحصى الرمالُ

    Behold! O son of the exalted, your origins are pure

    And you attained the highest ranks and lasted long.

  34. ألا يا ابن الألى طابوا أصولا

    ونالوا الفرقدينعلى وطالوا

    Warriors when the executioner attacked them,

    Champions when the contention intensified.

  35. مصاول حين يدهمهم جلاد

    مقاول حين يحتد الجدالُ

    I am not your permanent dweller, I must depart,

    And these words are not mine to keep.

  36. محل لست ساكنه محيل

    وقول لست قائله محالُ

    We see you sometimes gentle, sometimes stern,

    In you is clemency and punishment altogether.

  37. نراك تلين أحيانا وتقسو

    ففيك العفو أجمع والنكالُ

    You cared for the orphan so you are his family,

    And apart from you, others are false kin.

  38. تداركت الوحيد فأنت آل

    له وسواك للظآن آلُ

    When generosity becomes a habit,

    Yours surpasses that habit and excels.

  39. إذا ما الجود أضحى وهو خدّ

    فجودك فوق ذاك الخد خالُ

    So celebrate and defeat the enemies, and submit

    To the eternal kingdom that will never decline.

  40. فعيدوانحر الأعداء واسلم

    لملك ما له أبدا زوالُ

    Vow sincerely that you are nothing but

    The right hand of glory while people are the left.

  41. فاقسم صادقا ما أنتت إلاّ

    يمين المجد والناس الشمالُ

    So hopes raced towards you hastily,

    And your glories never halted the racers.

  42. فسارت نحوك الآمال عجلى

    ولاوقفت مكارمك العجالُ
