بأي لسان للوشاة ألام

وقد علموا أني سهرت وناموا

With what tongue do the slanderers have pain

When they knew I was awake while they slept

أهيم وما أظهرت في الحببدعة

ولو انهم ذاقوا الغرام لهاموا

Do I utter any innovation in love?

Had they tasted passion, they would be confused

هل العشق إلا لوعة مستكنة

ينم عليها زفرة وغرامُ

Is love not but hidden anguish

Upon which sighs and passion sleep?

الأم على حبّي وهو مبرح

وأكبر برح في هواك ملامُ

My mother blames my love while it is innocent

Yet the greatest innocence in your love is blame

أيستكثرون الوصل لي منك ليلةً

وقد مر عام بالصدود وعامُ

Do they consider one night with you too much for me

When a year has passed with rejection and a year

يكلفين أن لا أرى الغدر شيمة

غاسلو وداد صادف وذمامَ

They charge me not to see betrayal as a trait

While they wash away affection if it is found

كأن علي العشق ضربة لا زم

وما هو إلا للكريم لزامُ

It is as if love is an inevitable affliction for me

Yet it is but an obligation for the noble

ومائله العطفين من نشرة الصبا

لها صحة في طرفها وسقامُ

The cheek that turns from the blowing of the breeze

In it is health and in its glances, sickness

يخجل منها الأقحوان مقبل

ويروي بخوط الخيزران قوامُ

It embarrasses the oxen when facing it

And the gazelles narrate its body’s perfection

أعانقها سرا فيظهر سرنا

وشاح له بين الوشاة كام

I secretly embrace it so our secret appears

My cloak over it shields it from the slanderers

على أن بردينا وقد برد الثرى

عناق وضم واللثام لثامُ

Though our embrace is cold and the ground is cold

An embrace, a hug, and the veil, a veil

أحن إذا فاحت من الغور نفحة

وناحت بأعلى الدوحتين حمامُ

I sigh when a breeze blows from the dens

And doves moan atop the hill

وبيد أيدناها بعنس كأنها

إذا نفحت ريح السموم سمام

And I stroke its hand with meadowsweet as if

When the poisonous winds blow, it is healing

طلائح أمثال القسي يحثها

رجال كأمثال السهام سهامُ

Chargers the likes of arrows speed them

Men the likes of arrows, arrows

لها عند عون الذين ذي الطول

مربع جميم وأمواه تسيل جمامُ

It has, in the help of those with height

A square jim and flowing robes

ولو لم نقدها نحوه لاستقادها

له سائق من جوده وزمامُ

Had we not guided it to him, its guidance

Would have come from his generosity and lead

هو المرء أما ماله فيحلل

مباح وأما عرضه فحرامُ

The man, as for his money, it is permitted

And as for his honor, inviolable

أتى فعلى دار السلام سلامة

بمقدمه مستبشرا وسلامُ

He came, so peace upon the house of peace

With his arrival giving good news and greetings

وعاد إليها صبحها ولقد غدا

بها الصبح لما سار وهو ظلامُ

And he returned to it, its morning, though to it

Morning had come while still dark

يذوذ به الجاني فيدنو مناله

ويحمي حماه والصفوف قيامُ

The offender approaches his attainment

And protects his protector while the ranks stand

أشم رزين الحلم تحسب أنه

إذا ما احتبى وسط النّديّ شمامُ

I detect the fragrance of wisdom and assume it is

A priceless gem amidst the assemblies

منيع الحمى لو رام أدرك جده

من النجم لم يبعد عليه مرامُ

Inaccessible is its protection, if the resolute

Wanted to attain their ancestors’ glory

عصام اليتامى والأرامل حجرة

وناهيك منه حجرة وعصامُ

A fortress for the orphans and widows, and needless to say

For them a fortress and a protector

خفي مرامي الكيد باتت تدلنا

عليه عطايا لا تعب جسامُ

The cunning plots against us have come to reveal

Through gifts that spare no effort

ينام وراء الثار ولم يزل

بعين وراء الثأر ليس تنامُ

He sleeps behind vengeance and has never

With an eye on vengeance ceased to be awake

وما ذاك إلا أنه متيقظ

تضام الرواسي وهو ليس يضامُ

That is only because he is vigilant

The foundations are strong and he is unshakable

الست من القوم الذين وجوههم

بدور وأيديهم حمى وحمام

Are you not of the people whose faces

Are full moons and their hands protectors?

أعدوا لأسباب الردى كل سابح

عليه غلام للمتون غلامُ

They prepared for the causes of evil every swimmer

Upon whom a youth for the waves, a youth

يناط بأعراف النجوم لجامه

ويجري فيلقى الأرض منه حزامُ

His cup is tied to the constellations

And it runs spilling its belt upon the ground

وموضونة كالماء أرعد متنه

وفض عليه للنسيم ختامُ

With a polished surface like water, its waves

And for it the breeze’s conclusion

واسمر سكران المهزة يلتقي

شطاط بأعلى عوده وعرامُ

A brown one intoxicated sways, meeting

The crown of its peg and its head

حسامك يا يحيى الوزير منية

ورأيك يا تاج الماوك حسامُ

Your sword, O Yahya the minister, is blessed

And your view, O crown of the kings, a sword

أفي كل يوم أنت قائد جحفل

تروم به الأعداء وهو لهامُ

Each day, are you not leader of an army

With which you can defeat the enemy that covets

لهم منه في الأقدام ما بصروا به

نفار وفي الأحجام عنه زحامُ

You grant them from it in the feet what they have seen

Scattering, and in the bodies, from it crowding

يسوفهم مثل السوام جوامحا

إلى كل سوق للحمام

It drives them like cattle, ferociously

To every market of the doves

لقد عرقتني بالعراق نوائب

ولولاك لم تبعد علي شآم

The tribulations in Iraq made me sweat

And were it not for you, Syria would not be far

ووالله لانكبت عنك معزبا

ولو جب مني غارب وسنامُ

By God, I would not have abandoned you

Even if separation was imposed on me

وهيهات أن أنسى نداك وبلدة

بها نبتت لي جلدة وعظام

Never will I forget your help and country

In which skin and bones for me grew

لقد حل منك المجد في مستقره

فلا حُلّ منه ما حييت نظامُ

Glory from you came to its proper place

So no glory will depart as long as order exists
