1. تمكن حب علوة من فؤادي

    وزاد فزال عن عيني رقادي

    The love of Alwah has taken hold of my heart,

    And increased, so sleep has departed from my eye,

  2. وعاودني الغرام فبت صبّا

    كأن بمضجعي شوك القتادِ

    And passion has returned to me, so I spend the night like one

    Whose bed is thorns and broken fragments.

  3. أحن إلى الحمى وأذاد عنه

    وفيه مراد لهوي بل مرادي

    I yearn for the fever and chatter about it,

    For in it is the wish of my passion, rather, my wish.

  4. وبيضاء الترائب والثنايا

    لها فرع دجوجي السوادِ

    And her white neck and breasts,

    For them a branch of my dark night.

  5. إذا مالاح منها الوجه فيه

    رأيت كمال بدر في دآدي

    When her face is unveiled, in it I see

    The perfection of a full moon in its renewal.

  6. كأن بثغرها سحرا مداما

    غدت ومزاجها نطف الغوادي

    As if in her mouth is an unending intoxication,

    And her constitution is the juice of plants.

  7. ويسكرها الصبا فتهز قدا

    كما اهتزت أنابيب الصعادِ

    The morning breeze intoxicates her, so she sways her body

    As my soul swayed.

  8. لئن هجرت ملالا لا دلالا

    وصدت صد مجتنب مصادي

    If she shunned me without kindness or affection,

    And was aloof with aloofness of one avoiding,

  9. فحيّا ربعها ربعي مزن

    وصاب عهودها صوب العهادِ

    Still, by her quarter my quarter is adorned,

    And her pledges point towards fulfillment.

  10. إذا ما فل جيش هوى سلو

    وقل غليل أحشاء صوادِي

    When the army of passion is routed

    And the anguish in my heart’s core subsides,

  11. فقلبي خافق أبدا لهاد

    وشوقي حاضر أبدا لبادي

    Still, my heart throbs forever for her,

    And my longing is always ready for her house.

  12. لئن لم أغد خل جوى ووجد

    أعد الغي فيه من الرشادِ

    If I do not become relaxed with her love and find

    In it counsel, in it is perversion from guidance.

  13. فقلت بأن للإحسان مولى

    سوى المولى أبي الفضل الجوادِ

    So I said that the Lord of Majesty

    Besides the Lord is my Master - Abu Al-Fadl Al-Jawad.

  14. أخي الآراء إن دهمت خطوب

    ومنتجع الورى الواري الزنادِ

    O you of lofty opinions, if calamities approach

    And the refuge of mankind, protector, dressed in armour,

  15. وطارد كل هم عن حمانا

    بضرب الهام في يوم الطرادِ

    Drive away every care from us

    By striking the foreheads on the day of hunting.

  16. ربيب مكارم وخدين مجد

    وخل سيادة وأخي سدادِ

    Beloved of noble deeds, cheeks of glory,

    Pure lineage, and brother of righteousness,

  17. إذا أبدى الندى كرما لوفد

    تداركه بإحسان معادِ

    If the clouds show kindness to a delegation

    He precedes them with benevolence and appointment.

  18. وإن ورد الوغى في يوم حرب

    رأيت البيض في حلل وِرادِ

    And if the turmoil comes on a day of war

    I see the white in robes and mantles,

  19. ومعروف ببذل العرف فينا

    وإسداء الصنائع والأيادي

    Known for benevolence among us

    And conferring favours and gifts,

  20. شأي في رأيه قيسا وأزرى

    بمنطقة على قس الأيادي

    My opinion in his opinion, like Qais and 'Uzra,

    With a belt upon the waist of the hands.

  21. له قلم نحيف الجسم نضو

    يقلم بادن النوب الشدادِ

    He has a slender pen, pure,

    That trims the nimble fingers of outstretched hands.

  22. إذا أجراه فوق الطرس يوما

    جرى قمنا بارزاق العبادِ

    If he runs it across paper one day,

    It flows with our sustenance, O servants.

  23. أمجد الدين مالك في انتقاص

    وشكرك في نمو وازدياديِ

    How excellent is your religion, Malik, in gain

    And your thanks in growth and increase!

  24. جعلت عتادك الإحسان لما

    رأيت الخير من خير العتادِ

    You have made your custom benevolence, for you

    Saw good from the best of customs.

  25. فما مثعنجر زجل دعته

    خريق فهو منخرق المزادِ

    So, no thunderer like a young lion whose

    Necklace was ripped - he is one whose collar is torn.

  26. كأن بروقه في الأفق وهنا

    بريق ظباك في يوم الجلادِ

    Its lightning in the horizon and yours here

    Is the gleam of your Indian sword on the day of unsheathing.

  27. ووقع رعوده في كل سمع

    صهيل خيولك الجرد الجيادِ

    And its peal falls on every ear

    The neighing of your swift purebred horses.

  28. وما أجراه من دفعات سيل

    عطاؤك للطريف وللتلادِ

    And what it sends forth of downpours

  29. بأندى منك للعافين كفا

    يذوب نداه في السَّنة الجمادِ

    Is your gift to the well-known and obscure.

    With one more generous than you, protecting

  30. بقيت رهيف حد العزم ثبتا

    رقود الحلم يقظان الفؤادِ

    Those safe, your generosity melts the inanimate.

    You remained gentle, firm of purpose, calm of slumber, vigilant of heart.

  31. ولا زالت بحورك في مدود

    تجيش وظل ملكك في امتدادِ

    And your seas are still surging in abundance,

    And the shadow of your kingdom still spreading.
