1. تبسم عن شبم كالأقاحي

    ورخم أَلفاظ نشوان صاحي

    He smiled with a smile like the crescent

    And his words flowed gently like a wakeful dawn

  2. وطاف علينا بعانيَّتين

    أسكرنا غنج عين وراحِ

    He came to us with two meaningfulness

    That intoxicated the beauty of eyes and comforted

  3. فكان للإثم أَقداحه

    وتفاح خديه فوز القداحِ

    So wrong had its cups

    And the apples of his cheeks outshone all cups

  4. فناديت لا أمرة في الهوى

    تطاع لغير أمير الملاحِ

    So I called, no woman in love is obeyed

    Except the one obedient to the Master Seafarer

  5. أأعزل من صبره يلتقي

    كميّا من الحسن شاكي السلاحِ

    Shall I dismiss one whose patience meets

    Loads of beauty, complaining of weapon?

  6. له طرة كظلام الدجى

    على غرة كضياء الصّباحِ

    He has a gaze like the darkness of night

    Upon a cheek like the light of dawn

  7. فؤادي من خوف هجرانه

    مريض الجنان مهيض الجناحِ

    My heart, fearing his abandonment

    Is sick in its branches, ruffled in its wings

  8. يساوره حرج في السوار

    ويقلقه قلق في الوشاحِ

    It is troubled by discomfort in the bracelet

    And restless with anxiety in the sash

  9. مغاني اللّوى قد لوت عهدنا

    وعهدك كلّ فتاة رداحِ

    The melodies of passion have broken our pact

    While your pact remains binding on each fair lady

  10. سحبن السحائب أذيالها

    ورحن بربعك مرضى الرياحِ

    The clouds have dragged their hems

    And wandered in your meadows, cure for the winds

  11. ومرت بتربك منهلة

    تباري ندى يد ترب السماحِ

    And passed by your soil, a spring

    Rivaling the softness of a generous hand's soil

  12. فتى الصاحب المانح الأعطيا

    ت ينهبها الناس نهب المباحِ

    You're the companion's master, the giver

    Whose gifts people seize like free offerings

  13. هو الصدر أصبح ذا راحة

    تمير وصدر أمين النواحي

    You're the breast that's become relieved

    Flowing, while the breast of the elegist laments

  14. يبشرنا بشره بالمنى

    ويقضي لآمله بالنجاحِ

    You bring us glad tidings of wishes

    And fulfill the hopes of the hopeful

  15. وتسخر آراؤه بالظبي

    وتهزأ أقلامه بالرماحِ

    Your opinions mock the gazelle

    And your pens make light of spears

  16. جواد إذا سيل معروفه

    أَتاك يخجل سيل البطاحِ

    A generous horse, when his kindness floods

    Comes to you, shamed by mountain floods

  17. الآن عريكة دهري نداه

    فأصحب من بعد طول الجماحِ

    Now my lifetime's barrenness wails

    So be my companion after prolonged estrangement

  18. وأحيا من البكر لكنه

    يلاقي الحروب بوجه وقاحِ

    And revive what was once fresh, though now

    It meets wars with brazen face

  19. توقل من مجده ذروة

    فشيدها بالندى والكفاحِ

    I aspired to the peak of his glory

    And built it with dew and struggle

  20. فما الروض باكره عارض

    من المزن منهمر ذو انفساحِ

    So the meadow, fresh in the morning

    Is no match for the torrential, lavish downpour

  21. بكى شجوَه فيه مستعبرا

    فأضحك نرجسه والاقاحِ

    His poetic laments weep therein openly

    Yet his narcissi and anemones smile

  22. بأَطيب من عرضه نفحة

    فلا زال ذا عرض مستباحِ

    With a scent more fragrant than his honor

    His honor remains freely offered

  23. أقول لسائق عيسى غدا

    طليح سرى منضيا للطلاحِ

    I say to the guide of Jesus tomorrow

    Make haste, travelling to meet the rising dawn

  24. أذلك ربع خدين الندى

    أبي الفضل لاح فثق بالفلاحِ

    Is that the meadow of cheeks with morning dew

    My Abu al-Fadl has shone, so trust in success

  25. فثم أخو كرم طرفه

    إلى المكرمات شديد الطماحِ

    For there lies the brother of bounty whose glance

    Yearns for generous deeds, intensely ambitious

  26. يحن إلى البذل كل الحنين

    ويرتاح للحمد أي إرتياحِ

    He inclines toward bestowal, all inclination

    And relaxes into praise, complete relaxation

  27. أيا ابن غيوث السدى والندى

    ويا ابن ليوث الوغى والكفاحِ

    O son of succor to the plighted and spurned

    O son of valor in calamity and struggle

  28. لقد كنت مقترحا منعما

    فجاء بك الدهر فوق اقتراحي

    You were a granter of gifts, a benefactor

    Yet fate made you exceed all I could propose

  29. لك الله كم لك من نعمة

    غنيت بها عن أكف الشجاحِ

    God! How many gifts are yours!

    You're enriched beyond cupped palms' capacities

  30. إذا أفسد الدهر لي حالة

    سعت بمواهبها في صلاحي

    When fate ruins my state for me

    Your gifts strive toward my wellbeing

  31. فهنيت عيدا معادا علي

    ك ما هزم الليل جيش الصباحِ

    You let me celebrate, time reset for me

    As the night defeated the army of dawn

  32. وعشت أخا نعمة ثبتة

    فما يثبت الدهر ما أنت ماحي

    And I lived, my firm blessing brother

    For fate makes firm only what you establish

  33. ولا زلت تجعل أبدان من

    يناوي معاليك بدن الأضاحي

    And you remain granting bodies to those

    Who would oppose your heights sacrificial bodies
