1. وغادة كالغصن المياس

    تبسم عن مثل حباب الكاسِ

    And Ghada is like a supple branch

    Smiling over the brim of a goblet

  2. مولعة بالصد والشّماسِ

    ترق خدا والفؤاد قاسي

    Passionate for blocking and guarding

    Her cheeks glow and her heart is stern

  3. ما لأساي غيرها من آسي

    قد شردتعن مقلتي نعاسي

    None can console me but her

    She has banished sleepiness from my eyelids

  4. وصيرت ثوب الضنى لباسي

    ووكلت قلبي بالوسواسِ

    And made the garb of sadness my attire

    And charged my heart with obsession

  5. لها قوام كقضيب آسى

    ولحظات جؤذر الكناسِ

    She has a figure like a rod of misery

    And glances that wound like an awl

  6. دارية الأردان والأنفاس

    لو أنها تنصف أو تواسي

    She is well-rounded of hips and breaths

    If only she would be fair or console

  7. قاست من اللوعة ما أقاسي

    بكت لشيب ضاحك في راسي

    She has suffered from yearning as I suffer

    Weeping for the grey hair laughing on my head

  8. كفي فقد كفيد الإفلاس

    عني بجود جل عن قياس

    Enough, for poverty has bound my palm

    Spare me, for God transcends all bounds

  9. محمد طود الحلوم الراسي

    فها أنا اليوم لشيبي ناسي

    Mohammed the towering palm tree

    Yet today for my grey hair I do not care

  10. محيي ربوع الكرم الأَدراسِ

    ذو راحة كالعارض الرجّاسِ

    Reviving the meadows of generous date palms

    At ease like the relaxed watchman

  11. وغرة غراء كالنبراسِ

    مشرقة في ظلم الأعباس

    With a bloom like the shining light

    Radiant in the darkness of frowns

  12. زاكي النجار طاهر الأغراس

    رحب الذراع محصد الأمراس

    Pure and virtuous in his deeds

    Broad of arm, harvesting the sickles

  13. راجيه لا يعرف شخص الياس

    وحاكم بالعدل والقسطاس

    Hopeful, knowing no despair

    And judging with justice and balance

  14. بناؤه والدهر على الأساس

    تخافه الأساد في الأخياس

    His building and the days on firm foundations

    Lions fear him in their lairs

  15. رب الجفان الغر والعساس

    مالئها مفرغ الأكياسِ

    Lord of the brave and valiant

    Filled with poured out bags of gold

  16. ذو منكب عار من الأدناس

    ومن ثياب الحمد حال كاسي

    With shoulders free of any dishonor

    And wearing the garb of praise

  17. أقلامه في ساحة القرطاس

    يجرين بالأنعام والأباسِ

    His pens in the field of parchment

    Flowing with favors and gifts

  18. آراؤه أهدي من الأقباس

    في ليل خطب مشكل الألباسِ

    His views are clearer than torches

    In nights of complex tribulations

  19. يا عضد الدين الشديد الباس

    لدى حروب صعبة المراس

    O pillar of faith, steadfast in crisis

    Against hard battles and fierce combat

  20. في كل يوم أيوم عماس

    أعيذ علياك برب الناس

    Each day a day of high honor

    I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind

  21. من كل وسواس لها خناس

    أطلقتني من ربقة الأفلاس

    From every whispering devil

    You released me from the shackles of destitution

  22. ومن لقاء كل فدم جاس

    فصاب مدح لحز بخاسِ

    And from meeting every lowly scoundrel

    So praise landed as fitting tribute

  23. هجوى له من نزه الجلاسى

    يا طود عز ليني العباس

    While dispraise from the eminent is despised

    O towering pillar of the Abbasids

  24. يرتد عنه الطرف وهو خاسي

    أيامها في الحسن والإيناسِ

    Let your glance fall away, unheeding

    Her days are beauty and joy

  25. عندك كالأعياد والأعراس

    يا ابن الملوك السادة الرّواسِ

    Near you like holidays and weddings

    O son of honored noble lords

  26. يا خير خرق منعم مواسي

    تزجي إليه العيسى بالأحلاسِ

    O best cloak, source of consolation

    You attract highborn ladies with trinkets

  27. خذها كنوار الثرى المغاس

    ورقة الشمالفي الأغلاسِ

    Take them like earth's luminous stars

    And the northern waft in the thickets

  28. أفصح من شعر أبي نواس

    وفارس النظم أبي فراسِ

    More eloquent than Abu Nuwas' verse

    And the eminent poet Abu Firas

  29. واسلم ودم وابق على الأحرامي

    للملكوالحاسد للأتعاسِ

    Greet in peace and remain in sanctity

    For the King who envies the miserable
