ومعنف لي إذ رآني مثريا

أدبا ومن كسب الثراء عديما

He rebuked me when he saw me living luxuriously,

Yet I have no wealth that I have earned.

يلحى علَى أن استميح وإن أرى

بضراعة في محفل موسوما

He urged me to be modest, yet if I see

A gathering where praise is expected,

صاحبته لاضعف عند مبخل

يوما ولا بعت الثناء لئيما

I will not refrain from praising a miser

One day, nor will I sell praise to the mean.

ومدحته والمدح يحسن بالذى

يعطي الألوف ويقطع الإقليما

But I praised him, for praise befits one

Who gives thousands and conquers kingdoms.
