راحت لسرحة نعمان وواديها
غر السحائب تغدوها غواديها
She went to the meadows of Nu'man and its valleys,
The clouds wandering above, shading its valleys.
من كل وطفاء يوزى البرق مزنتها
كأنما ثغر سعدى ضاحك فيها
From every gentle breeze, lightning adorns it,
As if the smile of Sa'di glistening through it.
أضحت محلتها بالشام نائية
يا بعدها منك والأشواق تدنيها
Its dwellings have become remote in Syria,
Oh how far you are from it, though yearning draws you near.
بيضاء عاندت فيها من يعاندها
عمدا وصافيت فيها من يصافيها
Defiantly white within it, against any who would oppose it,
Purposefully pure to any who would be pure towards it.
صدت فلا هي يوم البين ذاكرة
عهدي ولا أنا يوم البين ناسيها
It turned away, neither remembering the days of separation,
Nor I remembering the days we were parted.
تمشي فيثقلها رِيّ إذا خطَرَت
كأنها بانة طُلَّت حواشيها
She walks but the flowing of her garment weighs on her,
As if she were a gazelle adorned with necklaces.
كأن ريحانة في ثِني بردتها
بات النسيم قبيل الصبح يثنيها
As if a basil plant folded in the cold,
The breeze caressed her at dawn's first light.
زارت على غِرة الواشي مراقبة
تهدي الغرام لقلبي في تهاديها
She visited, spying from the hill's ridge,
Conveying the passion in my heart through her glances.
تسري اختلاسا وليلُ الشَّعر يسترها
عن العيون وصبح الثغر يبديها
She moves furtively while the night's poetry conceals her
From eyes, though the smile of dawn reveals her.
لا يعرف الشوق إلا من يكابده
ولا الصبابة إلا من يعانيها
None knows longing save those who endure it,
None knows youth save those who suffer it.
ولا السماحة إلا المستهام بها
خليفة الله مسديها ومسنيها
None knows generosity save those inspired by it -
God's Caliph who founded it and refined it.
رست على كبد الدنيا خلافتُه
فما تزول ولا زالت رواسيها
His caliphate settled on the bosom of the world,
Never moving, its foundations never shaken.
ما اختال مِذ نالها وهو المعدُّ لها
تيهاً ونالَته فاختالت به تيها
He attained it without pretension, for he was destined for it,
Lost, until finding it, and adorning himself through it.
سعى إلى الغاية القصوى فأدركها
لما تباعد عنها سعي ساعيها
He strove for the highest goal until reaching it,
When seeking it exceeded the efforts of its seeker.
مردد الجود ما اعتلت له منن
فينا ولا احتجبت عن عين راجيها
He showers generosity, however much grace he bestows on us,
Never veiling it from the eyes of those who seek it.
خِرق تدل عليه من سجيَّته
خلائقٌ مثل صفوِ الراح صافيها
Traits he has which show his nature -
Pure, like the wafting of gentle winds.
سهل الخليقة ميمون له شيم
ترى المعالي مثولا في معانيها
Gentle of manner, auspicious of conduct,
You see high ideals manifest in his character.
بذَّ الجيادَ إلى المعروفِ مبتدرا
سبقا وأقبل يحثو في نواصيها
He surges forth spontaneously toward benevolence,
Racing ahead, spurring on its forelocks.
له أحاديث جود لا ارتياب بها
إحسانه الغمر في الآفاق يرويها
His is speech of munificence, no doubt in it -
His benevolence inundating the horizons, watering them.
وهمّة كثهاب الرجم يركبها
إلى العدو فيبنضيها ويمضيها
He has determination like a hurling arrow -
He mounts it against the enemy, hurling and propelling it.
تموت آمال عافينا فينشرها
وينشر الدهر أحداثا فيطويها
It kills the hopes of those who oppose us, scattering them,
As fate scatters events, gathering them up.
من دوحةٍ بسقَت أغصانها وحلَت
عند القطافِ مَجانيها لجانيها
From a bouquet whose branches were watered and became lush
When plucked, freely plucked by the plucker.
يعدّ في الفخرِ للعباس أولها
مجدا وللمقتفي بالله ثانيها
He counts in pride al-'Abbas first among them,
Glory, and the follower of God comes second.
اعطو الوزارة عون الدين سائها
بالعدل منه فاعطى القوس ياريها
They gave governance to the aide Awn al-Din, so he
Ruled justly, and thus guided its bow rightly.
تغنيه آراؤه والحرب مظلمة ال
أرجاء ما ليس يغنيه عواليها
His views invigorate me, though war is dark,
Its expanses bring no aid but his lofty hills.
به جوائز عندي قد حكمت لها
مع الفصاحة أني لا أجازيها
For him, I have rewards which I have decreed -
Along with eloquence, though I cannot equal it.
سقيت آمالنا منن بعد ما ظمئت
ماء المكارم فاخضرت مراعيها
We quenched our hopes, after they thirsted,
With the water of bounty, so its pasture became green.
إذا تيممت أرضا أخصبت وربت
تلاعها الغبن واهتزت روابيها
If I survey a land, it becomes fertile and flourishing,
Its barrenness disappears, its poles shake.
وكيف لا والربيع الطلق يضحك في
ربوعها والندى ينحو نواحيها
How not, when radiant Spring smiles in its meadows,
And the dew tilts toward its sides?
فانهض فقد أذنت بالطوع راضية
لك البرية قاصيها ودانيها
So arise - I have consented willingly -
For you, the wilderness, its near and far parts.
باك المواهب نقدا لا مؤجلة
كفعل غيرك ينساها وينسيها
Pour out gifts in cash, not postponed,
Unlike others who forget and neglect them.
جد لي باجرد أو جرداء سابحة
تنصر الريح شوطا أن تجاريها
Grant me a swift camel filly challenging the winds,
That rivals them however much they blow.
إن لم أهدّ بها ركن العدوّ فلا
ملكت عند مثارِ النقعِ هاديها
If I do not hurl the foe's column with it,
Then I have no guide to lead it to pasture.
ليعلم الناس أنَي شاعر بطل
لا مثلَ من يتعاطى ذلك تمويها
Let people know I am a valiant poet,
Not like those who pretend to such arts.
واسمع بمطربة الألفاظ محكمةٍ
الحسنُ قائدُها والطبعُ هاديها
And hear an enchanting eloquence, precise,
Beauty its guide, nature its leader.
تروى فلا يسأم التكرار سامعها
ولا يملّ من الإِضجار راويها
It narrates but no listener grows weary of repetition,
Nor any reciter tire of chanting it.
ترفَّعت عن عطايا الباخلين فما
يزال يغصبها من ليس يرضيها
She spurned the gifts of the miserly, so he still
Forcibly seizes what she does not permit.
أغليتها بعد رخص فاعتلت وسمَت
قدراً ولا زلت معليها ومغليها
I made her precious after cheapness, so she became proud,
Maintaining her worth, though I made her yet more precious.
أقول من بعد ما أحببت دولتكم
أنافعي عند ليلى فرطُ حبيها
I say, after having loved your state:
My usefulness to Layla is the excess of my love for her.
