وَلَيل كَسا الآفاقُ ثَوبَ ظَلامِهِ
وَآلى يَميناً في الإِقامَةِ يَمكُثُ
A night clothed the horizons in the robe of its darkness,
and swore a solemn oath to remain there and linger.
ثَويَت وَقَلبي فيهِ لِلهَمِّ حَلقَةٌ
أَكابِدُهُ وَالخَوفُ بِالنَفسِ يَعبَثُ
I tarried, my heart within it a gathering place for sorrow;
I struggled through it while fear toyed with my soul.
أُصَبِّرُ روحي لا تُراعي واصبِري
سَيدركه نور الصَباح فَيحنَث
I schooled my spirit in patience: Take no fright; endure.
The light of morning will overtake it, and it will break its oath.
