A city like a blossoming flower
Scented with perfume in every drop
Its magical banks fluttering
The heart of the Nile beats in its chest
You'd think it a rhythmic song
Its beautiful melody over its river
Its obscure, unbound tunes
Echo back from its birds
Its radiant, wine-like sunset
Spilling the cup of light at its full moon
The laden branch leaning over it
And the grape cluster shading it
The idle moon hovering over it
Composing from time to time
A poem inspired by God
To delight the artist and poet
A city of magic, marvelous resting place
Captivating to the beholder’s eye
Where rooms of gold sleep
In blossoming, verdant gardens
Dawn illuminated it, and when night fell
It was lit up by brilliant souls
Beauty endowed it with its gifts
And love adorned it with its images
Oh, the sweet chatterer, who could love it?
Oh, that gazelle with the bracelet!
The laden branch leaning over it
And the grape cluster shading it
The idle moon hovering over it
Composing from time to time
A poem inspired by God
To delight the artist and poet
Damascus and Lebanon are intoxicated by it
And the fragrant passing cities
Its love-smitten boys surround it
With playful, carefree coquetry
Love's artist impressed himself on it
And adorned it with sparkling eyes
His lovelorn youth poured out
Onto its precious, free banks
Oh, that bliss - what is its business
Embracing paradise in its singing?
A city whose tune the musician struck
On the tinkling lyre's string
The fleeting, seizing vanish into it
Silver ingots from its secret
The healing balm flowed generously
With abundant grace from its rivers
The idle moon hovering over it
Composing from time to time
A poem inspired by God
To delight the artist and poet
