1. إِذا ما كُنتَ ذا فَضلٍ وَعِلمِ

    بِما اِختَلَفَ الأَوائِلُ وَالأَواخِر

    If you possess virtue and knowledge

    Of what the ancients and moderns disputed

  2. فَناظِر مَن تُناظِرُ في سُكونٍ

    حَليماً لا تَلِحُّ وَلا تُكابِر

    Then face whom you face calmly

    Neither insisting nor competing

  3. يُفيدُكَ ما اِستَفادَ بِلا اِمتِنانٍ

    مِنَ النُكَتِ اللَطيفَةِ وَالنَوادِر

    What profits you without obligation

    Of subtle points and rare tales

  4. وَإِيّاكَ اللَجوجَ وَمَن يُرائي

    بِأَنّي قَد غَلَبتُ وَمَن يُفاخِر

    Beware stubbornness and pretense

    Of I have won and who would boast

  5. فَإِنَّ الشَرَّ في جَنَباتِ هَذا

    يُمَنِّيَ بِالتَقاطُعِ وَالتَدابِر

    For evil lurks in the ribs of this

    Feigning accord and caution
