إنِّي صَحِبْتُ أناساً مَا لَهُمْ عَدَدُ

وَكُنْتُ أَحْسبُ أنِّي قَدْ مَلأَتُ يدِي

I have befriended countless people,

Thinking my hands were full.

لَمَّا بَلَوْتُ أخِلائي وَجَدْتُهُمُ

كالدَّهرِ في الغَدرِ لَم يُبقوا على أحدِ

When I tested my friends, I found them

Like time itself in their betrayal, leaving no one behind.

إن غِبتُ فَشرُّ الناسِ يَشتُمُني

وَإنْ مَرِضْتُ فَخَيْرُ النَّاسِ لَمْ يَعُدِ

If I'm absent, the worst people insult me,

And if I'm sick, even the best people don't visit.

وإن رأوني بخيرٍ ساءهُم فَرحَي

وإن رأوني بِشَرٍّ سَرَّهم نَكدي

If they see me prosper, it saddens them,

And if they see me suffer, it delights them.
