1. كَأَنَّ حِجاجَ مُقلَتِها قَليبٌ

    مِنَ السَقبَينِ يُخلِفُ مُستَقاها

    Her tear ducts are like a waterskin

    Whose outpourings follow fast upon each other,

  2. وَتَرقُبُهُ بعامِلَةٍ قَذُوفٍ

    سَرِيعٍ طَرفُها قَلِقٍ قَذاها

    And she checks its flow with eyelids

    Swift to act, their glances restless, darting.

  3. أَلا أَبلِغ بَني شَيبان عَني

    فَقَد حَلَبَت صُرامُ لَكُم صَراها

    O tribes of Shayban, I have a message:

    The swords you sharpened have stripped her bare.

  4. دَعاها صَوتُ قُرَّة مِن سُواجٍ

    فَجَنبَي طِخفَةٍ فَإِلى لِواها

    A voice called out from the litter’s drapery,

    And the camel-borne houdah veered towards it.
